## **Objectives of the Charity**
Yeadon Sailing Club (YSC) was established in 1928 and sails on Yeadon Tarn which is approximately 20 acres in size and has a maximum depth of about 6 feet. YSC has a long tradition of providing excellent racing, training and social sailing opportunities to all members of the community from the Yorkshire region. YSC provides individuals of all levels with an opportunity to push themselves and take on a new challenge.
The club maintains a clubhouse, dinghy park and a fleet of club boats for the purposes of providing sailing opportunities for its membership. Encouragement and facilities are made available to attract all those who want to experience sailing. Membership is open to all and visitors are welcome.
The objects of Yeadon Sailing Club are (1) To promote community participation in healthy recreation by providing facilities to participate in water-based amateur sport; and
(2) To advance education for the public benefit in the subject of water-based sports.
## **Public Benefit Statement**
In setting our objectives and planning our activities, the Trustees and Committee have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.
## **Review of Activities**
The pandemic continued to place limits on the activities we could offer (particularly in the Spring) however during the year we resumed a range of sailing and training.
We are also in the process of negotiating a new lease with Leeds City Council.
The committee is a small and dedicated team of volunteers who have had some difficult decisions to make regarding working with the covid restrictions and the clubhouse refurbishment. We would welcome new members of the committee to bring new ideas and help to continue to develop the Club in the future.

## **Financial Review**
As at the 31[st] December 2021 we had £18,879 on deposit at the Skipton Building Society, £4379 on deposit in the Skipton BS Building Fund and £19705 at Yorkshire Bank.
The accounts show a deficit for the year of £5941. We received Business Support Grants grants from Leeds City Council totalling £8197. These were grants made to businesses (who pay business rates) who had to close due to the national lockdowns.
This year has seen significant expenditure (£10,619) on the building, including new electrics and rebuilding of two external walls The funding for this work came from the Building Fund.. If this figure is taken out of general expenditure, we would have had a surplus of £4511.
The membership income is still around two-thirds of the 2019 pre-pandemic membership income. We offered reduced fees to people who had been members in 2019 and 2020 and this helped the membership numbers to bounce back from 2020. A number of members supported the Club through donations in lieu of the reduced membership fees which we greatly appreciated. The expenditure has also been considerably less than in usual years although we do still have fixed costs including rent and licence, utilities, insurance and fees such as for the RYA subscription.
## **Reserves policy**
It is the clubs’ policy to maintain a balance in the region of £15,000 which equates to approximately 9 months running costs.
## **Risk and Internal Control**
The Club has in place systems of internal controls that are designed to provide reasonable assurance against material mismanagement or loss. These include financial controls and comprehensive insurance policies are in place to ensure that insurable risks are covered.

## **Plans for future years**
The phased refurbishment of the Clubhouse continues. This year we have had to do major work on two external walls as we discovered there was significant amount of rot from leaking windows. We also renewed the electrics to make them fit for purpose.
The focus for 2022 will be the continued recovery from the covid pandemic, in particular how we attract new members and fundraising to continue the refurbishment of the clubhouse. We also need more volunteers on the committee to continue to run the Club effectively, including increasing the membership, considering additional activities and fundraising for the ongoing Clubhouse development.
The Club is currently renegotiating the lease and licence with Leeds City Council. We are continuing to consider different types of sailing activities including a number of one day trophy events, social sailing at a variety of times as well as continuing with a range of training activities and the racing calendar.
## **Structure, governance and management**
The charity is governed by the constitution and was recognised by the Charity Commission on 14[th] September 2016. The club is affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association and all activities organised by the club take place under the jurisdiction of the national body.
The Trustees of Yeadon Sailing Club, acting as a Board, carry the responsibility of complying with the requirements of the Constitution.
Other key documents include
Terms of Delegation - the trustees have delegated management responsibilities to the club’s committee. Operating Rules - laid down by the Trustees and Committee, by authority of the Constitution, and can be altered from time to time at its discretion.
The trustees meet twice per year referring operational details to the committee which meets more regularly.

## **Independent Examiner’s Report to the trustees of Yeadon Sailing Club**
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31[st] December 2021, which are set out in appendix 2.
## **Respective responsibilities of the trustees and the examiner.**
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 (2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to examine the account under section 145 of the 2011 Act, follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act and state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner’s statement**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts,and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## **Independent examiner’s statement**
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
- 1) Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
To keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
To prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met; or
- 2) To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1. Accounting policies**
## **Basis of accounting**
The trustees have taken advantage of section 133 of the Charities Act 2011 and have prepared the accounts on a receipts and payments basis.
No changes have been made to the accounts for previous years.
## **Taxation**
As a registered charity the organisation benefits from rates relief and is generally exempt from income tax and capital gains tax but not from VAT. Irrecoverable VAT is included in the cost of those items to which it relates.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity.
The Building Fund is money raised to be used for the improvement of the Clubhouse.

3. The money held in the Skipton Building Society Building Fund has been identified as money to be used on the Clubhouse project.
This money has been raised through a number of fundraising initiatives as well as through donations from individuals and groups.
## 4. Trustee/Officer/Committee Member Expenses
The club officers, committee members and trustees work entirely on a voluntary basis and no trustee, officer or committee member received any expenses during this year.

## **Appendix 1 – Officer’s Reports**
## **An overview of the year – Glenis Burgess**
Another challenging year for the country and for the club! We overcame it in our usual ways of dedication to sailing, a good committee and excellent membership.
Unfortunately we had to cancel the Laying Up Supper, but later in the season, we managed more sailing – see Tony and Jon’s report on that. Several of the weekend and Wednesday series ran than had in 2020, including the Frostbite. Tony had some work to do to organise the prizes and engraving. but went ahead with other plans for club maintenance.
After a year of no maintenance, the club looked very sad, but a few days of moving boats, getting rid of boats beyond repair, stacking and eventually disposing of tyres, and mowing, made it look much more presentable. We were quite proud with the results. Towards the end of the year, this continued with maintenance on the clubhouse itself. New cladding to both sides of the building has both enhanced the look and contributed enormously to the waterproofing and security of the building – thanks to everyone at the working parties who came along and made such a difference.
We’ve also been making inroads onto the renewal of the lease and licence, with our requests for additional times and days being sent to Leeds City Council – we await their response.
Training was able to start again – more with people who had started with us before lockdown – and there were many excellent Tuesday evenings on the water. We hope to welcome those trainees back again in 2022.
Even with reduced numbers of people around the park and at the club, we managed to sell some bags of bird food
Recognition needs to go to so many people – there was a lot of work done to identify boat owners and organise the dinghy park, work on the training programme, the 2022 sailing season, organising and carrying out maintenance, the lease and license, running the races, bagging up bird food, and everything else which went into keeping the club going in this ours second difficult year. The Committee also had a continuing job of keeping up with the various changes in Covid-19 regulations. It’s clear that people read and kept to them as there were no cases of positive tests, or Covid-19 itself reported as generating from the Club. A real success.
## **Sailing Report – Jon Wheble & Tony Langley**
The sailing season resumed at Easter with pursuit racing and we were able to get the safety boat out on the water. However, there were still restrictions on using the club house. The usual handicap racing returned in May but we had already missed 3 trophy races by then. There was a lack of wind most days which gave an, advantage to the solo. This changed in the frostbite series but by this time we were able to use the clubhouse which was warm and jacket potatoes with beans went down well.
The new way of grouping races together into blocks of six weeks also seems to be working well so we'll stick with it (unless someone comes up with something better!).
## **Bosun’s Report – Paul Bradley**
Leaking window - After a long running process we are still left with a small leak in the window seal after the window fitter has attempted to completely seal the window with varying degrees of success 5 separate attempts in all.
I think we should look at the problem ourselves and I am sure we have the skills to fix this not an ideal situation but in my opinion a practical way ahead.
Electrical refit - To comply with our insurance responsibilities the electrical system was inspected and it came up as a fail.
It needed a considerable refit which is now complete and up to date with current regulations.

Structural repairs - Some of the external cladding of the clubhouse and changing room window frames were quite decayed and leaking water into the main structural framework of the club.
Tony Dufton is in the process of rectifying this replacing p[plywood cladding with treated timber and new upvc windows This will prevent any further deterioration and also looks a great deal better.
In future we may have to look at the plywood cladding on the slipway side, at the moment it does not seem to be letting water in significantly but it will need attention eventually.
## **Membership Report**
We have continued to use Webcollect to manage the membership. We offered a reduced membership fee to previous members from 2019 & 2020 which meant many members returned to the Club. We have also attracted some new members and we need to continue to consider how we grow the membership.

## **Social Media Update - Neil and Rachel McInnes**
It has been another challenging year maintaining a positive Social Media presence.
Our two main social media outlets are FaceBook and Messenger :-
We use FaceBook to look out and actively interact with members, the wider sailing community and the interested public at large, then Messenger allows people to contact the Club and us to respond.
We started off the year well by winning the RYA NE Photo of the Month for my photo of everyone launching for one of the first races of the year
Tuesday Nights restarted after a year of no training activity on the water. That lead to an interesting exchange of views with on Messenger representatives of the Fishing Club while they got used to Tuesdays evenings being busy again.
On FaceBook we uploaded photos of sailing, racing and the maintenance sessions throughout the Season. One of our best liked photo sets was when Mike and Barbara and George and Mary were made Life Members of the Club and we had lunchtime celebration for them.
We tried to keep posts positive items to show people that the Club is active and there is lots going on. By ‘liking’ and sharing various posts from local clubs, LSAC, the RYA North East Region, members of the public and businesses we have tried to keep YSC active as part of the local area and community. We feature fairly regularly on posts by the Aireborough Historical Society so we share the love back to them and link them to our posts where we can. In fact, Howard featured in their Back-Chat Series of interviews with people with a long local association with the area.
We finished the year with our most followed post about the ‘Great Swan Rescue’ !
One evening just after Christmas we started to get messages on Messenger about a swan being stuck in the Dinghy Park. Luckily we were in so it was a case of coats on, club keys found and torches picked up. We quickly put a post onto to the Yeadon – Our Community Facebook to let people know that we going to sort and hopefully to stop more concerned messages coming through !
We found a young swan wandering in the narrow walkway between the decking and the side gate. We opened the side gate and the swan padded out of the gate with a slight embarrassed look about it ! Rachel followed the
swan as it padded off along the footpath and videoed it as it returned to the water. We uploaded this video and had a great number of views and likes.
Apart from Swans on Messenger we continue to have a number of enquiries about training which is positive. Equally we get enquiries about LSAC activities that we can direct on to them. We have a number of questions on the lines of “Can I canoe, or paddleboard, or use my rubber dinghy, or swim, on or in the Tarn !
Or has someone picked up my child’s cuddly toy after it dropped somewhere in the park ???
All questions asked were answered, some more easily than others !

We would like to increase and expand what the Club posts and keep it interesting but need more people preparing posts to give some variety and we definitely need some help and support to develop the Club’s Social Media presence further, especially to understand the ever-changing possibilities of Social Media !
