Chairmans report
Firstly let me just take a moment to mention the passing of Peter Foyle a highly valued member of the group. His dedication and help gained us needed funding and he would also take care of the charity commission paperwork. He will be remembered fondly by us all.
The friends of wincobank have had a good year last year with some fantastic events and talks.
First we had a well attended heritage fair over 1000 people through the door and plenty of interest in the friends of wincobank hill and the Zion graveyard. We also had lots of good talks
The first was a talk by me on the Brigantian frontier then we had a fantastic talk by Andrew Calow a talk on his time in Sheffield theatres. We had a talk by Steve Thompson on the history of the coop. We had Penny Rea who gave a talk on the Rawson family. And finally our vice chairman David Green spoke to us about the flower estate.
Our talks have been of fantastic quality and it is fantastic to have such knowegeble members who can deliver such informative talks.
The Brigantes have again traveled up and down the country starting in Thornbough for the Beltane festival then it was York Ebarcum Festival, Malton and Brough finishing back in york for the Saturnalia these events expand our exposure and networks they also bring in much needed funds to the charity. I would like to thank all members of the Brigantes for they’re hard work and dedication.
As a Brigante i was also privileged to be invited to our local primary schools to educate the children on all things iron Age. This was a joint program with the schools and Friends of Wincobank as we are honoured as they changed they’re names to the joint Hillfort schools and as you may remember we where honoured a couple of years ago when the local schools trust changed its name to the Brigantia trust. This shows the difference that the friends of wincobank hill have made to the area since its foundation an achievement we should all be very proud of.
We also had our light up the hill event that was a simpler affair but still as powerful. We had 150 people in attendance and members pulled together to make this a memorable night. We had music from the piper and two local musicians and the play by the brigantes. I had alot of positive feedback and people could hear thanks to our new PA system. Funding was thanks to local area funding.
We have seen a decline in membership but this is the case across the heritage sector but we still have a core group of dedicated members.
I would also like to thank dedicated members who have worked tirelessly every month in the conservation sessions to keep the hill tidy and well kept.
This year I would like the group to work more closely with our sister group the Friends of Zion graveyard as im aware we share a lot of the same membership. I would also like to put on a summer fair to raise necessary funds for light up the hill 2026. This will have to be set in motion soon and I hope the chapel will work with us to achieve this. I was thinking around august time for a summer fair.
I hope that this year will be as good as last year if not better.
