Section D Achievements and performance
## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**
The autumn of 2021 saw the completion and installation of the 'History Whisperer' digital immersive project for Liverpool's iconic St George's Hall. The project was commissioned by Culture Liverpool and was developed in partnership with two immersive technology companies: Gazooky Studios and Immersive Interactive. It combines storytelling, immersive projections, lighting and original music, created by Music in Mind and recorded by musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. It has been received extremely well by both critics and public and will serve as an educational experience and one of Liverpool's tourist attractions for four years. 'Like A Butterfly' began in 2020 and was postponed due to the covid 19 lockdowns. It aimed to combine the disciplines of dance and boxing, through a focus on the life and work of Muhammad Ali, to show the 'art in sport' and to inspire young people to take part in physical activity. The work in 2020 saw a team of young dancers working closely with the coaches and boxers from the Phoenix Fire boxing club in Warrington. They were able to share ideas and techniques that would then form part of the creative process for the project and performances. After running for a number of weeks, the workshops were stopped due to the lockdown in March 2020 however on resuming the project 2 years later in early 2020, the work was carried into the rehearsals and choreographer Ryan Lee Seager was able to work with the dancers to incorporate the boxing techniques learned in the workshops. Teacher and choreographer Stacey Atkinson also worked with community dancers and school children to develop the ideas further and develop their piece 'Reborn' for the performance. The project was received well and we would like to expand the concept further in the future. March 2020 also saw the completion and performance of 'Locked Away'; a two year project to capture the stories and emotions behind the covid 19 lockdowns. The project began during the first lockdown of 2020 and was developed in partnership with The Regenda Group. We were able to use video technology to interview over 100 people from the North West to capture their feelings during the challenging lockdown periods and their interviews were developed into an hour long video opera that received its premiere in March 2022 at The Good Business Festival by an orchestra of musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Music In Mind was delighted to win a national Smiley Charity Film award in March 2020 for the 'Behind Doors' project that told the stories of those affected by domestic abuse. The piece received its premiere back in December 2020 as an online live stream event given during the lockdown period. Music In Mind has continued to work with The Brain Charity on the innovative 'Music Makes Us Happy' dementia project. A Music in Mind singing specialist worked alongside a speech therapist to deliver singing workshops to people living with dementia with the aim of using music to prolong speech. New resources were developed that proved successful in helping people to form certain sounds that they were previously struggling to make. The project has been running for 3 years and will complete in September 2023.

The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ending 31 July 2022 which have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis under sections 132-166 of the Charities Act 2011.
## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Objectives and aims**
The objects of the CIO are:-
To promote and protect the good health of the general public through the use of music and the arts.
To advance the education of the public in the health benefits of music and the arts through educational workshops and performances.
## **Public benefit**
The trustees are meeting their public benefit requirement by ensuring the general public benefit from any performances that take place and any workshops that take place are accessible by all.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**
## **Financial position**
The charity received a grant of £1,500 from the Arts Council during the year and generated income from events of £736. Further funding from the Brain charity was received after the year end.
At the year end bank reserves amounted to £15,210.
## **Reserves policy**
The charity does not have a policy on reserves, however all income and property of the CIO must be applied solely towards the promotion of the objects.
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees. Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**
## **Governing document**
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a constitution of a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, dated 30th August 2016 and amended on 1st July 2017.
## **Recruitment and appointment of new trustees**
There must be at least two charity trustees and they must be a natural person aged 16 or over.
No one is entitled to act as a charity trustee whether on appointment or on any re-appointment until he or she has expressly acknowledged, in whatever way the charity trustees decide, his or her acceptance of the office of charity trustee.
At least one of the trustees of the CIO must be 18 years of age or over. If there is no trustee aged at least 18 years, the remaining trustees may only act to call a meeting of the charity trustees, or appoint a new charity trustee.

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of Music in Mind CIO (the Trust) for the year ended 31 July 2022.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under Section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by Section 130 of the Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**
## **Basis of preparing the financial statements**
The financial statements of the charity have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis under sections 132-166 of the Charities Act 2011.
## **Income**
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity is in receipt of the funds.
## **Expenditure**
Expenditure is accounted for in the period in which it is paid and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
## **Taxation**
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
