Culture for Hetton Annual Statement 2021 Registered Charity Number 1168916

The AGM was publicised and held on the 15[th] of April 2021 as a Zoom video meeting.

The last AGM took place on the 17[th] of March 2020, six days before the government declared a lockdown to combat the Covid 19 Pandemic. Although the lockdown was relaxed for a while in late Summer, it continues to the present day, with a tragic loss of lives. The mass vaccination of the population is well underway, and a relaxation is expected in the near future. The situation has resulted in almost no progress on any of our activities over the last year.

There were some issues around the mining heritage statue which were being addressed but are still to be resolved. Errors and omissions in the lettering are to be discussed with the stonemason and rectified as soon as possible. It was concluded that the issue of additional names on the statue would be both expensive and impractical, alternatives for seating or other additions are unresolved.

It has been decided that our next project will be the Restoration of St Nicholas Graveyard and the Tomb of Nicholas Wood. The graveyard in the centre of Hetton, once the hub of the mining community, is in a sorry state and the tomb of the great engineer Nicholas Wood, a listed monument, is in urgent need of renovation. Consideration is being given to a Memorial and wildlife garden. The site of the old Church in the graveyard is up for sale. Before fundraising is started we need to ensure that there are no future plans to develop the site. Contact with the Durham Diocese and the Parochial Council to resolve this, has been impossible over the period of the pandemic. Crowdfunding was looked at in September and also aborted due to the pandemic.

Expenditure over the period has only been on statue insurance and calendars, with income from gift aid.

We are to have our first face to face meetings in May and hope to get back to business as usual soon.
