EQUALITIES WORK

Trustees’ Report

The Directors present their report and accounts for the year ended 31 August 2023

Organisation

Equalities Work is registered as charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) number 1168738. The object of the CIO is the promotion of equality and diversity for the public benefit by:

(A) Advancing education and raising awareness of equality and diversity.

(B) Promoting activities to foster understanding between people from diverse backgrounds.

Principal Activities

Equalities Work has been established to make the most of the opportunities presented by the creation of the Foundry in Vauxhall, south London. This has brought together some of London’s most progressive human rights and social justice organisations under one roof. A key objective is to engage the public with education and arts focused projects as well as talks, film nights and a range of other events. We do this by working closely with campaigning, advocacy, education, advice and arts organisations.

Over the year, Equalities Work took forward innovative projects including Rights, Camera, Action! This visual arts project engages young people in Lambeth about human rights issues and provides routes into the creative sector. The *In the Mix’ project includes workshops designed to promote access and participation to the visual arts for disabled people living in south London. It combines sessions with professional artists, mentoring and seminars. Equalities Work also received funding under Resource for London’s Enhance capacity building project enabling us to support local voluntary groups with fundraising and business planning.

Our exhibitions programme over the year included New Union Flag, a collaboration with Gil MualemDoron re-imagining the Union Jack by celebrating the communities that have contributed to the UK’s cultural legacy. Another exhibition by Michelle Baharier, How Do I Make You Feel explored the activism and prejudices experienced by disabled people alongside portraits of human rights activists. All of our exhibitions include workshops and events engaging schools and the general public to discuss the issues raised.

Our work is supported by a core grant from the Social Justice and Human Rights Centre and grants from trusts including the City Bridge Foundation.
