Culture for Heton (Reg. Charity 1168916) Annual Report for AGM 21 March 2023
The object of the Group is to promote good citizenship for the public benefit and advance the Education of the public on the local Heritage and traditions of the area. We successfully achieved this in 2018 with the erection of a Coal Mining related Statue in a prominent position within the village of Hetton.
Before being able to start raising funds we had to set ourselves up as a Charitable organization. In the following years we raised funds, organizing Vintage Teas , Fashion shows, sold Heritage calendars , had an Elvis night with raffles and buffet. We continued to apply for grants and donations from various organizations and individuals.
After the Pandemic our new project was to be the restoration of St Nicholas Graveyard in the centre of Hetton, including the restoration of the Tomb of Nicholas Wood, a listed monument. We sought assurances that the site would not be used for other purposes, before attempting to raise any funds. This led to rather drawn-out discussions with the Parochial Parish Council, Church Commissioners in London and the Durham Diocese, preventing any progress. We have now opened discussions with Hetton Colliery Railway 200, another local charity, to run as a joint project with them and others, in an attempt to make some progress.
When we get some clarity and assurances, we will need to continue to raise funds for this new project and for the insurance and maintenance costs of the Mining Statue.
