This last financial year Change a Chapter has
continued to receive donations from
benevolent individuals and two separate trust
funds.
The trustees of the charity all work on a
voluntary basis. The charity continues to
receive these donations as the donors know
that every financial gift goes directly to
improving the welfare of the children who live
in great poverty.
Primary school support
The charity has continued to support the
education for all the children with a named| 3 ||||sponsor and the donations received have also
meant four other children have been
supported to attend primary school.
This financial year has involved intense
academic terms for the children as the children
continue to catch up on the 9 months of
education missed due to the closure of all the
schools in 2020 at the onset of the Covid 19
pandemic.
The academic year for 2021 started in the last
week of July 2021 and was completed in March
2022. The academic year for 2022, commenced
in April 2022 and will complete in December
2022. The Kenyan education academic year will
then recommence as it was before the
pandemic in January of each New Year.
The primary school children the charity
supports have been attending three different
schools. As of April 2022 the Change a Chapter
children attend two different primary schools.
We had to relocate eight students to a new
primary school in April 2022 as their former
school was closing.
Secondary school support
The academic terms for the secondary school
students have been amended so that they are
in line with the primary schools and to catch up
on the 9 months of missed education in 2020.
We have continued to support three children,
one boy and two girls who are now in their
final year of secondary school. They will sit the
national exams in December the academic level
being equivalent to A levels.
This financial year two girls have commenced
their first year at secondary school.
The financial support for the secondary school
children who are all at boarding school includes

Despite the challenges of the intense school
timetable due to the schools still catching up
on the 9 months of missed education in 2020,
we are pleased with the achievements of the
charity this financial year.
Primary school education
We have provided the school fees including
examination charges for all the children in
primary school with a dedicated sponsor and in
addition have been supporting four other
needy children so they could also attend
school. The children have been in three
different primary schools for the academic year
2021 which ended in March 2022 and currently
the children are now in twoprimaryschools.| 5 The children’s school fees also ensure that that the children receive two meals per day. For some of the children it may be the only food they receive in a day. The children have also been provided with new school uniforms and school shoes as well as sports kit and plimsols. Textbooks, exercise books and other stationary items including geometrical sets are purchased for the children depending on the necessary requirements of the child depending on which year they are in. Face masks are provided as they remain obligatory in schools. All the children have written thankyou letters to their sponsors and also made them Christmas cards. The Kenyan based Change a Chapter coordinator will then get these scanned and emailed across so they can be printed and sent to the child’s respective sponsor. All the children are very grateful that someone who has never met them is kind hearted and is willing to support them. Some of their English is not perfect but the children are learning and English is their third language, after Kiswahili and Giriama, however we the trustees are impressed that the children make the effort and really want to say thank you. ‘ _I take this opportunity to thank you for paying for paying for the school fees and buying me school shoes and uniform. I thank you for supporting me in my studies. I am working hard to achieve my dream and you have really made my education journey to be easy.’_ Christopher _‘I take this chance to say thank you for paying for me school fees, buying me school uniform and taking me to a good school. I am so happy for getting all the school needs you have been providing to me. Thank you so much. I love you.’_ Avril _‘ The reason of writing this letter, I want to say thank you for supporting me at school and you have stand for me for the burial of my mother. I was not happy but you have stayed and now I am happy because you are supporting me all the time.’_ Leah 6 Change a Chapter had been supporting a teacher from Watamu Academy Junior school to complete his legal teaching qualifications. We the trustees are delighted that finally he now has his certificates and documents and is now a member of the Kenyan Teachers Service Commission. He has been an advocate for the older primary school children when required and remains guardian to the one boy currently at secondary school we support. He is now a teacher at a school called Glory Academy. This will equip him with further experience and he is keen that it may be possible for Watamu Academy Junior school to reopen in 2023. The school where eight of our primary school children were attending since the schools reopened after the 9 months closure in 2020, has closed its doors since the end of the last term in March 2022. We were concerned where to secure a place for these children in school. The above teacher now working at Glory Academy spoke on our behalf to the headmaster and the Director of Glory Academy to see if the children may get a chance there. These children all had to sit an exam and be interviewed at the school and we the trustees and the Change a Chapter team in Kenya were delighted they all got places. They commenced their first term of the academic year 2022, at the end of April 2022. The children have all settled in very well and some of the children are being taught by the teacher Change a Chapter enabled to be a qualified teacher. Secondary School Education One of our sponsored girls at secondary school completed her Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Examinations in April 2022. She achieved a remarkable overall Grade B-. We are truly delighted in her performance. She has worked so hard to Change a Chapter in her life and she has succeeded and received this Grade despite her home being a mud house and all the education missed during the pandemic. She has now applied to universities and colleges and due to the Grade, she scored she will be able to apply for a government grant to pay her fees. 7 We now have three students who are in the final year at secondary boarding school. Some subjects they were struggling with and in the months holiday before they commenced their final year it was arranged for them to have extra tuition which they attended together for 5 weeks and they all benefitted from. This extra private tuition continued during their half term break. Like the primary students the secondary school students also write to their sponsors and Change a Chapter. _‘I hereby take this great opportunity to thank you for all the support you have granted me in my studies. Although education in Kenya was interfered with the covid pandemic but I thank God and am grateful joining form four. Thank you so much for providing for me all the school equipment. You have been my strong pillars of my dreams for your tireless effort towards me, I am grateful’_ . Juma One girl in August 2021 commenced secondary school. She did very well in her Kenya Certificate of Primary School exams and joined a girl’s boarding school in Watamu in August 2021. She has settled in well to her new school. _‘I am enjoying my education at Ngala girls and am working hard to achieve my goals of being a trained nurse. Thank you for making my education be possible. My thanks is to you for making me healthy. You have been there for me during my medical check-ups. May my Lord bless you with long life’._ Martha Change a Chapter Covid Management. We are happy to report that the adults in Kenya who support the children have now had three Covid vaccinations. The secondary school children have also had one or two vaccinations. The children of all ages are still required to wear face masks in school which we provide for them. 8 Medical All the girls at secondary school have had health issues this financial year. Two girls have had severe anaemia. One of them was diagnosed in the last financial year but she remained on medication to ensure she was well enough to sit her national exams. Another girl developed severe anaemia and had a number of investigations to find the cause. She remains on a high dose of medication and will be having regular blood tests. One child was diagnosed with a duodenal ulcer and had to have treatment for that and she remains on medication. The malnourished children have continued to receive regular medical reviews and the weight of these children is now increasing well. All the children have received deworming medication on a regular basis. As a result of the good medical care the children have received, they have been able to continue with their primary and secondary studies which otherwise would not have been possible especially for the two girls with very severe anaemia. Trustees oversight in Kenya during the financial year. The Kenyan based Change a Chapter coordinator and their deputy have been in regular communications regarding the children. The coordinator provides regular reports of expenditure and ensures that funds sent to Kenya have been used as per the trustee’s authorisation. One of the trustees has been to Kenya and met with all the children. The children were very happy. The children were seen individually and then all the children and the team in Kenya met with the children to play together and have snacks. What was touching to the trustee is that the children of all ages now refer to each other as their brother or sister and the older children look after the younger children. There has been a large increase in primary school costs this financial year as there have been four academic terms instead of three as the school academic calendar is still catching up on the nine months when there was no school for the children in 2020. In addition a large number of the primary school children have had to be moved to a different school which has higher costs. 2. There has been an increase in a number of secondary school costs, for example, text books and items required for personal hygiene. 3. Transport costs have increased as in the UK due to the rise in fuel costs. 4. Very little was required in terms of Covid costs this financial year. 5. Provision of food and water locally have reduced with the return of children to school where they are provided with at least two meals a day. 16
