How tha Charity is constituted:
Membership of the Charity is open to
everyone who can support the Charity and
there are currently 10 members.
Trustee selection Method:
Trustees are appointed or reappointed
annually at the General Meeting usually
held in May following the appointment of the
Mayor for the ensuing Mayoral Year.
All trustees give their time voluntary and re￿1ve no remuneration or other benefits.
Risk:
The risk that the charity is exposed to is
reviewed annually by the trustees and due to
its operating model, the risk is deemed to be
low and this is reflected in the reserve policy.
Objectives and Activities
Summary of the objectives of the charity set out in its governing document:
To further such exclusively charitable purposes, according to the laws of England
and Wales, as the trustees determine by the provision of grants.
Grant Making Policy:
The policy on grant making is that the incoming Mayor during their year as Deputy
Mayor will select an organisation or organisations which they would like the charity to
support during their Mayoral Year. they put this to the trustees who consider the
request and make the decision to ac￿pt or reject the request. The organisation
selected to be supported by the charity must benefit the residents of the borough.
The charity prefers that the selected organisation uses the grant for some capital
purpose, to give some longevity from the grant. but the charity does not rule out the
grant being used for some revenue purpose. The selected organisation will discuss
and agree with the charity how the grant will be used.
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to
these objectives:
During this year, 2023 to 2024, the Mayor was Councillor Kevin Anderson, The
Mayor of Wigan's Charity Appeal was selected two charities within the Borough to
supported:

MamLeigh: This is a community organisation supporting all men, regardless of their
background. Founded in 2022, it is supported by a board. steering group and team of
dedicated volunteers. Statistically, men are less likely to access local peer-to-peer
support than their female counterparts. But at the same time they are much more
likely to suffer from problems associated with mental health. Providing a range of
support services, ManLeigh oversee support groups and drop-in style sessions,
providing a safe space for men to connect and build support structures.
Samaritsns Wigan: The Wigan Borough branch of the Samaritans has been
working to provide support to the local community since 1972. The organisation
provides confidential, non-judgemental support 24 hours a day for people who are
experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which could lead to
suicide. Samaritans, volunteers run more than 200 local branches across the UK and
Ireland and help to deliver 24-hour emotional support servI￿s. Local branches
recruit new volunteers throughout the year and anyone who is considering helping
out is encouraged to get in touch with their local branch.
Achievements and Performance
We held the annual 'The Mayor of Wigan Charity Ball, again. This is the biggest
event that the Charity stages and this year it was held at the DW Stadium, Wigan.
Yet again it was almost a sell-out. As well as being well attended everyone enjoyed
the food, drink, DJ and local female vocalist Olivia Garcia. It was also attended by
many of the Civic Heads from the Greater Manchester conurbation and from
St Helens, the Deputy Lieutenant Melanie Bryan OBE was also present at the Ball,
along with the Scarlet Guards.
We had another very enjoyable visit to the Wigan Brew House and people enjoyed
guided tour of the brewery and picked up some knowledge about the brews on tap,
along with some light refreshments and good conversation with friends; plus, the
mandatory raffle.
The Prayer Breakfast was held again, with speaker, prayers and breakfast.
Thanks to the help and support of the staff and volunteers at Haigh Woodland Park
we had a very enjoyable walk around the estate and surrounding area, raising
money for the charity. It was not a sponsored walk but there was a charge to be a
participant in the walk. The walk ended in the food court at Haigh Woodland Park
and most of the walkers enjoyed a drink of one kind or other and some food. This is
turning into another popular annual event.
Another annual event was the 'Wigan Cruse, with a night cruising up and down the
Leeds Liverpool canal from Wigan Pier. Thanks to the Kittywake Canal Cruises
company. This was complete with .
. more food, drink, raffle, quiz and good
company - a good night was had by all.
We also had the grant and cheque presentations to Daffodil's Dream, for
£26,014.75. Daffodil's Dreams being the chosen organisations to support during
Councillor Marie Morgan's year in office

The charity could not raise the amount of money it does each year without the great
support it re￿iVed from individuals and organisations who make donations to The
Mayor of Wigan's Charity Appeal or organise fund raising events on its behalf. Nor
without the support of those people who buy tickets for fund raising events, like
charity ball, and support them by turning up.
The Charty Trustees are also grateful to Charity Committee and friends, a dedicated
group of volunteers who support the Mayor and Trustees organise and deliver
events.
The Mayor and Charity Trustees would like to say a very big and special thank you
to all who have supported the charity's year 2023-24.
