## **Introduction** 

One Ummah Charity is an award-winning, humanitarian and disaster relief aid organisation based in the UK. We currently provide and facilitate aid across 16 calamity-stricken countries worldwide. We aim to alleviate suffering, and ultimately, save the lives of our brothers and sisters across the world. 

Not only do we aim to provide immediate relief to those in need; we also focus on empowerment projects that give beneficiaries the opportunity to transform theirs and their families lives for the better. 

With our assistance, beneficiaries are given the skills and tools to craft a better life, away from the misery of poverty. 

After eight years of life-saving work, we have expanded greatly, with the recruitment of volunteers, employment of staff, and establishing offices across

the UK and abroad. All thanks to the blessings of the Almighty Allah. 

Without the mercy of Allah first and foremost, and then the generosity of our amazing donors, we would not be in a position where we are able to benefit millions around the world every year.

## **Objects, Structure, Governance and Management** 

## **Our legal objects** 

One Ummah Charity is an international humanitarian aid and development organisation. 

In its previous incarnation, One Ummah Charity was established in 2013, and registered on 20th December 2013. It was governed by a constitution as an unincorporated association. 

The charity was incorporated into a new Charitable Incorporated Organisation (‘the new CIO’). The assets and liabilities belonging to the charity were transferred to the new CIO (effective from 2nd August 2016) and the charity formerly known as “One Ummah” was renamed “One Ummah Charity. The charity ceased to operate from 31st December 2016 and was subsequently removed from the Register of Charities (‘the Register’). Since its registration, the new CIO has been known as “One Ummah Charity” (1168565). 

The Constitution defines One Ummah Charity’s objects as being: 

a) The objects of the CIO are to assist in the prevention or relief of poverty anywhere around the world by providing grants, items, and services to individuals in need and or charities, or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty. 

- b) The advancement of the Islamic religion for the benefit of the public in areas of poverty and hardship. 

- c) To advance education by the provision of financial or other assistance, for the benefit of the public in areas of poverty and hardship. 

## **Trustees and organisational structure** 

The Board of Trustees (herein also called “Trustees” or “The Trustees”) direct and oversee One Ummah Charity in accordance with its statutory obligations and policies. Focusing on strategic planning and governance, the Board also sets out strategic priorities and objectives, with the goal of alleviating poverty and its underlying causes. 

The Board of Trustees appraises the performance of the Senior Management Team (SMT) against both strategic and operational objectives through reports, meetings and other interventions as required. The Trustees also approve new policies and procedures. 

When new trustees are appointed, they are given a formal induction to the work of One Ummah Charity and provided with the information they need to fulfil their roles, which includes information about the role of trustees and charity law. New trustees are nominated by members of the Board of Trustees, interviewed by a panel of three Trustees and appointed where they have the necessary skills to contribute to One Ummah Charity management and development. 

## **Chief Executive Officer** 

The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the day-to-day operation of One Ummah Charity including staff management on behalf of the Trustees. 

The Senior Management Team (SMT) headed by the Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the implementation of the strategic and operational plan and the day-to-day management of One Ummah Charity. 

d) To advance health by the provision of financial or other assistance, including medicines, hospitals, and other means, in each case for the public benefit anywhere in the world

## **Risk management** 

All significant activities undertaken are subject to a risk assessment as part of the initial activity evaluation and implementation. Major risks are identified and ranked in terms of their potential impact and likelihood of occurring. 

Major risks, for this purpose, are those that may have a significant effect on: 

- Operational performance, including risks to 

- our personnel and volunteers. 

- Financial sustainability, including stability 

- and security of income. 

- Achievement of our aims and objectives; or 

- Meeting the expectations of our beneficiaries 

- or supporters 

The Trustees review these risks on an ongoing basis to satisfy themselves that adequate systems and procedures are in place to manage the risks identified. Where appropriate, risks are covered by insurance. 

The following framework is central to ensuring adequate risk assurance: 

- Regular monitoring of major risks and development 

- of action plans. 

- Embedding risk identification and assessment within 

- operating procedures. 

## **100% Donation Policy** 

One Ummah Charity operates a 100% donation policy. This means that every penny received by us is spent on the specified cause - with no deductions taken for administration, such as overheads and advertising. This does not include online transaction charges by third party payment gateways that are deducted before a donation is received by us. 

For example, if we receive £30 towards a food pack, then the entire £30 donation will go towards the food pack and in ensuring it reaches the beneficiary. Our donors can be assured that One Ummah Charity exercises diligence in how funds are handled and spent in accordance with how they are donated. 

One Ummah Charity raises funds for the administration costs of One Ummah Charity in the following ways: 

Admin Fund: A specific fund where donations can be made directly towards the administration costs. 

Gift Aid: Any gift aid claimed on donations will be used for the administration costs. 

Textile Recycling: One Ummah Charity operates clothing banks where textiles are collected and sold to exporters to generate income. 

Sponsors and Donations: Business sponsorships are sought for brand awareness on our website, digital and social media platforms. 

- A clear structure of delegated authority and control. 

- Review of key systems and procedures through 

- internal audit arrangements. 

- Income and profit targets for our trading 

- and fundraising activities. 

- Maintaining reserves in line with set policies; and 

- Regular summary reports on risk management to 

- the Board of Trustees.

## **Reporting public benefit** 

The Trustees confirm that they have read the Commission’s Guidance on Public Benefit (including PB1, PB2, PB3).  One Ummah Charity is compliant with the public benefit requirement under the Charities Act 2011.  Our work only involves activities that advance our charitable objects and benefit the public. This can be seen in the many humanitarian activities highlighted in this report such as emergency aid or education support, which benefits the public by saving lives, and reducing poverty among populations in need. 

## **Reserve Policy** 

One Ummah Charity has a policy that sets the level of general reserves such that it meets our operating expenses in the event of a sudden drop in income or the incurring of unexpected expenditure. This policy is regularly reviewed, assessing risks and reflecting on changes in factors such as income and also our financial obligations and commitments. Such a review was undertaken in 2021, and the current target level of reserves of six months’ of the core operational budget was deemed to be sufficient at the time. These funds are held in current and medium-term cash forms. 

## **Trustees’ responsibilities in relation to the financial statements** 

The Trustees are responsible for preparing an Annual Report and financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards including Financial Reporting Standard 102: The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). 

The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of One Ummah Charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of One Ummah Charity for that period. 

In preparing these financial statements, the Trustees are required to: 

- Select suitable accounting policies and apply 

- them consistently. 

- Observe the methods and principles in the 

- Charities SORP. 

- Make judgements and estimates that are 

- reasonable and prudent. 

- State whether applicable accounting standards have 

- been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements, and 

- Prepare the financial statements on a going concern 

- basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation. 

The Trustees are responsible for keeping sufficient accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of One Ummah Charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of One UmmahCharity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. The Trustees are responsible for the maintenance and integrity of the corporate and financial information included on One Ummah Charity’s website. Legislation in the United Kingdom governing the preparation and dissemination of financial statements may differ from legislation in other jurisdictions.

## **Message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees** 

## _Assalamu’alaikum Wa-rahmatullah_ Peace be upon you all 

It is my pleasure to introduce our annual report for 2020. 

I would first like to thank all our donors. Without your donations, we would never be able to carry out the important work which has saved so many lives around the world and has helped ease the pain of those families affected. 

**For One Ummah Charity, it has been a huge year with Covid-19 causing heartbreak around the world.** Despite the pandemic causing many issues, our team stepped up in making sure all our appeals kept going in countries like Yemen, Syria, Gaza, Uganda, Pakistan, India, Somalia and many more. 

One Ummah Charity has grown rapidly which has helped us carry out campaigns such as emergency disaster appeals, food distribution programs, orphan sponsorship, water projects, lifesaving winter aid distribution, education, medical plus more. Due to our rapid growth, we’ve recruited some key new staff members to ensure our charity operations continue with efficiency. 

## **As a board we continue to strategize to** 

I would like to pay tribute to our staff who have dedicated many hours to ensure One Ummah Charity activities run smoothly and have also been at the forefront in delivering vital lifesaving aid. 

It was a difficult year due to restrictions. Nevertheless,  our volunteers continued to fundraise and get communities involved raising huge amounts of money. **I’d like to thank all of our volunteers who are the core of our communities.**

## **Message from the Chief Executive Officer** 

## _Bismillah as-salaatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasool-Allah,_ 

All praise and thanks are to Allah, the most generous, the most merciful, in whose hands lies the success of One Ummah Charity. Through His will, we are able to support those in need around the world. 

It is my pleasure to present to you the One Ummah Charity 2020/2021 annual report. During the past year, we have seen suffering and destitution around the world increase manyfold. From natural disasters, on-going conflicts and, the global Covid-19 pandemic, to name a few we at One Ummah Charity have risen to the occasion and actively responded to numerous crises across the globe. Through the course of the year, One Ummah Charity has grasped opportunities to increase its global footprint and has expanded into over 16 countries, while offering a wider variety of programmes. 

Programmes have included global food aid, water and sanitation, hygiene kits, winter packs, masajid, orphan sponsorships, Zakat and much more. Beyond the multitude of programmes we offer and with the permission of Allah, **we have been able to deliver aid in some of the most notoriously hard to reach areas around the world such as Yemen, Gaza, Lebanon and Syria.** One Ummah Charity has strived to make a concerted impact in these countries and regions which specifically which have been most affected by conflict, drought, and sudden poverty. In addition, One Ummah Charity has also increased its efforts in the African peninsula with particular emphasis on expanding its construction of water wells and mosques initiatives. 

Despite the many challenges facing charities, the exponential growth One Ummah Charity has experienced this year has been nothing short of extraordinary. We have significantly increased our income and expenditure which ultimately allows us to help more beneficiaries. 

To cater for this growth, the One Ummah Charity team has expanded its capacity across all departments and has brought together key individuals with decades of experience to ensure we continue to manage and sustain the rapid growth One Ummah Charity is experiencing. 

Finally, as the beloved Prophet n said: _**“He who does not thank the people is not thankful to Allah.”**_ [Abu Dawud]. Therefore, it is incumbent on One Ummah Charity to recognise that without the donors, sponsors, partners, those that offered kind words, advice, and valuable feedback, we would not have been able to benefit so many people around the world. **One Ummah Charity is eternally indebted to you for your generosity and involvement with making One Ummah Charity what it is today and being instrumental in its growth.** 

We cannot supplicate enough for you as One Ummah Charity. However, we are certain that millions around the world who benefit each year from your contributions are also making sincere du’a for you. Yusuf is a humanitarian aid worker and da’ee and has travelled around the world with One Ummah since 2018 delivering emergency aid to thousands of people including the Rohingya in Bangladesh and the Syrians in Turkey and Lebanon.

Yusha is a famous da’ee calling people to Islam. He is one of One Ummah’s supporters and has travelled from the USA to the UK a number of times to fundraise for One Ummah’s life-saving campaigns.

AbdurRaheem McCarthy is a very well known da’ee and Islamic speaker. He 

has toured the UK with One Ummah delivering beneficial reminders to Muslim communities and helping to support One Ummah’s fundraising activities worldwide. He has also travelled to Uganda and the Uyghers providing aid.

## SYRIA **10 YEARS OF PAIN** 

After almost 10 years of hardship, suffering and persecution, millions of people in Syria and on the border of Syria rely solely on humanitarian aid to survive. 

The One Ummah Charity team are working tirelessly on the ground to save as many lives as possible in this difficult situation. 

The situation in Syria is dire. People are struggling for food, water, shelter, medication and blankets whilst the death toll is rising every single day. 

One Ummah Charity have been on the ground for over 8 years both within Syria where 13.1 million people are in need of aid and at the borders where a further 3 million Syrians are residing having fled from suffering, torture and persecution. 

Through the support of our generous donors we hope to continue to aid those in Syria providing ease to their many hardships insha’Allah.

## **THE CONFLICT CONTINUES** 

exports, as well as the movement of people in and out of Gaza, and access to agricultural land and fishing waters. Gazans are unable to provide for their families and the quality of infrastructure and vital services has deteriorated. 

More than 2 million people are crammed into Gaza, one of the most densely populated cities on earth. The majority live below the poverty line and rely on your donations to survive. The One Ummah Charity team are working tirelessly on the ground to save as many lives as possible in Gaza. 

Despite measures taken to ease the blockade in June 2010, the humanitarian situation remains extremely fragile. While imports have increased, they are still at less than 40% of the pre-2007 levels. Exports remain tightly restricted and are limited to agricultural produce to Europe, and Gazan businesses cannot access their traditional markets in Israel and the West Bank. Access to land and sea remains highly restricted. 

The Gaza blockade (through the land, air and sea) is a denial of basic human rights in contravention of international law and amounts to collective punishment. It severely restricts imports and

## YEMEN **ON THE BRINK OF FAMINE** 

The One Ummah Charity team are working tirelessly **on the ground** to save as many lives as possible in dozens of areas across war-torn Yemen. 

**Yemen remains the world’s largest humanitarian crisis and aid operation.** The crisis is the result of a brutal armed conflict that escalated six years ago. It has killed and injured tens of thousands of civilians and caused immense suffering to the Yemeni people. 

Without life-saving aid in the coming months, **thousands of lives are at risk** due to the ongoing violence and lack of access to food and medicine. 

The challenge of relieving the many orphaned children, displaced families, and widows from their hardship remains monumental.

## ROHINGYA **1 MILLION REFUGEES** 

More than 1 million Rohingya Muslims have escaped persecution, torture, rape and killing in Myanmar. The brutal crackdown on Muslims sadly took the lives of thousands and left many with no choice but to cross the border with only the clothes on their back.

## LEBANON 

After the Beirut disaster, Lebanon has not been the same again. For nearly 18 months now, Lebanon has been assailed by a compounded crisis, specifically an economic and financial crisis followed by COVID-19 and lastly by the explosion at the port of Beirut in August 2020. 

One Ummah Charity have been on the ground for 4 years and have been **assisting the Syrian refugees alongside the Palestinian refugees there.** Many UK teams have travelled to Lebanon to distribute aid to beneficiaries - Syrian, Palestinian and Lebanese.

## UGANDA 

The refugees currently in Uganda come from eight countries in Africa including South Sudan, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Rwanda, Eritrea, Sudan and Ethiopia. 

Each of these countries has experienced a civil war in the past 30 years and most have suffered one in the past two decades. That being said, many of the individuals who experienced those trying times are still alive. When new violence occurs, many decide to leave earlier versus later because they remember the atrocities from just 20 to 30 years prior. 

**One Ummah Charity continued to support the people of Uganda** through water wells, masjids, Zakat, Qurbani, orphan sponsorship, medical aid, and emergency food aid. Through the unwavering support of One Ummah Charity’s donors, we have provided aid to approximately 114,860 beneficiaries, Alhamdulillah.

## FEEDING THE NEEDY 

Food is a basic human right that no individual should be deprived of. The sad reality is that we live in a world where many have no access to food or water. However, we can go a long way in reducing world hunger. 

Every Ramadan, millions of men, women, and children around the world go hungry and are unable to fast, simply because they cannot afford to eat. **One Ummah Charity organises community iftars for hundreds of thousands of people across several countries.**

## **THE THIRD PILLAR** 

**Zakah is 2.5% of a Muslim’s income and savings after they have taken care of their families. It is an obligation like the five daily prayers, and is not a voluntary act of worship.** 

_**“And establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves – you will find it with Allah.”**_ [2:110] 

During a year filled with all manner of tribulations, **One Ummah Charity was on the ground** distributing your Zakat to the neediest of people. 

**Your Zakah donations were used across 16 calamity-stricken countries** to provide those who are eligible with life-saving food, monetary contributions and emergency aid. 

For many thousands of destitute families in need, your Zakah contributions have been the answer

Orphans need a safe place to grow. Caring for the children and cherishing them with the basics like clean clothes, food, shelter and education. These factors increase the likelihood of them becoming a positive member of their community and enables them choose a positive career path.

Parents are the backbone of many families, and the ones children turn to throughout their life. What about the millions of children around the world without parents and the 124 million who can’t afford an adequate education? 

The Prophet Muhammad n said: _**“The best gift a father can provide for their child is an education.”**_ **(Tirmidhi)** 

One Ummah Charity have been **working in 16 crisis-hit Muslim countries** including Pakistan, Somalia and Gaza and with the people of Syria to provide them with food, medicine, water and most importantly, education.

We have audited the financial statements of One Ummah Charity for the year ended 31 March 2021 on ‘pages 42 to 49. The financial reporting framework that has been applied in their preparation is applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted  Accounting Practice applicable to Smaller Entities). 

This report is made solely to the charity’s trustees, as a body, in accordance with Chapter 3 of Part 16 of the Companies Act 2006. Our audit work has been undertaken so that we might state to the charity’s trustees those matters we are required to state to them in an auditor’s report and forno other purpose.  To the fullest extent permitted by law, we do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charity and the charity’s trustees as a body, for our audit work, for this report, or for the opinions we have formed. 

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and auditors** 

As explained more fully in the Statement of Trustees Responsibilities set out on page 6, the trustees are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements and for being satisfied that they give a true and fair view. They are also responsible for assessing the charity’s ability to continue as a going concern. 

Our responsibility is to audit and express an opinion on the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and International Standards on Auditing (UK and Ireland).  Those standards require us to comply with the Auditing Practices Board’s Ethical Standards for Auditors. 

## **Scope of the audit of the financial statements** 

An audit involves obtaining evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements sufficient to give reasonable assurance that the financial statements are free from material misstatement, whether caused by fraud or error.  This includes an assessment of: whether the accounting policies are appropriate to the charity’s circumstances and have been consistently applied and adequately disclosed; the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by the trustees;  and the overall presentation of the financial statements.  In addition we read all the financial and  non-financial information in the Trustees Report to identify material inconsistencies with the audited financial statements.  If we become aware of any apparent material misstatements or inconsistencies we consider the implications for our report.

## **1 Accounting policies** 

## **Basis of accounting** 

The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) ‘Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015)’, Financial Reporting Standard 102 ‘ The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland’ and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention. 

## **Turnover** 

Turnover represents all income to the charity, the majority of which is donations but also from the sale of works. 

## **Incoming resources** 

All incoming resources are included on the Statement of Financial Activities when the charity is legally entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy. 

## **Gift aid** 

## Gift aid is recognised  in the accounts when it is received by the charity. 

## **Resources expended** 

Expenditure is accounted for on an accrual basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category.  Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. 

## **Tangible fixed assets** 

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life: Motor vehicles 25% p.a on reducing balance Fixtures and fittings 25% p.a on reducing balance 

## **Intangible fixed assets** 

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life: Lease premium Over 7 years on straight line basis 

## **Taxation** 

The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities. 

## **Fund accounting** 

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees. Restricted funds can be only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity.  Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes. Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

## 100% Donation Policy 


One Ummah Charity operates a strict 100% donation policy meaning all of your funds will be used to help the needy. 

We take the trusts of people very seriously and guarantee that every penny we receive from you is spent supporting the cause or project you have donated to. Meaning, if you donated for a water well, your money will only be spent on the delivery, construction, labour, contractors and materials required to build that well. Not a single penny will go towards administration, marketing or generating further funds, Alhamdulillah.

## Volunteering With One Ummah Charity 

Here at One Ummah Charity, we are always looking for special individuals who are passionate about helping those around the world who are less fortunate. We owe our successes to our amazing volunteers who have been so active throughout the years in helping to raise millions of pounds for worldwide projects that have saved countless lives. 

Our volunteers have been active in cake baking campaigns, homeless soup kitchens, charity challenges, organising and running inspiring talks and lectures, bazaars, charity fun days, eids in the park and many more activities.
