The objective of the Frlends of the World of Bede Is to advance the educatoon of the
publlc In the Ilfe, work and times of the Venerable Bede, prlmarily by supporting and
asslsting the charitable work of the Bede Museum at Jarrow, but also through Its
own activlties away from the Bede Museum at locatlons wlth hlstorlcal Ilnks to the
Venerable Bede and An810 Saxon Brltaln more generally.

Summary of the Main Activlties Undertaken for the Public Benefit In Relation to the
Charlty's Objects.
The Charity continued to lialse on a regular basis wlth representatives from Jarrow
Hall, the arm of Groundwork that Is responsible for the day to day running of the
Bede Museum. These dlscussions Included matters such as the Interlor design of an
An81o-Saxon replica building that was being renovated. Changes to the layout of the
Museum's displays was also a matter of discusslon on a number of occaslons.
The Charfty played a slgnlficant role In plannlng and preparlng for a major exhlbltion
at the Bede Museum commemorating the life and achlevements of the founder of
the Museum, the late Professor Dame Rosemary Cramp, the renowned academlc
who from 1963 until 1978 ran the archaeological excavations of the medieval
monastery at Jarrow where Bede Ilved and wrote works of such great hlstorlcal
Importance. The Charlty worked closely wlth the stsff of the Bede Museum In
arranglng the physlcal and wrltten contents of the exhlbltion. The Exhlbltion opened
In May 2024.
In September 2024 the Charlty presented the bespoke repllca An81o-Saxon sword
whlch It had commissloned to the Bede Museum. On the same occaslon It held a
study day devoted to new perspectives on the Sword In Anglo-saxon England, whlch
comprlsed three publlc lectures and a demonstration by a r&enactment group of
Anglo-saxon combat technlques.
In Ortober and November 2024 the Charlty held a serles of three public lectures to
celebrate the 950th annlversary of the re-foundation of the monastery at Jarrow In
1074.
In September 2024 the Charlty or8anised a tour of the archaeologlcal dig at
Llndlsfarne Priory, presented by the archaeologist In charge of the excavation, Dr.
Davld Petts.
The Friends of the World of Bede continued to lialse wlth and advlse Groundwork on
the best means of achieving greater recognition of the importance of the Bede
Museum in promoting knowledge of the Anglo Saxon hlstory of the North East of
England and In publicising the academic significance of its collection.
The Charity held discusslons with Groundwork regarding a new arrangement for it to
have formal input into Groundworvs decisions regardlng the Bede Museum's
collection, academlc standing and future general direction, whlch resulted in one of

the Charltys Trustees becoming a member of the Jarrow Hall Management
Committee.
The Charlty was consulted on plans by the Bede Museum's Research and Education
Manager Dr. Marco Romeo-pitone to carry out an archaeological excavation in the
vlcinity of the Jarrow Monastery durlng the summer of 2025, the flrst such
excavation slnce Professor Cramp's dlgs ended In the late 19705.

The Trustees reserve pollcy Is to retaln at least slx months normal expendlture In
reserve. On thls basls the Charlty has sufficlent reserves to meet thls requlrement.
Statutory Notes to the Accounts
The Charltys Income for the perlod Is £703. Consequentlyp the charlty has declded
not to face the expendlture of havlng the 2025 accounts examlned by an
Independent Examiner. as requlred for CIOS wlth an annual Income of £25,000 or
more.
