Objectives of the Charity

Yeadon Sailing Club (YSC) was established in 1928 and sails on Yeadon Tarn which is approximately 20 acres in size and has a maximum depth of about 6 feet. YSC has a long tradition of providing excellent racing, training and social sailing opportunities to all members of the community from the Yorkshire region. YSC provides individuals of all levels with an opportunity to push themselves and take on a new challenge.

The club maintains a clubhouse, dinghy park and a fleet of club boats for the purposes of providing sailing opportunities for its membership. Encouragement and facilities are made available to attract all those who want to experience sailing. Membership is open to all and visitors are welcome.

The objects of Yeadon Sailing Club are

(1) To promote community participation in healthy recreation by providing facilities to participate in water-based amateur sport; and

(2) To advance education for the public benefit in the subject of water-based sports.

Public Benefit Statement

In setting our objectives and planning our activities, the Trustees and Committee have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.

Financial Review

YSC Financial report for 2024

At the 1st January 2025 we had £5667 in the virgin bank. There was a trading deficit over the year of £775. This would have been larger but for the income of duck food sales totalling £1980 and a donation from Denholm Sailing Club on their closure of £1750 which without these would have given a deficit of £4505. We did however see an increase in membership income and our final Virgin Bank account balance was £6502 and our Skipton Account totalled

Reserves policy

It is the clubs’ policy to maintain a balance in the region of £15,000 which equates to approximately 9 months running costs.

Risk and Internal Control

The Club has in place systems of internal controls that are designed to provide reasonable assurance against material mismanagement or loss. These include financial controls and comprehensive insurance policies are in place to ensure that insurable risks are covered.

Plans for future years

To continue to run the Club effectively we are in need a broad range of volunteers . There is a small group of active committee members who continue to run the Club.

We have piloted our new membership structure to attract new people into sailing.

The Club is still renegotiating the lease and licence with Leeds City Council. We continue to run different types of sailing activities including a number of one day trophy events, family racing days and beginners racing to encourage participation.

Structure, governance and management

The charity is governed by the constitution and was recognised by the Charity Commission on 14[th] September 2016. The club is affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association and all activities organised by the club take place under the jurisdiction of the national body.

The Trustees of Yeadon Sailing Club, acting as a Board, carry the responsibility of complying with the requirements of the Constitution.

Other key documents include

Terms of Delegation - the trustees have delegated management responsibilities to the club’s committee.

Operating Rules - laid down by the Trustees and Committee, by authority of the Constitution, and can be altered from time to time at its discretion.

The trustees meet twice per year referring operational details to the committee which meets more regularly.

PENDING INDEPENDENT EXAMINATION IN 2025

Independent Examiner’s Report to the trustees of Yeadon Sailing Club

I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31[st] December 2024, which are set out in appendix 2.

Respective responsibilities of the trustees and the examiner.

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 (2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to examine the account under section 145 of the 2011 Act, follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act and state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner’s statement

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner’s statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

To keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and

To prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met; or

2) To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

NB. Figures taken from the attendance book. As there hasn’t been anyone manning the attendance book the numbers above cannot be regarded as being completely correct. Especially as members who attend Tuesday nights are expected to register their attendance. However, it gives an overall picture of training activity at the club on Tuesday nights for the past three years.

It is with great pleasure to compile last year’s training report. 2024 turned out to be a busy year. The new membership structure and publicity brought in a new wave of much needed members. Many bought boats either already at the club or from other clubs.

The training season started as always on the first Tuesday night of April after the clocks changed, and continued until the end of September when the long winter nights started to roll in. All sessions were well attended by both Juniors and Adults throughout the season.

Weather wise, the usual millpond nights that we generally experience didn’t happen much. Which was good fun, but could be quite challenging at times, even for the more experienced.

Juniors: - An excellent turn out, some decided to pursue other activities during the close season and didn’t return. We all wish them good luck, however quite a few new families with juniors arrived to fill the gap. We had quite a wide range of ages and experience, some even had their own boats. Paul Adams from the RYA attended one Tuesday night session with the juniors which we are very grateful for, thank you. Halfway through the season we had a bit of a setback as Jackie had an unfortunate accident, which put her out of action for the rest of the training session. However, we rallied round and got through, just. Looking forward to her return in 2025.

The Junior season finished off with Yeadon hoisting a Northeast and Yorkshire Youth and Junior race series, on Sunday September the 29th. Travelers from many other clubs in the area including Otley, Ripon, Derwent and others attended as did a healthy number of Yeadon Juniors. Unfortunately for a change the wind didn’t get the memo and mostly stayed away. There was, however, just enough to hold all four races, two before lunch and two after. Welldone to all who took part including parents moving, rigging and launching the boats, catering team for putting on an excellent lunch, Race team for just about coping with the racing requirements of the Youth and Juniors, and the rescue team for dragging boats in and out from the jetting, I never heard the word boring once…Honest.

Finally, it was good to see some juniors sailing at the weekends and joining in with the racing well done to those and keep going. Thank you to the clubs regular racers for their support and encouragement.

Adults: - I think it was safe to say that the previous 2023 and 22 season that the adult train was a little poorly attended, and down on activity. So, it was good to see that all change in 2024. Once again thanks to the new membership structure. The challenge of taking up a new sport isn’t easy, but it was great to see the enthusiasm of just wanting to get out there and have a go. By the end of the season many were joining in with the racing and doing rather well for their first year of sailing. Well done, keep it up. On Sunday the 21st of July we held a full day’s training session, which was very well attended, by both Junior and Adults. A simple triangular course was set in lightish winds. I think everybody got something out of the day, one or two even practicing their capsize drill. We are intending to run more in 2025.

Catering: - This has now become well established on Tuesday nights and looks to be doing very well. As I am usually either rushing to get to the club or busy sorting other things out, I don’t get much of a chance to thank all that are involved. So, Thank You to all who help out. Hope it continues.

2024 has, however, had its challenges. First, the equipment. We have thirteen club boats all of which are like the rest of us getting on. Being a boat owner I am fully aware of the time and cost of keeping a boat (whatever age it is) going. We need to find a way of replenishing the fleet and equipment, if anyone can help please let me or any other committee members know. Second, Volunteers. The club training sessions depend on regular volunteers and I and the club are very thankful for the support shown so far. However, I don’t think anyone would deny it’s a skeleton team that sometimes just pulls through. So please if you can help Do so. Finally, well done to everyone who attended and a Big Thank you all who helped. See you in 2025. Important dates for 2025.

Training meeting: - 25tht March 7pm at the club house, For instructors and volunteers only. If you wish to volunteer for the training season in whatever capacity, Instructing, Rescue, Launching, Boat Maintenance Catering please try and attend or message me to say that you are available.

Club Boat set up and clean: - 1st April gates open at 5pm until dark. This is very important. Please try and attend. Bring buckets and Sponges. Wellies recommended. If the club boats are not ready this will have to be done the week after.

Training Starts: - 8th April Gates open from 5pm until dark. Aim to get Juniors on the water for 6pm until 7.007.30pm depending on conditions. Adults arrive at 6pm (although more than welcome earlier) on the water At 7pm until 8.00-8.30pm again depending on conditions. NO SAILING UNTIL THE RESCUE BOAT IS ON THE WATER AND MANNED. SAILING STOPS ONCE THE MANNED RESCUE BOAT HAS GONE IN.

Sailing Report – Jon Weble

Another year of varied sailing with many days with little or too much wind, but there has been good participation in racing and other sailing activities - Particularly from September onwards where a number of members from Tuesday night sessions started sailing at the weekends. This was very good to see, and the success they have had should act as an encouragement to all those going through training and thinking about what comes next.

Race duties have yet again been challenging but, leaving race duties as requiring people to actively volunteer still seems to be the most acceptable option. There wasn't always an OOD available (and rarely an AOOD) so sometimes Pursuit racing was the order of the day but, because of the wide range of Handicaps, this isn't the best for all classes (and can be complicated to get the timings right). We would ask again that everyone participates actively with the OOD duties, even if you don't sail much (or only participate on training evenings for instance). We can train anyone to do a duty, mostly by them helping as an AOOD, which is actually quite good fun and a great introduction to how races work - you don't need any experience to volunteer as an AOOD.

Yeadon Sailing Club Charity Number: 1169182

While we haven’t run much Social Sailing specifically, members sailing while racing is running seems to be working OK – Indeed, racers actively give advice and help to those less experienced. This works well from all perspectives as, the more people who are involved (regardless of experience level) the better the whole club is for it.

We have shown ourselves as a very forward-looking club and have often changed our plans to see if we can improve. Members at any stage of their sailing journey are, not just welcome, but are actively encouraged to get involved, suggest changes and make the club better. Just because we do things one way today doesn’t mean we can’t do it differently tomorrow .

Bosun’s Report – Paul Bradley

No major operations this year such as rewiring or re roofing

Many people donated their time in 2024 to the benefit of the club and this is much appreciated thanks to all concerned

Many old and new members have spoken to me expressing an interest in participating in club improvements in 2025 this is very positive for the club and much appreciated

What has made a big impact at the turn of the year is the work done by the community payback team Also successful negotiation with local company Turner and Wood in supplying £ 450 of internal and external paint free of charge

This is initiative was lead by Jon Ingham and among other things has led to cutting and weeding of entire boat park and hedge and Permanent labelling of all boat spaces and painting inside and outside of the clubhouse

I would like to thank Jon for all the work he has put in to make this happen.

We have three maintenance days in diary for this year 2025 March 15th 25th May 3rd Ten o ’clock to approx 1 o’clock Tuesday 25th of May 5-30 to check out club boats I will be printing a list of jobs

Of particular concern is to fix the leak around the window seals which is allowing damp into the timbers at the top of the roof

I am currently looking at our options for a fix

2024 was the first year for the new £50 joining fee plus donation. As a result, we have seen an increase in new household memberships with a slight increase in household-based members. There have been 24 new households joining accounting for 38 new members. We have 65 households as members.

Social Media Report

To maintain a positive Social Media presence for the Club, we use the social media outlets of FaceBook and Messenger :- We use FaceBook to look out and actively interact with members, the wider sailing community and the interested public at large, then Messenger allows people to contact the Club and for us to respond.

We try and upload photos of Racing and Training at the Club, the Open Meetings and Events, occasionally poignant and sometimes ‘arty ’type photos when we can, also photos from any Working Parties and Social Events. The historic photos from the Howard Chadwick archives (and the Aireborough Historical Society) are always popular. This year we celebrated local sailor Heather Thomas from Otley Sailing Club and her all female crew winning the round the world Ocean Globe Race in Maiden. We also reported ‘live ’from the North East Junior Travellers event at the Club, being presented with the Sunsail award at the Southampton Boat Show and from the America’s Cup finals in Barcelona.

We tried to keep posts positive to show people that the Club is active and there is lots going on. By ‘liking ’ and sharing various posts from local sailing clubs, LSAC, the RYA North East Region, local sports clubs, members of the public and businesses we have tried to keep YSC active as part of the regional sailing area, the local area and community We have promoted the events of our neighbours at LSAC to help them. We also use the page to promote, or to report from, other local events or establishments and also to publicise things such as the Yeadon Carnival and Christmas events

On Messenger this year we seemed to have a similar amount of questions to previous years. As most years we have mainly had questions on the lines of “Can I bring my canoe, or paddleboard, and use it on the Tarn and equally we get enquiries about LSAC activities that we can direct those enquiries to them. We have had some enquiries to us about our training and memberships which is always positive. We were, however, unable to help the local “Men in a Shed” group who were looking for an old road trailer to make into a chassis that they could build a shed on to promote and support mindfulness of elder people in the community. All enquiries are answered, some more easily than others !

Thank you to Howard and Tim for adding some posts and answering some of the Messenger questions during the year. We would like to increase and expand what the Club posts and keep it interesting and up to the minute but need we more people preparing posts to give some variety and we definitely need some help and support to develop the Club’s Social Media presence further, especially to understand the everchanging possibilities of Social Media !

The other question to think about is what are the best ways to communicate with members and to publicise Club events, we currently use a mixture of emails, WhatsApp messages and the Website and sometimes people miss things that may be happening if they miss a message or two, or if it only goes out one way ?

Please let us know if you want / are able to help with keeping YSC an active presence of social media, or if you are interested in maintaining websites, many hands makes things easier J

Thanks,

Neil and Rachel McInnes
