Report for SHAL year ending 31.03.25

Another exciting and busy year for SHAL with over 60 members now and an increasing reputation for the local archaeology we are carrying out, as well as the range of speakers at our monthly meetings.

Mike has reported on many of the highlights of the year but I have to add the Christmas Dinner at the Castle which was not only a splendid meal, but a chance for lots of chat and catch up.

The January meeting too, when many of our members contributed their memories of the 50s and 60s in Lympne, informative and amusing. Next time perhaps we will remember the year 2000 when there were lots of happenings and events. Only 25 years ago not really ancient history, but significant!

This I think is what SHAL is about, not a dull academic group, but a lively and exciting delve into the past, both ancient and more recent. We have to thank the members of the Committee for their hard work, brilliant ideas and ability to eat biscuits. In particular Guy and Fiona and their team of diggers and pot washers. Organising a dig on this scale is complicated and time consuming, so many thanks to them both. We also have to thank the generous donors who have contributed funds both for the dig but also for the post dig analysis and preparation of the report.

This is still in the preparation stage, and we are rather sad that Richard Taylor, General Manager of the Kent Archaeological Society, who has been a stalwart supporter and director of our excavations, has recently resigned and is moving to France. He has promised though to leave the report in good hands at the KAS, and we hope he will visit in the summer to steer the project forward.

And of course our great thanks to you the Members for your support and enthusiasm.

SHAL has come a long way since its inception and I have every confidence that it will continue to inform and enthuse its members with the History and Archaeology of Lympne.
