Report of the Friends of Albury Old Saxon Church for the period 1 May 2021 to 30 April 2022

Registration and Trustees

The Charity was registered under the above name on 2 August 2016. The registration number is 1168550. Its principal address is Fellgarth, Shophouse Lane, Albury Guildford GU5 9EQ.

The trustees at the end of the year 2020/21 were

Mr Michael Charles George Baxter Mrs Monica Cassels Mrs Daphne Mary Foulsham Mrs Sally Godfrey (Hon. Secretary) Mrs Charlotte Gummer Mr Christopher John Hammond Mrs Stephanie Harley Mr Roy Hogben The Revd. Andrew Michael Pearson (Chairman)

Although not themselves trustees, the above were assisted by Mrs Linda Floyd as Hon. Treasurer, and Mrs Betty Adams and Mrs Sarah (Sally) Stevens helping coordinate events and activities.

Objectives

The objectives of the Charity are:

A) For the benefit of the public to maintain, repair, restore, preserve, improve and enhance the fabric of the old church of St Peter and St Paul, Albury, in the county of Surrey, England, its monuments, fixtures, fittings, furniture, stained glass, ornaments and other chattels and its churchyard.

B) To advance the education of the public in the heritage of the church and the local area by providing information on its history and architecture.

Structure

We are a Charitable Incorporated Organisation governed by a Foundation Constitution. The only members are the Trustees. The Trustees meet as required to consider fundraising and activities, and to determine direction. The activities of the Charity are modest enough not to need a complex management structure, but the Trustees will make use of sub-committees (which may include non-members) as required for specific purposes.

1

The Trustees seek to ensure that they are sufficient in number and have the range of skills needed for adequate management and pursuit of objectives. New Trustees (up to the permitted maximum number of twelve), when required, are appointed by the existing Trustees from local people with a strong interest in Albury’s Old Church and the objectives of the ‘Friends’.

In addition to the Trustees, there are a number of supporters of the charity who are not members of it but are often loosely referred to as the ‘Friends’. They pay an annual subscription, or make a once-off payment for ‘life membership’ or ‘Benefactor’ status. In return they receive a periodic newsletter, are invited to an annual garden tea (not held in 2020 owing to the pandemic), and receive details of matters and events affecting the Old Church.

Activities in the year 1 May 2021 to 30 April 2022 (the Charity’s sixth reporting period)

In planning our activities the Trustees have given careful consideration to the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance.

This reporting period covers the period of easing of Covid restrictions, and there was a gradual resumption of normal activities. The church was open to visitors when restrictions allowed.

The Charity received £18,062 in subscriptions and donations in the year to 30 April 2022, including £13,690 donated specifically towards the next phase of the Drummond Chapel. It passed £1,276 (net) to the Churches Conservation Trust, the owners and managers of the building, for its general upkeep, principally money collected for the CCT through the wall safe and from collections at events and services, having deducted £1,517 for expenses incurred on the CCT’s behalf. After expenditure there was an overall surplus for the year of £14,361.

An electricity cable was laid just under the surface of the churchyard from the boundary, making connection inside the church more convenient.

A socially distanced service took place at Midsummer 2021, and the annual Christmas carol service took place outside the churchyard wall with a good, but lower than usual, attendance. The Good Friday 2022 service was moved to the current parish church in order to leave the Old Church free for a filming booking, but filming was in the event cancelled.

Once again there was liaison with the CCT over the use of the church for filming, concerts, and theatre productions on various occasions.

A tea for supporters was held on 25 July 2021 at the home of one of the Trustees.

The Friends staffed the church for Heritage Weekend in September 2021, observing Covid precautions.

During the year members of the committee investigated the provision of a contactless terminal for card donations. These investigations were ongoing at the year end.

2

The Trustees continued preparatory work on an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund to support the appeal for conservation and possible restoration of the Drummond Chapel.

The discussions with Guildford Borough Council over responsibility for maintenance of the closed churchyard ended in February 2022 with the Council confirming that the maintenance liability had not been, and could not now be, transferred to them under section 215 of the Local Government Act 1972. They would however continue a contribution to costs by way of discretionary grant for the present.

Throughout the year the Charity has cleaned inside the building, carried out minor works of upkeep in liaison with the CCT, and fielded enquiries.

The Trustees are satisfied that so far as possible in another unusual part-year, the Charity has kept the Old Saxon Church in the public eye, encouraged the donation of funds for its upkeep and repair, and carried out such activities as were possible to keep it tidy, attractive, and in good order, and to improve local and wider knowledge of this heritage building.

Financial Review

A full financial statement accompanies this report. Funds are either passed to the CCT for the maintenance of the building or kept pro tem against known future requirements, the main example of which at present is the gathering of funds to continue the work on the Drummond Chapel. The Charity currently has no need to hold unallocated reserves, beyond small amounts necessary for minor disbursements. It would need to review this approach if it became responsible for significant contracts.

The Charity holds no funds as custodian trustee.
