personal stories of the victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse. It aims to raise empathy and understanding whilst supporting the work of Safenet and will be used as a resource for training and awareness raising by the organisation.

Filming sessions for the ‘Reflective Voices of Lockdown’, retitled as ‘Locked Away’, continued outdoor during January and February in compliance with the lockdown restrictions. The project, in partnership with The Regenda Group and match funded by Arts Council England, aimed to capture the personal stories behind the pandemic. It began with 4 months of online interviews during the first national lockdown from May 2020 and continued with 3 months of live filming sessions in early 2021 in Rochdale, Fleetwood, Manchester and Liverpool. The work was due to be premiered at the ‘Good Business Festival’ in October 2020 but was postponed until March 2022 due to the continuation of the lockdown restrictions.

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

Music In Mind continued to adapt to the restrictions imposed by the Covid 19 pandemic and was able to continue to develop projects and engage with the public. The ‘Behind Doors’ domestic abuse project, in partnership with Safenet and the Calico Group, was completed and delivered online as a live stream event in early December 2020 with musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra. The work was well received and there are plans to widen the scope by developing a series of educational workshops and presentations to raise awareness about domestic abuse. Despite the 3 postponements of The Good Business festival due to Covid 19, the work continued on the ‘Lockdown Voice’ project as online interviews and some outdoor live filming in preparation for the rescheduling of The Good Business Festival in 2022. The public response has been extremely positive to the sessions with 120 people offering interviews, artwork, poetry and creative writing to the project. Music In Mind continued to communicate with the ‘Like A Butterfly’ creative team through online planning sessions and workshops in preparation for project delivery in 2022.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Objectives and aims**

The objects of the CIO are:-

To promote and protect the good health of the general public through the use of music and the arts.

To advance the education of the public in the health benefits of music and the arts through educational workshops and performances.

## **Public benefit**

The trustees are meeting their public benefit requirement by ensuring the general public benefit from any performances that take place and any workshops that take place are accessible by all.

## **ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE Charitable activities**

The main activities during the year were:

1. Completion and performance of the 'Behind Doors' project in partnership with The Calico Group

2. Development of the 'Voices of Reflection - The Lockdown Project in partnership with Regenda.

3. The creation of 'The History Whisperer' digital immersive installation as part of a consortium with Gazooky Studios and Immersive Interactive for Liverpool's St. George's Hall.

4. Continuation of the 'Singing Makes You Happy' dementia workshops with The Brain Charity.

The last 4 months of 2020 saw the completion and performance of the 'Behind Doors' video opera in partnership with the Calico Group and their Safenet organisation. Due to the Covid 19 restrictions, the performance was given online in December 2020 as a live stream event with a string quartet from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. The piece tells the deeply personal stories of the victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse. It aims to raise empathy and understanding whilst supporting the work of Safenet and will be used as a resource for training and awareness raising by the organisation.

Filming sessions for the 'Reflective Voices of Lockdown', retitled as 'Locked Away', continued outdoor during January and February in compliance with the lockdown restrictions. The work was due to be premiered at the 'Good Business Festival' in October 2020 but was postponed until March 2022 due to the continuation of the lockdown restrictions.

The 'History Whisperer' was a digital immersive installation telling the history of Liverpool's iconic St. George's Hall. Music In Mind was successful in winning the bid as part of a consortium with Gazooky Studios and Immersive Interactive. The project, combining music, artwork, film, storytelling and cutting edge digital technology, was due to open in July 2021 but was postponed until October 2021 due to the Covid 19 restrictions. The installation will run for 4 years and will be open to the public as part of Liverpool's tourist attractions.

Music In Mind continues to work with the Brain Charity to deliver the 'Music Makes You Happy' dementia workshops. The workshops were suspended during the lockdown periods of 2020 and 2021 however Music In Mind created 3 original songs during June and July in consultation with a speech and language therapist for the recommencement of the face to face sessions in September 2021. The songs use specific vocalisations, words and syllables to support the prolongation of speech for people living with dementia and are a resource to be used for the future.

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of Music in Mind CIO (the Trust) for the year ended 31 July 2021.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
