  1. Providing and assisting in the provision of facilities for education at Watamu Academy Junior School, Timboni, Watamu.

  2. Providing sponsorship for children at primary and secondary schools.

Significant activities

During this last financial year Change a Chapter has received donations from kind hearted individuals and two trust funds. The charity has continued to receive these donations as the donors know the trustees all work on an entirely voluntary basis and that every financial gift goes directly to the point of need in improving the welfare of the children who live in great poverty. Primary School Educational support

Change a Chapter has continued to support the education for all children who had a named sponsor. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic the school calendar kept changing in Kenya. It had been announced there would be no schooling for all of 2020 but this then changed in October 2020 when the Minister of Education announced certain year groups would return to school. In the primary school children only two academic year groups out of eleven academic year groups were due to return to school. This involved five of our children with named sponsors. These were the children whose academic years meant they had national exams to sit. These were sat in April 2021.

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

All the other primary school academic years recommenced their second term of the academic year 2020 in January 2021. All of the academic year for 2020 was completed in July 2021.

Secondary School educational support

The pandemic also affected the academic school years of all our secondary school students. In October 2020 only three of our secondary school students returned back to their respective boarding school. This was because these students were all in their final year of secondary school. They sat their national exams in April 2021. Our other additional four secondary school students returned to their boarding schools in January 2021 and completed the academic year for 2020 in July 2021. The financial support for the secondary school children includes everything they need to be able to attend school. These costs include all fees for teaching, board and lodging, textbooks, uniforms and sports kit, travel costs to and from school as well as all they require for their personal ablutions. When the secondary school children were not at school some of the school’s sent homework via WhatsApp to the two Change a Chapter guardians. None of the children have a computer, tablet, phone or electricity. The guardian would then have to go to an internet café to get the children’s homework assignments printed for them. These children required extra textbooks to assist them.

Educational and Mentorship programme.

This programme was initiated at the end of July 2020 due to the children not being in school due to the pandemic. It continued to run from August 2020 until December 2020.

This enabled all the children who have a named sponsor through Change a Chapter to continue to receive education, tutoring, support and food which otherwise they would not have received. The children were split into three cohorts according to their ages and received education in a format that was not as per the national curriculum but kept them learning. This involved 4 teaching staff.

Medical expenses.

Change a Chapter has continued to pay for the medical expenses of the Change a Chapter children both at primary and secondary school. This is to ensure they have remained in the best state of health as possible to ensure they can continue with their studies. A number of our children have been quite seriously unwell the last financial year.

The trustees confirm that the main activities fulfil our objectives in advancing the education of the children in the coastal region of Kenya from Malindi in the North to Mombasa in the south.

The trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance issued for the Charity Commission on public benefit and have due regard for these in the charities’ activities.

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

During the financial year commencing 1[st] August 2020 and ending 31[st] July 2021 a total of £24,725 was raised and received by the charity from a variety of different sources. The expenditure for the financial year was £23,681 (see Receipts and Payment accounts for the year). Despite all the challenges imposed due to the ongoing world pandemic and the frequent changing of rules in Kenya regarding when schools would and would not be open and closing, we are pleased with the achievements of the charity for this financial year. Primary school education

Apart from two academic year groups which included 5 of the sponsored children all the other children remained out of formal school education as per the national curriculum until January 2021. Since then, all the children have returned to school and the children have completed the second and third terms of the academic year 2020. We have provided the primary school fees for the children with individual sponsors. Their school fees also ensure that the child receives two meals a day at school. This is frequently the only food they may receive in a day. The children have also received uniforms and shoes, face masks, (mandatory for all school children whatever their age), exercise books and other items of stationary required. The children have all kept in contact with their sponsors and written them letters and cards at Christmas and also at the end of the academic year. These have been scanned and emailed over from our Kenyan based coordinator and sent on to the respective sponsor with a photograph of the child. The children are very appreciative that someone who has never met them wants to help them. This helps the children feel valued. ‘I take this opportunity to thank you for all the things that you have provided for me. I thank you so much for continuing paying for me my school fees, buying for me school uniform and buying me food.’ In Kenya there is this Covid-19 pandemic but I thank God that I am okay. Talanta I would like to appreciate and give thanks to you for all you have been doing for me. One girl completed her Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education with a high score. Due to her high grade, she has been selected to commence attendance at a highly reputable girls boarding school for her secondary school education. This has been a great source of encouragement. ‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting me in my primary education. I really worked harder in my national examinations to achieve my goals with flying colours. I struggle with this pandemic it was so hard to do self-revision. I am about to join Form one in my secondary education. I am very glad to open a new chapter of my studies. I appreciate you a lot for making it possible for sure you are one in a hundred.’ Martha

Change a Chapter has continued to assist in the finances to enable a long service teacher from Watamu Academy Junior school to finally complete his legal teaching qualifications. His final training and sitting of exams were when Nairobi was on a strict curfew. Despite the adversities imposed including the fact he was mugged we the trustees were absolutely delighted that he passed with Distinction. Currently there are two different education curriculum’s running in Kenya. Some of our children are in the old system and some are in the new system. For two of our teacher’s, they required additional training so that they legally could teach the new primary school curriculum. As both these primary school teachers are such an asset Change a Chapter financed this for them. Secondary School Three more of our students sat their Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education exams in April 2021 and have now completed their secondary school education. This means that currently we have four students at secondary boarding school, three girls and one boy. Despite the fact they had 9 months away from formal teaching as per the national curriculum, they have adjusted well to their returning to boarding school and have completed their academic year for 2020 on 16[th] July 2021. They only had ten days out of school before returning to commence the academic year for 2021. The Minister of Education has compiled an intense academic programme to catch up on all the missed months of education in 2020 due to the pandemic and the aim is to restore the start of the academic school to January as of January 2023. This will of course be subject to the pandemic. The secondary school students also always write letters to their sponsors. ‘I take this opportunity to thank you for all your kindness and generosity in helping to make it possible for me to continue my education. Thank you for continue to make it possible for me to be at Ganze Girl’s secondary school. Doe to the Covid-19 pandemic there are some changes in school. Juma Change a Chapter Educational Programme Due to the schools being shut for so long a proposal had been put forward to the trustees to run a unique educational programme to engage all the sponsored children. We have two very large classrooms at Watamu Academy Junior school and the educational and mentoring

programme led by four adults was a great success. It ran until December 2020.The children could not look like they were at school and no teaching was done on the blackboard but the team developed a variety of different activities to keep the children engaged and learning. The children were given snack foods to eat that were easily purchasable.

During the first three months of the pandemic in the area where we work over 3000 post pubertal girls became pregnant. One of the additional reasons this education programme was initiated was to ensure that none of our girls became pregnant and that none of our boys got a girl pregnant. Thankfully they did not. The education sessions for the adolescents were very comprehensive and they learnt about a whole range of topics which they would never have learnt about in the national school curriculum.

Topics included: Communication skills; Making good choices and decisions; Heath including mental aspects of health and social aspects of health; Stress management; Sexually transmitted diseases; Dealing with peer pressure. None of these subjects are taught in the national school curriculum and as the children are orphan’s they do not have parents to guide and support them. It was wonderful that we could give them this extra education in Life skills.

The feedback from the adolescents from this was most encouraging and some of the children wrote to the teacher who primarily led these sessions thank you letters they were so appreciative.

‘ I take this opportunity to express my gratitude for what you have been teaching me in these sessions and I am grateful that I have learnt a lot through all the sessions. I have learnt how to solve different problems that I face in my life in different situations, how to make wise decisions, choosing friends wisely, having goals. All the sessions attended have been beneficial to me and I am grateful that now I am capable of solving any problem that I may come across.’ Lorna ‘The main purpose of writing this letter is to give thanks. Sincerely I’ve really benefitted from the advice and all the teachings you’ve been giving me together with my fellows. The younger children learnt bible stories and life lessons that could be learnt from these, for example the story of the Good Samaritan. They were given topics to write for essays, they had debates, they were given some maths work and also, they had physical education sessions. The children did not each attend every day as we had to comply with the Kenyan government Covid guidelines. Change a Chapter Covid Management The trustees continued fund raising for Covid supplies and the team working on the ground have continued to deliver food, soap, masks, sanitary pads and other items necessary to ensure the protection of the children during this ongoing time.

Medical

A number of our children have been unwell during the last financial year sadly some of them seriously unwell. They have required a lot of medical assistance. Four of the children have required fortified nutritional supplementation as they developed acute malnutrition and were dangerously underweight. One child has severe anaemia which has required investigations and ongoing treatment and one child has developed a concerning heart condition.

The teachers and administrator have all worked to a very high standard to ensure the safety of all the children during the pandemic but also ensuring they have received and been able to continue with education throughout this financial year.

We the trustees are really delighted that despite many obstacles with life being so much harder due to the ongoing pandemic all the children are still alive and all fit enough to continue with their education at primary and secondary levels.

Trustees oversight in Kenyan during the financial year.

Regrettably due to the ongoing travel restrictions no trustee has been able to go to Kenya.

However there has been almost daily contact with the Kenyan based coordinator who has provided regular reports of expenditure and sent across bank statements that show that the funds transferred to Kenya have been used as per the trustee’s delegation.

We the trustees have met with our aims and objective and despite the pandemic have had a milestone year of significant achievements.

Notes to the Financial Statement Year end 31[st] July 2021

We have benefitted with a higher exchange rate during most of this year. Average £1 -140Ksh.

This means that sterling provides greater benefit in Kenya for the children of Change a Chapter. Giving has not reduced during the pandemic of Covid19. However, it has meant some changes in the distribution of funds. For 7 months of this financial year the children have been out of the official schooling system. There has been a greater expenditure on food which is normally provided at school. Transport, administration, medical and Covid supplies all reflect this.

Overall expenditure has increased with the immediate needs on the ground due to the pandemic. We have experienced delays in sending money via our bank account with it taking 7-10 days for money to arrive in the bank account in Kenya. The banking charges are expensive. Therefore most of our money has been sent via World Remit. This is in comparison very inexpensive and the money arrives immediately. This has saved the charity a significant amount in banking charges and allows us to only send the money that is required at the time.
