Highlights and Projects of 2021
Expanded Core Team
In spite of the global pandemic, this past year the IAVM has been involved in a number of activities, both regular and new, aimed at promoting and disseminating Vedic Maths. In fact, we have been so busy with a number of new projects that we have had to expand our core team and invite three new directors onto the Board of Management, namely, Ramya Balaji, Prajakti Gokhale and Raghavendra Prasad.
Kalkeri Sangeet Vidyalaya, India, May 2021
IAVM conducted an introductory Vedic Mathematics Teacher Training programme for the teachers of Kalkeri Sangeet Vidyalaya, India. This training program was conducted via live online sessions of 2 hour/ day over a duration of 8 days. From the point of view of the presenters, as well as from feedback given by the KSV teachers, the programme was a great success.
Gratitude goes to Agathe, Adam, and Sudharm for their commitment to the professional development of teachers, as well Rajeshwari Godbole who introduced IAVM to KSV.
Nolali Education Centre ~~–~~ South Africa 2021
This report from Debby Potgieter of NEC says it all:
“We are really excited about the assistance the international Vedic Math team is offering our project.
Our relationship began by chance when we met Marianne Fletcher over the December holidays here in the Transkei. Marianne explained the concept of Vedic Maths, a technique which teaches mathematics using sutras which can be applied to maths problems, making it simpler to grasp. Students in our rural village miss the fundamentals such as the value of numbers as well as they don’t know their times tables and therefore Maths becomes a daunting challenge from a young age for many. We were keen to put Marianne’s ideas into action and she was keen to support our project. A couple of zoom meetings later, we met Marianne’s
international colleagues who were all keen to support us and our new journey towards making Maths more comprehensible for these children has begun.
The international team have now designed worksheets, created video tutorials and tailor-made activities for us to implement at our education centre after school and we are thrilled with their input. We are fortunate to have Justin, our Maths volunteer, to lead the lessons, although today, the class was so big it was hands on for everyone.”
We have an exciting journey ahead embracing Maths, Maths and more Maths. Thank you, Marianne, Swati and your team.
We hope to continue the programme this year.
Online Conference June 2021
Due to the postponement of the in-person conference usually held in August we moved our annual online conference from March to June. The conference turned out to be a delightful event with a broad variety of presentations. There were presentations showing applications of the VM sutras, innovative approaches and reports on a number of projects mostly connected with teaching VM in difficult situations and online. For the first time we introduced a new segment of free workshops for teachers and students on Day 2.
For a detailed report and the videos of presentations and workshops please check the Past Events tab on our website.

Lilavati Competition June 2021
Also at this conference, Gowri Ramachandran directed a new initiative called Lilavati. This was a Maths poetry and puzzle competition for different age-groups. The poems were received and judged beforehand, and the winners were announced at the conference and invited to read out their entries. This turned out to be very popular and so we will run it again at the 2022 online conference.

Knowledge Series 1 2021
In 2021 we reinvented our free webinar as “Knowledge Series” to feature interesting talks and presentations on mathematical understanding from ancient India and mathematical practices in diverse cultures. We invited five scholars to share their knowledge, and were extremely pleased to see that all the talks were well attended You can watch the video recordings on our YouTube Channel . Knowledge Series 2 begins next month so keep a look out on our Upcoming Events page.
International Vedic Maths Olympiad (IVMO)
The 1st International Vedic Mathematics Olympiad was held on 11th September 2021, to test use of VM techniques, speed of thought and mathematical acumen. There were five levels of entry, Primary, Junior, Intermediate, Senior and Open. Originally planned for an in-person event run through Regional Coordinators (RCs) we ended up running most of it online. The RCs were extremely helpful in facilitating this. There were over 600 entries from nine countries and high scorers received gold, silver, or bronze certificates. The event was very successful, and we plan to run it each year in September. You will find the detailed report with the winner list and the papers on our website.
