## **Highlights and Projects of 2022**

## **Kolam** ~~**-**~~ **A Ritualistic Mathematical Art Form**

Over a weekend last January we ran four hands-on workshops on Kolam.

Throughout centuries, Tamil women have practised this ritualistic art form involving patterns drawn on thresholds of homes.

The patterns express mathematical concepts such as skip counting, number shapes and symmetry.

Participants were able to explore the overlaps between culture, art and mathematics. They were also invited to practise making simple Pulli, Sikku, Padi and Mandala Kolams.

**Lilavati Competition**

The 2nd Lilavati competition was held in February for which contestents submitted poems, rhymes and riddles involving Maths. There were nearly 60 entries and the panel of judges chose winners on the strength of poeticism, creativity, mathematics and presentation.

The winners for each category are shown below.

## **8th Online International Vedic Maths Conference**

On March 12 and 13, IAVM hosted the 2-day online event which featured distinguished Vedic Mathematics teachers/trainers presenting their initiatives, and scholars sharing their research work. On day 2 the IAVM faculty and other VM Trainers offered free workshops for students and teachers on innovative approaches to learning and teaching mathematics.

We heard about initiatives by Jyoti Pandya and Anand Prabha in India, Hassan Oleik in Lebanon, Thair Raid in Iraq and Ike Prudente in the Philippines, all of whom are engaged in teaching VM and expanding the awareness of Vedic Maths in their countries.

Participants at the conference expressed their delight and gratitude for the enthrawling workshops. You can read the detailed report of the conference here. To watch the workshop videos click here.

## **Knowledge Series 2**

Knowledge Series is an initiative by IAVM to host free webinars on mathematical understanding, both ancient and modern, which relate to Vedic mathematics or to the development of mathematics in India and diverse cultures. We continued from the previous year with four webinars given by esteemed guest speakers.

_Major Landmarks in the Kerala Mathematics Tradition_

Dr. V. Madhukar Mallaya

_Vedic Mathematics for Asthankolakalam Aesthetic Education An Ancient Mathematical Treatise in Tamil_ Laura Aimo Dr. Smt. Sita Sundar Ram

_Contribution of Ancient Indian Mathematics to Algebra_ Ravi Asrani

Video recordings of each webinar are available on our YouTube channel here.

## **IAVM International Symposium on VM in Digital Technologies**

On April 29 - 30 we conducted a weekend online symposium for MIT World Peace University, in Pune India, attended by many students as well as faculty. The workshops focussed on VM algorithms that can be used in computer programming.

From the point of view of the presenters, as well as from feedback given by the students and the faculty, the symposium was a great success.

Our sincere gratitude to Prof. Dr Milind Pande, Pro-Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Dr Shubhalaxmi Joshi, Associate Dean, Faculty of Science, the organizing committee, the faculty, and the students of MITWPU for all their support and encouragement.

**5th International Vedic Maths Conference, Kerala**

After a gap of three years due to the pandemic situation all over the world, the much awaited 5th International Vedic mathematics Conference was held at Sree Sankara College, Kalady, Kerala, from 11th - 13th August 2022. The event was sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Education Renaissance Trust, UK, which supports schools and teachers who put spiritual values at the heart of education. We were privileged to be hosted by the college which is located close to the birthplace of Adi Shankara. The faculty and undergraduate students at the college were incredibly supportive and welcoming and the conference certainly could not have run smoothly without their unstinting work. Our heartfelt thanks go out to them.

Research papers from around the world were of exceptional quality. Subjects ranged from advancements and new discoveries in the applications of Vedic maths techniques through to revelations concerning the brilliant classical astronomers and mathematicians of India in relation to trigonometry, calculus and encoding. In due course, research papers will be published in the conference proceedings and also made available on the IAVM website.

## **International Vedic Maths Olympiad (IVMO 2022)**

The 2nd International Vedic Mathematics Olympiad was held on 26th November 2022, to test use of VM techniques, speed of thought and mathematical acumen. There were six levels of entry, Primary A, Primary B, Junior, Intermediate, Senior and Open. The competition was made available both online and offline and managed through Centre Coordinators. We had over 1800 entries, which was a three-fold increase from the first year.. Competitors came from ten countries. The vast majority of entries came from the Philippines, thanks to the amazing work of Ike Prudente who runs several VM centres there and has encouraged schools to take part.

Participants were awarded certificates, gold, silver and bronze for the top 10%, next 20% and next 30%. The top three in each category will soon be highlighted on our website and Facebook page.

The highest achievers in each category are shown below.

## **IAVM Invited on All India Radio**

Swati Dave, CEO of IAVM, was invited to discuss the merits of Vedic Maths live on All India Radio. This was a follow up conversation after Narendra Modiji’s segment on VM in ‘Mann Ki Baat’. This was in relation to the Government of India’s new education policy to include aspects of Indian heritage within schools and colleges.

You can see the interview after 29 minutes on this link.

## **Partnerships**

2022 was a year of increasing partnerships. IAVM signed MOU’s with JKMS Foundation, Hindu College - Delhi, CCSU - Meerut, VM Tunisia and ICAD - Lebanon. These institutes have realised the need for close linkage with IAVM to share a common interest in the dissemination of Vedic Mathematics.

## **Hindu College Course**

Ancient Indian Wisdom: Vedic Mathematics (Level 1), Add-on Course was hosted by Hindu College, University of Delhi in collaboration with IAVM from October 1 to November 13, 2022.

30 students of Delhi University took this 30-hour course conducted by IAVM faculty, and were assessed and awarded certificates at the end.

Our sincere gratitude to the Principal, Prof. Anju Srivastava, Vice-Principal Prof. Reena Jain, Course Convenor Dr. Kanta Garg, Course Coordinator Dr. Samridhi Mehta, Dr. Sunil Joshi, and the students for all their support and encouragement.

## **Vedic Maths in Lebanon**

Our partnership with Lebanon continues with our Master Training program, Teacher certifications, and provision of teacher and student resources. We completed the Level 2 of the Master Trainer workshops in December 2022. Students have started to learn VM approach in their regular math classes at school

## **Certification**

IAVM launched the initiative to award three levels of certification (Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced), each divided into three further levels of Novice, Proficiency and Advanced. Certification can be accomplished by successfully completing the IAVM assessments. The topics under each level are applicable to maths syllabus of Grades 3 - 12.

Nearly 160 students/teachers from Philippines are now certified at different levels of Foundation.

We look forward to expand this offering in a more structured manner and also partner with schools and colleges to encourage the students to take the assessments.
