Chairs report for Cumbria Down Syndrome Support Group
July 2020-June2021 AGM 6[th] October 2021
Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic my second year as chair did not start off as we would have liked. We were still in a national lockdown for most of the year, however, there continued to be tight restrictions in place so many events sadly had to be cancelled or postponed until further notice.
Primark have continued to fundraise for us during the pandemic, as yet we do not have a final figure of the total amount raised.
In April we arranged for a few of us to go to Fitz Park in Keswick to meet with owners of the Keswick Boot Co (KBC) to do a cheque presentation. KBC raised £5440 in total for us, this is a huge amount and opens up many opportunities for us as a charity to provide support for our families. We are hoping to use the money to pay for a weekend trip for our families to a UK holiday park and also provide free Makaton training to our families that are interested.
In May, between lockdowns, we managed to arrange a trip to Lake District Wildlife Park. The day out was attended by a couple of families and lots of fun was had despite social distancing and restrictions.
September, we hosted a virtual pamper party with Tropic. The ambassador donated 100% of the profit to the charity. A total of £120.10 was raised.
Our regular activities such as bowling and soft play have yet to be resumed due to restrictions on numbers of people allowed in one place at any one time.
We had hoped to host a Halloween party, Christmas party, Christmas pantomime, Walby play session, Watchtree Wheelers sessions and lots more but this unfortunately couldn’t happen.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank each member of the committee for their continued commitment and dedication to the charity by attending the regular zoom meetings. Thanks to Susan (Treasurer) for keeping the accounts balanced. Wendy and Julie (joint Secretaries) for sharing the secretary role and completing the administrative side of
things. Robyn (vice chairperson) for organising events even if they couldn’t go ahead due to the pandemic.
A special thank you to those that have helped fundraise this year and also to the two businesses that chose us to extend the time being their charity of the year. I am confident the charity will continue to flourish, providing valuable support for local families throughout Cumbria. I am very excited to see what becomes of Cumbria Down Syndrome in the year ahead.
