## **Objectives of the Charity**
Yeadon Sailing Club (YSC) was established in 1928 and sails on Yeadon Tarn which is approximately 20 acres in size and has a maximum depth of about 6 feet. YSC has a long tradition of providing excellent racing, training and social sailing opportunities to all members of the community from the Yorkshire region. YSC provides individuals of all levels with an opportunity to push themselves and take on a new challenge.
The club maintains a clubhouse, dinghy park and a fleet of club boats for the purposes of providing sailing opportunities for its membership. Encouragement and facilities are made available to attract all those who want to experience sailing. Membership is open to all and visitors are welcome.
## The objects of Yeadon Sailing Club are
(1) To promote community participation in healthy recreation by providing facilities to participate in water-based amateur sport; and
(2) To advance education for the public benefit in the subject of water-based sports.
## **Public Benefit Statement**
In setting our objectives and planning our activities, the Trustees and Committee have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.

## **Financial Review**
## **YSC Financial report for 2025**
We started the year with £6,000 in current account. We then received £2,000 from Sunsail. Income from membership was only £400 more than 2024, which was disappointing. We spent £450 on duck food so profit from that was £1,350.
Boat maintenance cost £600 more than 2024. Six boats have been purchased at a cost of £3,000.
We have had to pay 2026 insurance in advance in order to save £400, so £6,000 was taken from our Skipton Building Society account. Hopefully this will be repaid monthly so that we have the funds to pay for 2027 insurance.
This has left us with a deficit of £7,300 and final bank balance of £2,550. Our Skipton Building Society account balance £18,630.

## **Reserves policy**
It is the clubs’ policy to maintain a balance in the region of £15,000 which equates to approximately 9 months running costs.
## **Risk and Internal Control**
The Club has in place systems of internal controls that are designed to provide reasonable assurance against material mismanagement or loss. These include financial controls and comprehensive insurance policies are in place to ensure that insurable risks are covered.
## **Plans for future years**
To continue to run the Club effectively we are in need a broad range of volunteers . There is a small group of active committee members who continue to run the Club.
We have piloted our new membership structure to attract new people into sailing.
The Club is still renegotiating the lease and licence with Leeds City Council. We continue to run different types of sailing activities including a number of one day trophy events, family racing days and beginners racing to encourage participation.
## **Structure, governance and management**
The charity is governed by the constitution and was recognised by the Charity Commission on 14[th] September 2016. The club is affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association and all activities organised by the club take place under the jurisdiction of the national body.
The Trustees of Yeadon Sailing Club, acting as a Board, carry the responsibility of complying with the requirements of the Constitution.
Other key documents include
Terms of Delegation - the trustees have delegated management responsibilities to the club’s committee.
Operating Rules - laid down by the Trustees and Committee, by authority of the Constitution, and can be altered from time to time at its discretion.

## _**Respective responsibilities of the trustees and the examiner.**_
_The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 (2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed._
_It is my responsibility to examine the account under section 145 of the 2011 Act, follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act and state whether particular matters have come to my attention._
## _Basis of independent examiner’s statement_
_My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts,and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below._

## **1. Accounting policies**
## **Basis of accounting**
The trustees have taken advantage of section 133 of the Charities Act 2011 and have prepared the accounts on a receipts and payments basis.
No changes have been made to the accounts for previous years.
## **Taxation**
As a registered charity the organisation benefits from rates relief and is generally exempt from income tax and capital gains tax but not from VAT. Irrecoverable VAT is included in the cost of those items to which it relates.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity.
The Building Fund is money raised to be used for the improvement of the Clubhouse. This money has been raised through a number of fundraising initiatives as well as through donations from individuals and groups.
Restricted funds are nominated when money is given from a grant or donation for a specific purpose.
## **Officer/Committee Member Expenses**
The club officers, committee members and trustees work entirely on a voluntary basis and no trustee, officer or committee member received any expenses during this year.

(NB. Figures taken from the attendance book. As there hasn’t been anyone overseeing the attendance book the numbers above cannot be regarded as being completely correct. Especially as members who attend Tuesday nights are expected to register their attendance. However, it gives an overall picture of training activity at the club on Tuesday nights for the past four years.)
Tuesday evenings at the club have continued to grow into one of the most vibrant and welcoming parts of our weekly programme. The combination of relaxed social sailing, structured coaching, and the now traditional offering of **excellent, great value galley food** —for which we owe a big thank you to **Glenis** —has created a brilliant atmosphere for both new and returning sailors of all ages.
## **Training Structure and Organisation**
This season we introduced a major improvement to how we plan and track training: **the large whiteboard of sailing skills** , where each adult sailor’s progress is recorded. This simple addition transformed our ability to plan sessions, match sailors to suitable boats, and ensure everyone received the right level of challenge.
A huge thank you goes to **John Ingham** and **Paul Gommersall** , who put in an exceptional amount of work each week allocating trainees to instructors and boats. Their organisation meant sessions ran smoothly, safely, and with a clear sense of progression.
We also benefited enormously from the support of **AP from LSAC** , who volunteered regularly and generously loaned additional boats when needed.
## **Progression Through the Fleet**
Adults began the season sailing **Wayfarers borrowed from LSAC** , alongside our own **Wanderer** . These stable, forgiving boats provided the perfect platform for early confidence-building. As skills developed, many sailors moved into **buddy sailing** with experienced club members in **Herons** , before progressing to sailing **Lasers, Picos, and Herons independently** . This steady pathway allowed sailors to build competence at their own pace while still feeling supported.
## **Junior training**
Over the last year at Yeadon Sailing Club the juniors have had their Tuesday night sailing sessions from April into the summer holidays and a few even came up over weekends to do racing. Some even went as far as to travel to another club to try out their racing.

On Tuesday nights the juniors have practiced their sailing (and capsizing) skills on the water. However, they will have a briefing beforehand where they talk about what the weather and wind is like, what boats they are going on and what they are going to practice. This is usually done whilst they are eating their tea purchased from the galley. As well as this they also rig their boats, working together to help all the kids get their boats and themselves ready and equipped for the water. After their sailing which usually includes games or races, they put their boats away before going home.
One of our juniors Alice has been as far to take their sailing skills further. They went to Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club up at Grimwith Reservoir where she participated in their summer holiday course and gained her RYA stage 3 award.
With the visit of the North East Junior Travellers holding a September race at Yeadon there was a chance to try out skills with visiting junior racers. Although only 2 of our juniors took part it was a great learning experience.
Throughout the year the juniors have done a lot of hard work and 3 juniors have received awards for the best overall in training, the most enthusiastic, the most improved - Alice Saxton, Dave Heywood, and Mia Moyles.
## **Expanding the Training Fleet**
Towards the end of the season, we made a significant investment in our training resources:
· **1 Laser Bahia** added to the adult training fleet
· **5 RS Qubas** , suitable for both adult and junior training
These additions will give us far more flexibility in matching sailors to the right boat and will help us continue to grow the programme.
Of course, keeping the existing fleet operational is already a neverending task. With **six new boats** now added to the mix, any extra hands would be hugely appreciated. This would be a great opportunity to learn about maintaining a boat before buying your own!
## **Summary**
It has been a season of real progress: improved organisation, a clearer training pathway, new boats, and a strong sense of community on Tuesday nights. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers, the generosity of LSAC, and the enthusiasm of every sailor who turned up ready to learn.
## **Sailing Report – Jon Wheble**
Another year of varied sailing with the weather having a regular impact, but there has been good participation in racing and other sailing activities - Particularly from August onwards where more new members from Tuesday night sessions started sailing at the weekends. This was very good to see, and the success they have had should act as an encouragement to all those going through training and thinking about what comes next.
Race duties have yet again been challenging but, leaving race duties as requiring people to actively volunteer still seems to be the most acceptable option. There wasn't always an OOD available (and rarely an AOOD) so sometimes Pursuit racing was the order of the day but, because of the wide range of Handicaps, this isn't the best for all classes (and can be complicated to get the timings right). We would ask again that everyone participates actively with the OOD duties, even if you don't sail much (or only participate on training evenings for instance). We can train anyone to do a duty, mostly by them helping as an AOOD, which is actually quite good fun

and a great introduction to how races work - you don't need any experience to volunteer as an AOOD.
We’ve tried running some special training days and other days for trainees to progress in their sailing or move to racing, but their popularity and usefulness is not clear so we may try other options this year. Social sailing is available during racing and this has been used a little, but mostly people have just joined in with the racing with quite a lot of success. If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts on what else we could try, just let us know – we’re always looking for ways of increasing sailing involvement and engagement.
Open class races have reduced again this year, and we now only have the Solo/Streaker and National 12 opens running. There are not strong class involvement at YSC so there isn’t a big driver for these, but it is the only time we actively engage with people from other clubs so they do have benefits – It remains to be seen whether these will continue - as always, these do need the active support and organisation by members so if anyone wants to promote an open and be the organising point of contact with the class association, please let a committee member know. On the other hand, the Junior Traveller series day was a great even with many visitors so we will be aiming to keep it going this year. (This is not quite the same as an Open event as we only host the event rather than organise it)

## **Bosun’s Report – Paul Bradley**
At the start of season the boat yard was given a good cut back and tidy up by community payback team mostly organised by Jon Ingham
Jon and Paul Gomersal then organised and carried out major overhaul of front of clubhouse cutting out decayed timbers and rebuilding then repainting
This does now look a lot better I think making people realise what a state it had got into over the last few years
Reminds us I think of the need for some regular maintenance throughout the year A smart and tidy looking club is likely to attract and retain new membership
Geir Rafnesson and Jon Ingham have also made a major overhaul of the membership and have signed the boat park to clearly define individual boat spaces
A big development this year was the purchase of five much needed training boats RS Qubas A big thank you to members who drove to Poole and back to deliver them to the clubhouse
Our maintenance days last year were well attended as usual and enthusiastic teams tackled many essential jobs which keep the club running smoothly.
I am currently planning a maintenance and upgrade schedule which I will circulate shortly for comments many thanks to the many members who volunteer help to the club with maintenance and improvements

## **Membership Report: Jon Ingham and the membership team**
Yeadon Sailing Club has experienced strong recruitment during 2025. This is through four main factors:

The partnership with Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre, which provided access to additional boats and a qualified instructor, boosting the number of new members able to take part in Tuesday night training.
The dedication of our sailing instructors who excelled in their mission to introduce new people to the sport of sailing. An accessible membership scheme which provides an opportunity for a wide range of people to take part in the sport. It has also encouraged families to join the club as their children effectively sail for free.
Yeadon Tarn continues to provide an ideal setting for people to learn to sail. It also provides Yeadon Sailing Club with high public visibility as one of the few urban settings for sailing, something which was recognised during last year’s visit by the Royal Yachting Association.
The club starts the 2026 season with a strong fleet of sailing boats designed to allow members to progress from training through to experiencing everything that racing has to offer. The plan for the next two seasons is to continue to develop the membership base of the club through recruitment and engagement of new members. Through this endeavour we aim to develop a strong financial base as a platform for the club’s centenary celebrations in 2028.

## **Social Media Report**
To maintain a positive Social Media presence for the Club, we use the social media outlets of FaceBook and Messenger :- We use FaceBook to publicise, post and interact with members, the wider sailing community, the local community and the interested public at large, then Messenger allows people to contact the Club if they need to speak to us and for us to respond.
On Messenger this year we seemed to have a similar number of questions to previous years. As most years we have mainly had questions on membership and training at the Club which is positive, enquires for LSAC activities which we direct on to them, and surprisingly none this year asking “Can I bring my canoe, or paddleboard, and use it on the Tarn?” type of enquiries. All enquiries are answered, some more easily than others!
On Facebook we try and upload photos of the racing and training at the Club, from Open Meetings and Events, occasionally poignant and sometimes ‘arty’ type photos when we can, also photos from other Club activities such as working parties and social events. The historic photos from the Howard Chadwick archives and the Aireborough Historical Society are always popular. We also reported ‘live’ from the North East Junior Travellers event at the Club, the delayed barley straw stuffing in April with LCC and the angling club, the Rob Burrows MNDA Ride Out from the White Swan and from the SailGP event in Portsmouth, to pick a few.
We keep posts positive to show people that the Club is active and there is lots going on. By ‘liking’ and sharing various posts from other local sailing clubs, LSAC, the RYA North East Region, local sports clubs, members of the public and businesses we have tried to keep YSC active as part of the regional sailing area, the local area and community.
We have promoted the events of our neighbours at LSAC to help them. We also try and use the page to promote, or to report from, other local events or establishments and also try to publicise things such as the Yeadon Carnival and Christmas events.
Thank you to Howard and Tim for adding some posts and answering some of the Messenger questions during the year.
Going forward we would like to increase and expand what the Club posts and keep it interesting and up to the minute but need more people helping and preparing posts to give some variety. In this ever-changing world is Facebook the best ‘ _public window_ ’ for the Club or are there better social media platforms and ways of reaching our audience that people use? And then what is our audience for these posts; YSC members, past YSC members keeping in touch, the wider sailing fraternity in Yorkshire (and beyond), potential new members from the area, the local community, the public in general?????
The other question I believe we need to think about is what are the best ways to communicate with members and to publicise Club events, we currently use a mixture of emails, WhatsApp messages and the Website, and sometimes people miss things that may be happening if they are not keeping their eyes on everything?
Please let us know if you want, or are able, to help with keeping YSC active on social media, or if you are interested in maintaining websites, many hands do make things easier
