## **Annual Report – South Craven Community Library Service Financial Year 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023**

## **Structure of Charity:** 

The Charity was registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation on 15 August 2016. 

## **Purpose of the Charity:** 

Our principal objects as set out in our constitution are as follows: To advance education by the provision of a local lending library The provision of facilities for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social or economic circumstances or for the public at large in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the lives of the said inhabitants. 

## **Social Benefit:** 

We provide a comprehensive range of library services including the loan of books, e- books CDs and audio books. We provide local information, the use of computers, internet and free wifi, a home library service, storytimes for children, reading groups, author events, computer and homework assistance. The family history group suspended due to Covid began again this year. 



## **Issues and Achievements this financial year:** 

Due to the success of the Covid vaccination programme, the Library continued to open throughout the year with normal opening hours. The wearing of masks was no longer compulsory but screens were still in place and hand sanitiser available. 

- New signs giving details of Library opening times were installed on the outside of 

- the building and in the car park. 

- Our Outreach Librarian, Sally Marchant, left during the year and we welcomed 

- Philippa Abbot as her replacement. 

- The Library Volunteer Co-ordinator continues to do a valuable job of emailing all 

- volunteers on a regular basis to keep them informed of library issues. 

- The Wednesday morning 'Story Time' for younger children has continued 

- throughout the year and is much appreciated by those who regularly attend. 

   - Home Library continues though numbers are small. 

   - In May a talk about Yorkshire Dialects was held with about 12 people attending. 

- The Queen's Platinum Jubilee was celebrated in June with the library suitably 

- decorated. One of our Junior Members won a book by Michael Morpurgo, donated by Harper Collins and The Reading Agency. Tea and Cakes were served to over 20 children plus parents and other adults. 

- School visits were welcomed to the Library as well as the Librarian making visits 

- into schools - especially to publicise the Summer Reading Challenge. 

- The Summer Reading Challenge was held with a total of 140 children taking up 

- the challenge and 98 completing. The theme was 'Gadgeteers'. A craft table and Lego was available for children to use throughout the summer. 

- In August a Silk Painting workshop for children was organised with 10 children 

- and parents taking part. 

- The AGM was held in the Library in September 2022 which took the form of a 

- social 'get-together' to thank Library Volunteers. 

- A Slipper Social was held in November where 34 pairs of free slippers were 

- handed out. Free tea and cakes were served and people from 'NY Sport' were available to answer questions about issues affecting older members of the community. 

- At the start of 2023 the Library facilitated several sessions of 'Amazing Babies' to 

- be held on the premises. 

- A Lottery and Raffle Licence was obtained which enabled an Easter Raffle to be 

- successfully held with many prizes being donated. 

- New lighting and emergency lighting was installed at the beginning of 2023 

- which has brightened and enhanced the Library. 

- Compliance Checks were completed at the start of the year including PAT and 

- fixed electrical testing. 

- The update to the Library Lease with NYC was begun in January and due to be 

- completed later in the year. 

- Many themed displays were organised throughout the year highlighting topics 

- such as, Local History / Jubilee / Pride / Banned Books / Green Issues / Mental Health. - There were book sales of new and used books throughout the year. 

## **Volunteers** 

- Present number of volunteers is 35 - 2 of which are young volunteers and 2 who help to keep the Library clean. All volunteers undertake an induction programme.
