**Trustees’ Annual Report for the period** ## **From 1[st] July 2020 To 30[th] June 2021** **Charity name: Friends of Think About Them** **Charity registration number: 1168956** ## **Objectives and Activities** Friends of Think About Them (FOTAT) aims to support the charitable work of Think About Them (TAT), a Kenyan Community Based Organisation (CBO) working in Nakuru, Kenya in such ways as shall be thought fit, in particular by the provision of grants and raising awareness of the work of the organisation. TAT is a community based organization (CBO) working towards improving the status of children in Nakuru, Kenya with special emphasis on the welfare of children living on the street. Activities are carried out through - education / training - the advancement of health or saving of lives - the prevention or relief of poverty - economic / community development / employment - human rights / religious or racial harmony / equality or diversity This year has not been without its fair share of challenges, especially as the global pandemic of Covid 19 continues to impact the world. Best Interest of the Child has been a leading factor towards every input in place to attain the objectives. A lot of people have greatly contributed both in kind and cash. Since August 2016 to date, there has been a great progress in TAT as a program through its activities. So many people have come on board to assist achieving the dream. It has been a network of encouragement and teamwork. ## **Achievements and Performance** This last year has been incredibly challenging for TAT because of the global pandemic, which continues to cause difficulties, not only for the children living on the streets but also the volunteers and TAT workers who have been struggling to make ends meet in a very difficult economic climate. This report will look at two elements of the work TAT was undertaking in Nakuru, and highlight the resilience of TAT as an organisation despite setbacks. ## _**TRANSITION CENTRE**_ Pre-pandemic the transition centre was starting to achieve its goals of self-sustainability, helping more children transition back to their homes, and investment in projects such as solar installation and poultry egg laying. During 2020/2021 TAT was able to reunite the two children who had been living at the centre with their families, and TAT supported them through this very difficult time. The centre also housed one other child temporarily before he returned to his mother. One of the original children did return to the centre to take his exams at school but then returned to the family. In review with FOTAT in the UK and all the workers and volunteers in Kenya it was clear that maintaining the centre was not realistic given the current funds available and the manpower in Kenya. After much discussion and debate it was decided that given the current economic climate in Kenya the centre would close until such time as the team in Kenya could man the centre and give more of their time to the project. This was a very difficult decision for the team and for the FOTAT team in the UK as the transition centre was seen as the perfect medium to help reunite these children with their families. However, all concluded that this closure may just be temporary and that it might be possible to reopen again in the future given a change in the economic climate. ## _**OUTREACH PROGRAMME**_ The weekly sessions held by TAT pre-pandemic were a crucial part of the project when TAT workers could make contact with the children and provide the essential support in terms of education, food and a sense of wellbeing. Having to stop these meetings due to the Covid 19 pandemic was very hard, and TAT workers did everything they could to try and maintain contact with the children wherever they were. ## _**1. Weekly sessions**_ Once the local government gave permission for public gatherings to recommence, TAT was once again able to hold the weekly sessions. TAT workers made every attempt to observe the set regulations by the government in conducting gatherings due to COVID-19 pandemic. General shift of public amenities caused a general change of how the sessions were conducted. When the hospital opened its venue for use during the weekly sessions, TAT had quite a difficult moment reaching out for the boys at their new sites. A few football sessions were held, but the group discussions and lunch were still held weekly. ## _**3. Youth Empowerment**_ In a small way, TAT supported one of the boys that used to come in the sessions start his own small business. This was done by purchasing a jikos (charcoal burner) and pan that he would use to start up a small business of cooking snacks. ## _**NETWORKING**_ TAT continues trying to work with other stakeholders in the sector of child protection, government included. They recognize that TAT can only play our role to a certain extent. TAT has tried bringing children’s department closer to their work through the district children’s office (DCO) and office of social welfare department of the local government. ## **Future Plans** ## **THINK ABOUT THEM PLANS** ## 1. WEEKLY SESSIONS TAT will continue to hold the weekly sessions and try and support as many children as possible to return to their homes or to relatives in their community. For TAT to make a proper use of the funds available, TAT re-evaluated their activities thus putting more emphasis on the weekly sessions by readjusting their activities, and proposed the following ;- - a) Accommodate more children to the sessions as opposed to limiting them to the previous number of participants and ideally have two sessions per week not one. - b) Increase attention to girls living on the streets thus have another female facilitator to help in the process. - c) Reach out to those boys and girls that find it far to reach the sessions site by facilitating their transport. ## 2. NETWORKING TAT will do much on creating and strengthening teamwork with every like minded persons and institutions willing and able to work with them. ## 3. COVID-19 Considerations As and when local government pandemic regulations change - TAT will re-evaluate where to spend their time and resources to have the best effect. ## **FRIENDS OF THINK ABOUT THEM PLANS** FOTAT will continue to support TAT with their weekly sessions and continue to liaise about plans to reopen the transition centre at some time in the future. ## **Reserves** At present the charity holds £1,000 in its reserves in order to cover any situations which may arise. ## **Contributions made by volunteers** Friends of Think About Them are very grateful to the volunteers in Nakuru, Kenya who give up their time to support the children living on the streets, and also volunteers in the UK who support the project financially, and with projects to raise funds. We particularly thank everyone who volunteered their time and resources to fundraising for this project. ## **Structure, Governance and Management** The trustees for Friends of Think About Them are appointed in accordance with the constitution for the charity registered with the Charities Commission in August 2016. The trustees are responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concern and importance to the charity including deciding on how the funds of the charity are to be spent.
