CHAIRMANS REPORT

COMPILED BY THE VICE CHAIR DANNY ALLSEBROOK ON BEHALF OF DAVID GREEN.

I want to welcome you all to this AGM. It has been an uphill struggle for all heritage groups across the country recovering from the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic. The group has done tremendously well to get things up and running again since our last AGM.

We started this year with the Sheffield heritage fair an enjoyable event that we where glad to be continuing active part of. We had over four hundred visitors over the two days and were told by the organisers that it was the most successful yet.

We also started our live talks these where:

A talk by me on the interpretation of Conisbrough castle.

A consultation on the new build and meeting with Sheffield Forgemasters showing our strength and local influence within the community.

We had a wonderful wildlife talk last month on gardening for wildlife.

We also started up in January our conservation and litter picks and these will continue as we work closely with the local rangers that do such a fantastic job in helping us to protect our beloved hill. If you would like to join the next conservation group will be this Saturday the 8[th] of October.

On this note there has also been a meeting about damage from metal detecting on the hillfort and a meeting was set up with local councillors, the county archaeologist, community heritage officer, Police, Historic England and the committee members and letters have been distributed to residents and we are working towards more work to protect the hill for future generations.

We would like to ask all members to be vigilant and to report any strange behaviour or illegal metal detecting to the police on 101.

The Brigantes are back in action with our new living history camp with cartimadua. and with funding from the ward pot grant we were able to purchase new Wincobank hill leaflets and a new tent for the Brigantes reenactment. We will be attending Thornborough henge, Brough, near hull, the Eboracum festival in York and hopefully we will also be doing the firth park festivals. We are also hoping that in 2023 we will have the funding to restart a new light up the hill.

I have also started the wheels in motion to have ground penetrating radar undertaken on the hill with two talks given with this. I have started the process of getting a heritage lottery bid to pay for the archaeological survey and community outreach also we may incorporate the light up the hill project within this, but I will update members as things move forward.

We are hoping that over the next year great things will be happening within the friends group and you can join us for more interesting talks over the year plus our litter picks and conservation groups.
