The Trustees present their report together with the accounts for the year ended 31 December 2023

Objectives and Policies: The Charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation governed by the rules adopted on 7 September 2016.

The objects of the CIO are:

To educate the public and members of the Regiment in the history and military accomplishments of the Regiment, or which further the objects of the CIO, and to promote military efficiency and encourage recruitment by public exhibition of the Collection in a Museum or Museums or such other public places as the Trustees may, from time to time, decide and to conserve, restore, repair, reconstruct and preserve objects in the Collection.

The Trustees confirm that they have referred to the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning future activities.

Trustees: The Trustees must have, and accept, ultimate responsibility for directing the affairs of the Royal Lancers Museum Trust, and ensuring that it is solvent, well-run, and meeting the needs for which it has been set up. Additionally, Trustees should be appointed on the basis of their knowledge of the Regiment and the collection.

Trustees are recruited and appointed by the full board of Trustees. A record is made in the Minutes. Details of this process are laid down in the Governing Document. The new Trustee is required to read the current Charity Commission's guidance covering the responsibilities of the Trustees, and on Public Benefit and are required to read and comply with the CIO document which each of them receives.

The Trustees are required under the Charities Act 1993 to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the Charity's financial activities during the year and of it's financial position at the end of the year (unless the Charity is entitled to prepare accounts on the alternative receipts and payments basis). In preparing financial statements giving a true and fair view, the Trustees should follow best practice and:

and

d) Prepare the financial statements on an ongoing concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the Charity will continue in operation.

Accounts

The Trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which are such as to disclose with reasonable accuracy the financial position of the Charity at any time and to enable them as Trustees to ensure that the accounts comply with Charity Law. The Trustees are also responsible for safeguarding the Charity's assets and ensuring their proper application in accordance with Charity Law and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of error, fraud and other irregularities.

RLMT Report December 2023

Overview

We continue to have two museums, one in Derby operating under the Derby Museum and Arts Trust and the other at Thorseby operating under the management of the Royal Lancers and Nottinghamshire Yeomanry Museum Trust Limited.

Trustees

There are currently five trustees, though a fifth is likely to be appointed in early 2023. The intended composition consists of a Chairman, one trustee from each half of our heritage plus one civilian with specific medals expertise, and the Commanding Officer (ex officio).

Chariman's Statement

Now, I believe, fully recovered after the coronavirus hiatus, the Museum Trust has resumed its place as the world's most important repository of Lancer objects, trophies, artworks and archives.

Visitor numbers have recovered and our programme of conservation and acquisition is back in full swing, with a team of highly committed volunteers giving their time to maintain the high standard of our displays, including our Conqueror tank on loan form the Tank Museum at Bovington, not fully repainted in regimental livery and renamed "Growler" in homage to Capt Holtby, our recently-retired, long serving curator.

Another highly rated acquisition was the Queen's father's 12th Lancer desert uniform, which will be an important part of a display highlighting the Regiment's connection with the monarchy.

Sadly, the museum in Thoresby Hall fell victim to an audacious cat burglary which resulted in the loss of several important piecese of silver, abstracted through the floor of the case in which they were displayed.

The burglar was quickly caught and sentenced, so tribute is due to the efficient detective work of the Nottinghamshire Police, but the stolen goods remain at large - probably in the form of an ingot worth a few thousand pounds. Crime evidently doesn't pay much.

By contrast, the irreplaceable silver pieces were valued at tens of thousands of pounds, which our insurers have duly coughed up to create a fund that will be used first to implement security improvements and then applied to finance future acquisitions.

These accounts show a steady financial outlook in which we are well buoyed up by support from the Royal Lancers Charitable Association as well as by the Ministry of Defence's Grant in aid. I am confident this support will be maintained and take this opportunity to express the gratitude of the Museum Trustees for the excellent support we receive from the Association and from the Regimental Secretary, Col Everard.
