Welcome to the IAVM Newsletter covering our 2023 events.
We had another busy twelve months with an online conference, masterclasses, various workshops, research papers, courses, free webinars and competitions. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all those who have supported our aims and who have contributed to the promulgation of Vedic Maths.
Interest in Vedic Maths is continually growing but there is much further to go before the brilliance of its approach to mathematics is appreciated and adopted in schools and colleges throughout the world.

Masterclass Series
James Glover ran a series of four masterclasses on March 3, 4, 11 and 18, primarily aimed at assisting the IVMO Centre Coordinators as well as students with solutions from the IVMO 2022 (International Vedic Maths Olympiad).
These were well received especially in respect of learning quick VM methods to solve quite difficult problems.
Kolam Workshop in India
On May 3rd, Gowri Ramachandran was invited to present a workshop on Kolam to a group of 50 students and adults at the School of Ancient Wisdom near Bengaluru. The students were gathered to undergo a rigorous residential camp on the study of Indian Classical Music for a period of one week.
In the workshop, Gowri discussed the history, anthropology and mathematical connections of Kolam in India and across the world. Hands on experience on different kinds of Kolam were also given. The group explored ways to present their learnings on the floor with coloured chalks. The inquisitive group of students asked many questions relating to the culture of Kolam and the connections with mathematics.
Vedic Mathematics in Tunisia
In collaboration with the IAVM, the Academy of Excellent Skills and the Djerba Project Association in Tunisia conducted the first Tunisian VM Olympiad for primary school children on May 14th.
Congratulations to the brilliant Zakria Bin Taziri, who won first prize in the Primary Olympiad, with a score of 48/50, and to Majd El Falah, who won 1st prize in the Preparatory Olympiad with a score of 33/50.
We look forward to arranging the competition again in 2024.
Introductory Talk on VM at Chinmaya Mission
On Saturday, May 27th, Gowri was invited by the Chinmaya Mission to give an introductory talk on Vedic Mathematics to a study group based in Bangalore, India.
The audience consisted mainly of adults and some students who were studying Vedanta and the Bhagavad Gita in Chinmaya Mission. Around 30 participants attended the webinar via zoom.
The talk included a brief history of ancient Indian Mathematics and the life history of Bharti Krishna Tirthaji Maharaj and then progressed on to demonstrate the Nikhilam sutra and its application to subtraction and base multiplication.

It was a pleasure sharing our knowledge with this enthusiastic group. More power to IAVM and Vedic Mathematics!
IAVM 9th International Vedic Maths Online Conference
Vedic Mathematics enthusiasts from India, UK, Philippines, Spain, USA, Japan, Abu Dhabi, Netherlands, and Italy participated at the 9th Online Vedic Mathematics Conference held on June 10th and 11th.
On day 1, Nilesh Oak gave a highly insightful keynote address encouraging creative application of the Vedic Maths sutras in interdisciplinary work. His inspiring talk is available on our YouTube channel here. This was followed by news of IAVM partnerships with Trigyn Technologies and CBIT in Hyderabad. We then heard about the various VM initiatives happening around the world given by Ike Prudente and Whilmar Villanuava in the Philippines, Kanmani Govindasamy in Japan and Sahar Ben Makhlouf in Tunisia. The next segment was the presentation of the following original research papers, which was then followed by a workshop by Chandrahas Halai (India).

Day 2 of the conference began with announcing the results of the Lilavati mathematical poetry competition with presentations of the winning entries.
The main activities of the day were Vedic Maths workshops in three break-out rooms for teachers, students (G3 - G7) and students (G8 and above). Each stream consisted of four live workshops conducted by our skilled tutors, Gowri Ramachandran, Muthuselvi Prabhu, Sripathi Sripada, Sreenivasa Ainapurapu, Ramya Nitharshini, Prajakti Gokhale and James Glover.
These workshops proved to be very popular and were well attended. All-in-all the conference was a success with participants showing gratitude for the shared company of like-minded people. You can find the detailed report of the conference on our website here.
VM Workshop at Chinmaya Vidyalaya, India
On 17th June, Gowri Ramachandran was invited to give an introductory workshop at Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Bengaluru, to a group of some 120 grade 8 - 10 students and 15 teachers. Needless to say, the session was met with much enthusiasm and excitement from both students and teachers. The feedback at the end of the session showed that, with a little openmindedness, the charm of Vedic Maths is all too obvious.
International Maths Poetry Competition ~~-~~ ‘Lilavati’
The Lilavati Poetry, Puzzle and Riddle competition took place during Spring and the winning results were announced at our online conference.
There were five levels of entry according to age: Under 8, 8 – 10, 11 – 13, 14 – 16 and an Open category. The judges agreed not to rank the Under 8s as, originally, this was not a published category. Nevertheless, certificates were awarded.

We also announced the publication of Lilavati Book-2022, a beautifully illustrated collection of mathematical winning entries from the previous year’s competition.
This is now available for purchase on our website.
A book containing an illustrated selection of this year’s entries will be available in due course.
Level 2 VM Course at Hindu College, India
Following India’s Ministry of Education policy for all educational institutions to include aspects of Indian Knowledge Systems, the IAVM has been involved in providing courses at several schools and colleges, most notably hosted at Hindu College, University of Delhi. The Autumn add-on course was for level 2 VM entitled, Ancient Indian Wisdom: Vedic Mathematics.
Students who successfully completed level 1 were invited to participate in the 25-hour course conducted by IAVM faculty from August 26th to October 5th. Students were assessed at the end of the course and awarded certificates.
Our sincere gratitude goes to the Principal - Prof.Anju Srivastava, Vice Principal - Prof.Reema Jain, course convener - Dr.Kavita Garg, course coordinator - Dr.Samridhi Mehta, Dr.Sunil Joshi, and the students for all their support and enthusiasm.
IAVM in South Africa
Introductory Workshops in Vedic Mathematics
From August 1st - 4th, Marianne Fletcher, who is one of the IAVM trustees and also a brilliant teacher, presented sixteen 1-hour introductory workshops in Vedic Maths at Kwalata Conference Centre near Pretoria. This was in conjunction with the annual Science Unlimited Expo. It was a huge event which was attended by about 2400 students from Grades 6 to 9. Marianne covered several basic techniques in VM together with applications to school algebra.
The event was sponsored by the Gauteng Provincial Education Department, as well as generously supported by Kwalata Lodge. Lunches were provided to all the students, many of who come from disadvantaged communities. It was a very special event which sparked interest and greater understanding amongst all who attended
Teacher Workshops
Swati Dave and Marianne Fletcher conducted a 2-day workshop entitled, “Unleash the Power of Number”, for teachers on September 26th and 27th , at the Kwalata Lodge. These were arranged by the Gauteng Department of Education: District-Tshwane North.
Teachers were enthused and excited by the “wow” moments that happen when learning Vedic Maths and were keen to use the methods in their classrooms.
Sandra de Bruyn, Deputy Chief Education Specialist: Policy and Planning (Acting), Gauteng Department of Education: District-Tshwane North, showed keen interest to continue the VM learning further.

Teacher Training at NWU
Following on from the Kwalata Lodge programme, Swati and Marianne conducted 3 days of Vedic Maths workshops at North West University (NWU), Vanderbijlpark Campus. Around 200 students of NWU University from Vanderbijlpark, Mahikeng, and Potchefstroom campus joined the workshops in person and online.
The sessions transformed student’s perception that Maths is a fearsome demon! They saw how easy and enjoyable the subject can be and ended up with great enthusiasm to use the techniques in classrooms. The conclusion was that we need to implement a strategic programme over the next two years and gauge the impact of VM as it is used in the classroom.
Our sincere gratitude goes to all the members of the Rotary Club of Vanderlbiljpark; Dr. Magda Kloppers - Deputy Director, Mrs. Erika Potgieter and Ms. Adri Olivier - Junior Lecturers from the School of Mathematics, Science and Technology Education, NWU, Vanderbijlpark Campus, and James Glover, Chairman IAVM, for all their valuable support with this initiative.
International Vedic Maths Olympiad (IVMO 2023)
The 3rd International Vedic Mathematics Olympiad was held on 25th November 2023, to test the use of VM techniques, speed of thought and mathematical acumen. As in previous years, there were six levels of entry. The offline version was managed through Centre Coordinators whilst the online mode was handled through our amazing tech team Raaga Value Add Technologies Ltd., in Chennai. We had over 5000 entries, which was a three-fold increase from the last year.
Competitors from about 10 countries participated, the vast majority of whom came from the Philippines, thanks to the amazing work of Ike Prudente who runs several VM centres there and has encouraged schools to take part.
All were awarded certificates, Gold, Silver, Bronze, Merit or Participation in the ratio, 5%, 10%, 15%, 30% and 40% . The top three in each category are highlighted on our Facebook page.
We are very grateful to the Centre Coordinators for organising the event in their particular schools and locations.

Book Releases
Inspirational Maths from India
Published at the end of the year by Motilal Banarsidass International, this book provides techniques which will enthuse any reader. Designed for teachers, it comprises an introduction to Vedic mathematics and covers twenty topics in its 145 pages. There are clear explanations of the methods, together with worked examples and short exercises.
The IAVM edition was published earlier and is available in pdf format from our online shop.
Utòpia
We are happy to announce the work of Laura Aimo entitled, Utòpia. Elementi per un’educazione estetica: nascita e matematica (Utòpia. Elements for an aesthetic education: birth and mathematics)
Laura Aimo is fellow and adjunct lecturer in Aesthetics at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan – Italy.
For her chapter on Vedic Mathematics in this book, as well as for her paper (see below), Laura worked closely with James Glover.
“Utòpia” is not “Utopìa.” An accent changes everything. The latter describes a place of ideal perfection - a word which has become synonymous with the impossible or unrealizable. The former word is the name of an imaginary girl in this book who finds her origins and roots in the life of someone who is the protagonist of stories considered utopean or “out of the ordinary”. Thanks to her, the reader will come into contact with aesthetic experiences. Following Utòpia’s journey, the reader explores aesthetic experiences that give shape and form to this world. Utòpia questions principles and practices of learning and expression, thereby rediscovering and nurturing an original unity. Aesthetic Appeal and Utility of Vedic Mathematics: An Introduction by Laura Aimo
Mathematics and aesthetics are closely intertwined. Not only can mathematical concepts, relationships and theorems be aesthetically pleasing, but harmony can often be found between their results and the patterns of the world around us. The beauty of mathematics, particularly in education, is rarely recognized.
Vedic Mathematics is an approach which can help with this recognition. It encapsulates the enjoyment and power of mathematical knowledge, not only in the sphere of thought processes, but also in its practical utility. It highlights and develops the aesthetic dimension of learning in a very immediate sense. Besides emphasizing the aesthetic value of Vedic Mathematics, this paper introduces the VM method - what it is and how it works. It also gives comparative examples of VM techniques and their efficacy.

Vedic Maths in Nepal
On December 18, 2023, ICCR in Nepal flagged off a 5-day ‘Fun & Learn’ Personality Development Camp for children. 60 students from different Government, CBSE and private schools participated in this camp in which they are taught Yoga, Brahmi Script, Traditional games, stories, and Vedic Mathematics.
Jayanta Acharya, Life Member of IAVM, conducted the Vedic Mathematics Workshops.
VM Winter Workshop for Charity in Europe
Ramyanitharshini Balaji conducted a series of eight winter VM workshops for Grades 3 - 4, and Grade 5 and above. Proceeds were donatated to the Sewa International charity for flood victims in India, for their Sponsor a Child project, and also to IAVM. Participants were from Ireland, Finland, Switzerland and Germany. Many thanks go to Ramya for her generous donations.

IAVM 10th International Online Conference
Our popular 2-day online annual conference will be held on June 8th and 9th. The first day comprises presentation of research papers, VM initiatives and discussionas. Day 2 is dedicated to a plethora of workshops for students and teachers. Details will be published soon.

IVMO 2024 ~~-~~ International Vedic Maths Olympiad
This year’s IVMO will be held on Saturday 30th November for all levels of entry. This will be the fourth such competition and we are expecting several thousand participants. Registration details will be available soon.
VM Courses in India
Following the Indian Government’s education policy for Indian Knowledge Systems to be included at all levels in schools, colleges and universities, IAVM has developed courses for Primary, Secondary and Higher education in Vedic Mathematics. VM provides an easy way for educational institutions to fulfill this requirement, not only because it demonstrates Indian heritage, but also because it is entirely up-to-date and useful for modern examinations. Nevertheless, teachers need to be trained and supplied with easy-to-use resources for the classroom. This is exactly what IAVM can provide. Our teacher training is conducted through progressive courses of live sessions, together with assessments and certifications.
The IAVM faculty are hugely experienced, some having taught Vedic Maths for 40 years. Through this vast experience we have developed coherent, integrated and pragmatic syllabuses for each level.

1Financial year end date is taken to be 15th January every year.
2 IAVM is considered to be a going concern and the books of accounts are maintained as such.
3 Revenue:
Revenue is recognised on cash basis. The amount stated as revenue is actually received and held at various locations.
4 Expenditure:
Expenditure is recognized on accrual basis. Expenditure yet to be paid on account of any transactions during the financial year shall be identified and recognised as expenditure
5 Assets and depreciation:
There are no assets held by the charity to date except the cash and bank balances by members at various locations
Hence no depreciation policy is placed into account.
The books and publications printed are taken into account as expenditure during the year they are printed.
A record of sales/donations on the publication and the closing balances is maintained at various locations.
The revenue on sale of books is however considered on cash basis in the period actually sold.
6 Memberships:
Registrations for Annual Memberships will end on the date one year from the date of registration or actual receipt of payment whichever is earlier.
Life memberships will be effective from the actual date of payment of fees
A separate restricted fund is maintained for the life membership fees. The utilization of this fund will be decided by the trustees in a separate trustees meeting.

7 Registrations for conferences:
Revenue generated from registrations of conferences is purposed to be used for payments for services rendered by moderators/ faculty.
Excess revenue if any from the same is to be kept in the country of the conference for application of funds for future conferences in that country.
If for any reason the same cannot be held in the country of the conference, the excess is transferred to UK Lloyds A/c using acceptable fund transfer methods.
8 UAE National Vedic Maths Olympiad (UAE VMO)
A Memorandum of understanding was drawn upon with Vision Kids Training Center (Dubai) to conduct a National Vedic Maths Olympiad in UAE during the year 2023. An amount of USD 500 was received by IAVM for conducting the same. Due to unforeseen circumstances by Vision Kids, the Olympiad was cancelled. As a goodwill gesture to the hosting institute, IAVM has given a credit of USD 350 that can be utilized within a period of two year by Vision Kids. The closing balance of the credit unutilized is taken as current liabilities.
9 Professional Fees Payable:
Professional fees payable to key resource persons with respect to all the revenue generated projects undertaken during the year and the previous year has been identified by the Board and approved in the finance committee meeting held during the year.
The fees thus recognized will be paid during the first quarter of the financial year 2023.
10 Reporting Currency:
The consolidated statement of accounts are made in the reporting currency i.e., GBP. The opening balances are taken at the exchange rate as at 15th January 2023, Transactions during the year are considered at the closing exchange rate as at 15th January 2024. The closing balances have been arrived accordingly with this adjustment. The cash flow statement and the statement of cash position for the year ended 15th January 2024, however, is shown at the currencies held at various locations.
