Chairs report for Down Right Worthy
July 2022-June2023
AGM 5[th] July 2023
This is my fourth year as chair for the group. This last year has seen some big changes within the charity. We have had a change of name from Cumbria Down Syndrome Support Group to Down Right Worthy. The name change has been very much welcomed from our members and has given us (the committee) a fresh outlook on where we see the charity going in the future.
July
We started out our new year with a much loved trip to Lakeland Maze Farm Park, we had some very excited children running free in the fresh air, bouncing, swinging, jumping and even seeing the animals. The event was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed.
Our monthly bowling session was well attended as usual, there are some lovely friend groups being formed there.
Soft play was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
We had a session booked at total enigma for UV golf for our older members, everyone that attended had lots of fun.
August
We organised an event at Fusion the trampoline park, there was a very large turnout and everyone had a brilliant time.
The monthly bowling session was also well attended, this event is a firm favourite amongst some of our older members and their siblings.
We went to Beamish museum this month, there was only a few families that came but we it was such a brilliant day with so much to see and so much to do. It is definitely an event we will run again.
There was no soft play session this month due to the school holidays.
September
Bowling was a well attended event and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Soft play was well attended and enjoyed by all.
We received a total of £803 from donations given at the funeral of Graeme French, a much loved brother of one of our members. We send our condolences to the family and are really grateful for the donation.
We also received a donation from a company called much loved of £143, thank you very much.
October
Bowling was unfortunately cancelled this month.
We went to Halloween at Carlisle Castle this year instead of having a party. Everyone enjoyed getting together despite there being very little to do.
Soft play was cancelled due to lots of the kids being poorly.
November
As usual bowling was very popular this month with lots of attendees.
We were approached by a parent of one of our young adults asking us if we could arrange for a group of our older members to go to the panto at the Green Room Theatre, we were very happy to do this and also appreciated them asking us. They all went to watch 3 little pigs and they all had so much fun. There was lots of cheering and shouting during the show.
December
We had our annual Christmas party at the start of the month with an entertainer, buffet and a surprise visit from Santa. The party was absolutely fabulous and everyone had a great time with lots of singing and dancing. Every child that attended received a selection box and those with Down Syndrome received a gift voucher for Amazon.
We had our yearly pantomime visit this month too, it was Aladdin this year. It was such a good turnout and everyone had an amazing time. There was so much laughing, cheering and chanting from everyone.
We received a donation of £150 from D A Walker for which we are very grateful.
January
Soft play was very well attended, there is a lovely bond between all the little ones, its nice to see them growing alongside each other.
Bowling was busy this month with lots of the same faces all having fun in their own friend groups they have formed.
Andrew Robinson raised £100 for the group through his work place, thank you very much.
February
Soft play session was a busy one, all the children had a great time.
Bowling was also well attended, all had fun.
We had a planned trip to Walby Farm Park, this was a huge success. We had lots of families attend with a few families we haven’t seen for a long time and also a new family with a little baby. It was a fabulous day out and everyone was exhausted when it was time to go home. We even got to see twin lambs being born.
March
Baby group was well attended, we had the new baby that we met at Walby come to this session so it was lovely to see them in a more intimate setting.
The bowling session was a busy one, with everyone having lots of fun.
We booked the Alan Shearer Centre to celebrate World Down Syndrome day! We had a few families from the younger group attend, they all had a fabulous time and really enjoyed being free to roam around looking at all the lights and pressing the buttons for the sounds.
April
Bowling this month was a busy one, its always well attended especially by the older members of the group.
Soft play didn’t go ahead this month unfortunately.
We had a planned day out to Rookery Woods. It was lovely to see a couple of new families and some faces we haven’t seen for a little while. It was lovely to be out in the fresh air letting the children go exploring.
A large group of mums from the group organised an evening/night out together, it seems they all thoroughly enjoyed it and are already planning for the next one. This was a self funded event for the mums to let their hair down.
May
Soft play was well attended again, the friendships are really blossoming.
The bowling session was very busy and lots of fun was had by all.
We organised a cycle and picnic at Watchtree, it was lovely to see some of the members managing to ride different bikes. It was lovely weather and we all had a great day, finished off with ice creams all round.
June
Soft play and bowling both went ahead and we both well attended and enjoyed by all.
We had a donation of £100 from Wigton Road Methodist Church ‘wives group’. It is very appreciated.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank each member of the committee for their continued commitment and dedication to the charity by attending the regular meetings. I would like to thank Susan (treasurer) for keeping the accounts up to date. Thank you to Kellie (secretary) for getting the new website set up and running and for completing the administrative side of things. Thank you to Robyn for helping to keep all events running smoothly and always being on hand for help.
A special thank you to those that have helped fundraise this year. I am confident the charity will continue to flourish, providing valuable support for local families throughout Cumbria. I am looking forward to the upcoming year and all of the very exciting changes and events we have in the pipeline.
And last but not least thank you to all of our members for continuing to attend the events we organise. The group would not be what it is today if it wasn’t for the members supporting us.
