Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 1/4/21 Period start date To 31/3/22 Period end date Charity name: Friends of Castle Cove Charity

Charity registration number: 1168204

Objectives and Activities

Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
For the benefits of the inhabitants of Castle Cove,
Dorset and the local community, to provide or assist in
the provision of facilities for recreation and other leisure
time occupation in the interests of social welfare with
the object of improving their conditions of life for the
inhabitants of the area of benefit.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Our role continues to be that of providing free access to
Castle Cove Beach for thousands of visitors. We are
also including access to the woodlands around, and to
the promotion of greater knowledge as to what is
happening in our marine and coastal environment. We
are no longer campaigning to provide a facility, but
instead we are running that facility and encouraging the
growth of a community around the Cove. Our trustees
continue to carry a large workload, and we will be
recruiting a new trustee in 2023.
Community Outreach
We continue to organise events to pull the community
together. The most successful this year was the Open
Gardens, organised in June, which attracted over 400
visitors including a pottery exhibition in one of the
participating gardens. The Castle Cove Sea Swimmers
continue to be popular, swimming throughout the year,
and we had a Cuttings Exchange in Spring 2021, where
80 people exchanged cuttings and seeds. There
continues to be lively debate on all issues connected
with the beach via our 2,600 supporters on our
Facebook page, and we send newsletters to 100 people
at six-monthly intervals. We also organised a thank-you
event for the volunteers and supporters who have kept
us going for so many years.
Environmental protection
For the first time this year, we ran a Litter Free Beach
campaign, in which we asked people to take their
rubbish home. This has been very successful. We have
encouraged the promotion of no-anchor buoys by the
sailing club to protect eel grass and lobbied Portland
Harbour successfully to implement a no anchor zone to
protect the eel grass just off the coast of Castle Cove
Beach
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
The trustees have undertaken this work with due regard
to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on
public benefit received on a regular basis and
disseminated and discussed when relevant to our
activities.

Achievements and Performance

Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Following the pandemic years this years work has been
very active and appreciated by the local community
Access to the beach
We continue to maintain and operate the stairs free of
charge to the estimated 80,000 people who come to the
beach each year, and are building up a reserve fund for
repairing the steps when that becomes due. We have
been working with Dorset Council and local landowners
to replace the access bridge to the steps, and are in the
process of reopening that stretch of Footpath 125
known as the Underbarn Walk. Discussions have been
slow, as they involve discussions with up to ten sets of
stakeholders. We have applied for the beach to be
registered as a Neigbourhood Green Space, to prevent
further development, and have been in regular
discussions with the people building three houses at the
back of the beach.
