## **TRUSTEES’ REPORT**

The trustees present their first report along with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31[st ] July 2023. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out on page 15 and comply with the charity’s constitution and applicable law.

## **TRUSTEES**

The trustee’s names on page 2 have served throughout the year. Appointment of trustees is governed by the Constitution of the CIO. The Board of Trustees is authorised to appoint new trustees to fill vacancies arising through resignation or death of an existing trustee.

## **AIMS AND OBJECTS**

Juvenis is a youth development organisation. The charity exists to act as a resource hub for children and young people across London, aged 10-25. Operating from its principal location in the heart of Brixton, South London, the charity provides advice, assistance, mentoring, recreational and educational activities for public benefit.

The object of the charity is to help young people, especially but not exclusively through leisure time activities, to develop their capabilities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society.

In developing strategies, setting objectives, and undertaking activities, the trustees have given careful consideration to the Charity Commissions general guidance on public benefit, and continue to achieve its object through the Education and Poverty programmes that facilitate:

1. A youth resource hub that provides individualised face to face support for young people, so that they are better able to address and tackle barriers that are facing them, such as, housing, financial problems/debt and family problems.

2. Through our main programmes,

**Positive Change** , offers a range of bespoke educational outreaches that help young people develop their skills and capabilities, and is designed and delivered with the aim of them being able to participate in society as independent, mature, and responsible individuals.

**DIVERT Youth** , is a Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) intervention programme aimed to reduce reoffending. It is delivered in via police custody suites by Juvenis and Lambeth Council and aims to DIVERT young people away from crime.

**Vanguard** , aims to provide meaningful support for children, young people and families who have complex and unmet needs, and who are at risk of /or are affected by violence and exploitation.

Activities include:

- Partnering with other youth organisations to recruit and train young people to organise activities at local youth clubs.

JUVENIS TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT TRUSTEES’ REVIEW YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2023

## **PUBLIC BENEFIT**

The trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the Foundation should undertake.

## **RESERVES POLICY**

The Trustees have considered the level of reserves they wish to retain appropriate to the charity’s needs. This is based on the charity’s size and the level of commitments held. The Trustees aim to ensure the charity will be able to continue to fulfil their charitable objectives.

## **RISK REVIEW**

The trustees conduct periodic reviews of the major risks to which the charity is exposed and systems and procedures to manage those risks identified are implemented so as to minimise any potential impact on the charity should any of those risks materialise.

## **STATEMENT OF TRUSTEES’ RESPONSIBILITIES**

Law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the charity’s financial activities during the year and of its financial position at the end of the year. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:

- a) select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;

- b) make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

- c) state whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;

- d) Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation.

The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

## **DISCLOSURE OF INFORMATION TO INDEPENDENT EXAMINERS**

Each of the trustees have confirmed that there is no information of which they are aware of which is relevant to the independent financial examination, but of which the Independent Examiners are unaware. They have further confirmed that they have taken appropriate steps to identify such relevant information and to establish that the independent examiners are aware of such information.

JUVENIS TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT EXAMINERS REPORT YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2023

## **Independent Examiners Report**

I report on the accounts of the charity for the period ended 31[st] July 2023 which are set out on pages 9 to 15..

## **Responsibility of Examiner**

The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:

- Examine accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act

- follow all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act; and

- state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner's report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the company and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

   1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the trustees have not met the requirements to ensure that:

      - a. proper accounting records are kept; and

      - b. accounts are prepared which agree with the accounting records. Or

2. the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

Our impact report sets out the positive changes we’ve made to the lives of vulnerable young people and their families in Lambeth.

## **We supported over 350 vulnerable children, young people and their families this year mainly in Lambeth.**

In this year’s impact report, we have focussed on the evaluation of our work on our main projects: Lambeth Vanguard, DIVERT Youth and Nottingham University.

work, I am encouraged that we are consistently delivering positive outcomes even during a global pandemic.

Many of our projects work with young people who are experiencing some of the most complex problems we see in our communities; despite the challenges of this

I hope you enjoy learning about our work helping hundreds of children, young people and their families, and we look forward to doing better work in the future.

## **DIVERT Youth**

## **Lambeth Vanguard**

This programme has continued working with young people aged 10-17 who also presented in police custody. Founded on the same principles as the DIVERT model, this programme provides tailored intervention and support for young people at risk of negative outcomes associated with the youth justice system.

We has continued to intervention via Partisan to young people and their families and worked more closely with Impact for Urban Health and Global Fund for Children to bring in a consultant/advisor to enable us to make this therapeutic service part of our core offer going forward next year.

This is a new scope of work for us with Lambeth Council and the South East London Vanguard Clinical Team, commissioning Juvenis to work more closely in the community with young people affected by exploitation and violence. Supporting young people and their families to improve their emotional well-being, increase access to education, employment and training, increase stability, and essentially help them to divert away from the criminal justice system. This service is based on a principle of practice which underpins our work and consists of working in partnerships, building services for and within the community and working together to create opportunities for change.

## **Youth Voice - University of Nottingham**

Good youth voice practice means that, as a young person, you feel like your views and opinions are genuinely considered and you are able to make a difference. It's really important that young people feel that the time and effort they give is valued and worthwhile. This collaborative research with Nottingham University has allowed us to work with young people across Lambeth to improve the experience of children and young people when dealt with by the police as a suspect, particularly when held in police custody. Also within scope of the research, the young people developed digital resources to provide child-friendly information to young suspects about the criminal process and their legal rights.

## **Case Study**

tioner Ebinehita Iyere she was misusing drugs and life at home with her mum had become increasingly difficult. Despite her academic talents, she found herself targeted by her head teacher during her final year at secondary school. Here, Blue and Ebinehita explain the journey they’ve been on together since Blue was first referred to Divert Youth, and the brighter future she now has in her grasp.

## BLUE

Two years ago I had a friend who used to chill with older people in our school. One morning she asked if I wanted to come to the block with her, so we met this older girl, and she was smoking weed. The first time I was like, I’m not going to smoke, but the second time I did. I thought, this is bad, and after that I stopped – but then lockdown happened. That’s when the addiction started. It got really bad

protractor case. Next day, I went into my maths class and opened it. Suddenly everyone’s like “It smells like weed!” The teacher found it and I got excluded and referred to the Divert Youth programme. They told me either I get a caution or I join the programme. It wasn’t a difficult choice!

Then one day these two people come to my house – Ebi [Therapeutic Youth Practitioner] and Ian [Family Practitioner]. I wasn’t looking for help, so I sat there and listened because I had to. Ebi and mum had a disagreement about the girls in the programme and my mum responded as though she had the authority, because she was older. But Ebi wasn’t having it, and that stood out to me.

My mum was like, are these girls all Black? And she was like yeah, this is a programme for Black girls. And she was like, I don’t want her doing that because Black girls are like this – and Ebi was like no, Black girls are not like this. My mum seems to dislike her own race, she feels like Black people put each other down.

She was trying to explain why she didn’t want me to hang around with Black girls and Ebi stood up to her. I was like, yo, this might be my girl! How could this young woman talk to my mum like that? She wasn’t rude, she was just smart, and my mum had nothing to say.

She told me she was going to come see me and tell me about what she does. I still wasn’t that interested, but I had to do it, and looking back I think God put her in my path. That’s when I moved onto the Milk Honey Bees project.

Every week a guy came into school to talk to me about why I should stop smoking, but it didn’t really help, and it just kept getting worse. I think he gave me bad advice.

hard to trust people because you’re supposed to be able to talk to your mum about difficult stuff, but if you

talk to her, you’re talking to all her friends. I don’t like that. If I can’t tell my mum stuff, why am I going to talk to other people?

I had to come see Ebi after school on Fridays, because that was when I used to want to hang out with my friends and smoke. She got me doing these things that were new to me, like making this collage with all the milestones of my life on it. We would read poems by Rupi Kaur and talk about what they meant to us. I really touched with some of those pages.

## EBINEHITA

The way I work with young people, for each individual it’s different. I think working with Blue was a process of trust, showing her what trust was and creating a boundary. I knew she liked her Friday evenings – what young person doesn’t – but I knew that the Friday session would mean Saturday and Sunday would be easier for her to manage.

From when I met her, I knew this girl’s not just going to sit there and talk to me. I knew I had to make sure she could creatively express herself in the way that she wanted to. It’s taken time, but we’ve got there.

sessions, from expressing yourself to identity. Because she came from a place where her parents projected certain things onto her in terms of race, for Blue it was about understanding who she was as a Black girl through the exercises we use at Milk Honey Bees.

There would be days where she’d come in, I’d take one look at her, scrap the session completely and we’d just play Uno. The creative expression part is whatever it needs to be for the young person at that time.

they told me about self-care I was like, what is that? They got me a face mask, a candle, sweets, a bath bomb – it was so cute!

There was this project Ebi wanted me to apply for, the Black Girl Global Justice Initiative. At first, I wasn’t really interested – but she encouraged me, because it was about things she knew I was interested in. Then I saw how much the other girls wanted to join, so I realised it must be something good!

You had to write paragraphs and paragraphs. There were quotes from Audrey Lorde and Malcolm X and you had to write about what they made you feel and what they meant. I’m quite good at analysing, so I had a go at that, and I got into the programme.

I’m good in school – I just have a bit of attitude. I like to express my opinions and I like to challenge people. I was in the school debate club! I didn’t have problems academically or with other students, but in Year 11 I had trouble with my head teacher. He had an idea stuck in his head that I was a bad kid.

## EBINEHITA

So we’re on a journey at this point. Things are going well, she’s getting more involved, coming here more often. And then there was an incident. An incident with Blue’s dad that left her feeling uncomfortable and uneasy. I’d call it sexual harassment. As a professional, it left me feeling uncomfortable also. We’d gotten to a great place – and then this happens. It took us back a bit.

I think what Blue needed then was someone who wasn’t going to judge her. She didn’t want to talk about it at first, which is understandable, but slowly she started to open up.

## BLUE

I would come in and Ebi would greet me nicely. Mum would never do that when I came in the house, there was no hi or nothing. It just felt so normal to be in this office.

I came upstairs for one of my sessions and Ebi and one of the other girls in the programme had made a care pack for me, because in our previous sessions, when

Processing the incident wasn’t easy, but we worked through it using creative expression. I was very proud of her because when dad tried to communicate with her, she would always tell me. And I think what helped was that she hadn’t just built trust with me, but also with some of the other girls here. You could see she was starting to gain a sense of independence – and a sense of responsibility.

In January we celebrated Blue turning 16. Things were looking up again. But then something big happened.

## BLUE

her a letter explaining why, because it wasn’t healthy there. I moved out on the Saturday and went to live with my boyfriend and his mum.

was busting out of prison. I felt like I was ready. And she’d always told me she wanted me to leave when I was 16 anyway.

I stayed there for a month and every day I had to go see Ebi to check I was ok. That check was good – it gave me a familiar face at a time when so much was unfamiliar. I had a few problems with the mum so then I moved to my sister’s. But I couldn’t stay there long because it’s a tiny studio and she was living with her son. I felt like a burden to everyone, like I was just getting passed around.

## EBINEHITA

ence of supporting a girl through housing – and as somebody who went through this experience themselves. This child needed housing and we were dealing with a system that was bigger than both of us.

It was intense because changes in the system meant she couldn’t be independently placed –but at the same time finding foster placement for 16-year-olds isn’t the easiest. So all we could do was wait until a foster placement was provided. But then the breakthrough came.

## BLUE

When I heard about the placement, I called Ebi and even though it was Saturday she got a cab and took me there. It was scary because the cab took so long. I was like, is this even London?

When we got there, it was a nice house, but the lady was small and I always worry people find me intimidating. But when I spoke to her, she was really nice. She made me feel welcome. Then Ebi got me a Five Guys!

I’ve been there a couple of months now, and I feel very comfortable, very safe. The lady there, she really talks to me about stuff and what I need to do. She’s on my side. I want to stay there for as long as I can.

11, and at first I didn’t want to go to sixth form because of my head teacher, but he resigned, so now I’m going to pursue my education. I’ve picked philosophy, psychology and sociology because I want to be a counsellor or a therapist. I’m coming for Ebi’s job!

loads of things at Milk Honey Bees – a book club, and a workshop on Black people’s hair. And I’m a youth consultant now on a project with Citi Foundation, helping them to change the language they use to be more accessible.

The future feels like a new me. An improved me. If I look down at myself when I’m older, when I’m 20 maybe, I’m going to see I’m still this person, but better. I can’t know what would have happened if I hadn’t met Ebi, but I know what it was like before. I did bad stuff, stuff I regret, but I can’t turn back time. I feel like I’m in a better place because with Ebi I have someone to guide me. Also, I have good friends now. They tell me if I’ve done something wrong and I love them so much.

If a young person comes to Divert Youth who maybe doesn’t want to be there, what I’d say to them now is you won’t know until you try it. You’ve probably asked for help somewhere, even just in your prayers, so why are you turning down the offer? Take the help, because you know you need it.

## **Funders/Donations**

We would not have been able to do all we have for young people without our dedicated supporters, the other grassroots organisations who we rely on to work with us to help change children and young people’s lives.

We would like to thank all funders and donors for believing in the work we do; they play a crucial part of everything we have achieved for young people this year. We are very proud of the team behind Juvenis, their hard work keeps the organisation moving in the right direction every year.

Finally, we’d like to thank the children and young

people, it is our privilege to work both with and for.

Their stories of resilience and tenacity continue to inspire me and remind everyone at Juvenis how important it is that we do all that we can to ensure children and young people are given the opportunity for a brighter future.

Our vision is still as important as ever ‘a future where all young Londoners have more than one chance to fulfil their potential’.

Thank you.
