## **ANNUAL RETURN: THE BESOM IN BARNET 01/01/21 - 31/12/21**

In 2021, Besom in Barnet started with the hope that together with a new energy, this would be the year to relaunch the activities. What this year did show us was that the environment in which we were active has changed and the tasks which Besom in Barnet so regularly and tirelessly undertook for so many years have been taken on by others in the meantime. The year was spent meeting, praying, seeking guidance and identifying the way forward for Besom in Barnet.

Dave Farnham stepped down as trustee to focus on volunteering work for another charity following many years of dedicated service but continues to take an active interest in the development of Besom in Barnet. Aaron Khattra-Hall became a trustee.

The core team which is made up of 3 trustees, one former trustee and 2 other core team members has been meeting throughout the year, on average once every couple of months including one meeting with Besom in Haringey.

Besom has a network of similar organisations across England which together have been able to increasingly provide support to groups with a wide range of topics from safe-guarding to identifying the model which may work in any particular area. We have been very grateful to have been supported by a number of highly experienced individuals who were willing to commit time and effort both practically and in prayer support in helping us on our road to relaunching our activities.

We have had pictures shared of the ploughing of deep furroughs from a regional supporter and taken this to mean that the changes afoot may be very significant as the ground is being prepared to be the fertile soil which we hope it to be. Another comment shared was that Besom in Barnet was to become a beacon of hope for people who have been distanced from God.

The use of the Warehouse which was very generously provided by St Peter’s Bourne over many years was a fantastic resource due to its location, accessibility and the fact its provision was a gift to us. As times and priorities change, the use of this resource, which due to our inactivity was not being actively used was terminated.

There has been very little movement on the finance side in 2021, with one donation received and expenditure relating to the van (repairs preparing it for its MOT) and the liability insurance which is organised by a local Besom in turn for all Besoms, hence the reimbursement is always to a different individual.

Van which we bought early in the year has unfortunately remained unused. This was for all the reasons mentioned previously including pandemic. In the period following the end of the year in question, Besom in Barnet core team considered the future of the van and

- following a review of the costs of running the van

- consideration of sharing the van with another charity, and

- uncertainty surrounding what Besom in Barnet will look like going forward

it was decided that the van should be sold. In order to run the van going forward, about £2,000 p.a. would be required. Should a van be required going forward then it could be possible to hire one for a particular occasion without having the additional cost and work.

The van was bought for over £4,850 in early 2000.

We are encouraged by the development of the ideas behind what Besom in Barnet should be when relaunched and by the loyalty of the core team and many others. Once the role has been defined the team will need to reach out and communicate this to churches and individuals which will culminate in a relaunch. Timing for this is still open.
