2. Our recruitment and training
We are imme115ely proud of our core developnient training coutsc and have train&1 26 volunteers in 2023124,
incr¢asing our aclive volunteers from 95 to 103. Due to successful recruitmcnt drivc5 and two information days
each yeai., we continue to have a waiting list foi. trainiiig. In addition, this year we have trained nine shiti
leaders. len online chat volun¢¢¢rs and l 00 ot our active listening volunteer5 have completed their mandatory
Irainiiig.
Continiiiiig development is vital lo not only enhance skills. but also to iinpiove morale. aid retention, make
volunt¢ei3 feel valued and also to develop a leaiming cultuit in the branch. Our team have held tiir¢e ¢onlinuing
development w0￿shopS in the year which have been extremely well attended and very positively evaluated.

4. Our outreach work
Outreach is how we engag¢ with people ivho Inigl)L not otlierwise have access to our services and support. It
involves us being out in the local coinmunity. being visible, approachable and accessible. We have continued to

and suicide. We have trained 35 of our volunteers in outreach Éhis year.
4.1 Supporting loeal Homtltss People
Rcscarch trom tlie Office tor National Statistics (2018) indicates that suicidc is the seL'und most cummun Lause
OL. dcath among people who are homeless in F.ngland. Thirteen per cent ot deaths Idst ycai" atnDng hotnclcss
people were duc to suicide. With this in mind: we strengttiened our relationship witli Craivley Open House, a
year-round hi￿ support hostel. for people vlho experiencing homele&sness and hardship. We have set up
fortnightly visits and offer cmotional supw>rt to thc scrvicc users.
Wc continue to offer fortnightly emotional support sessions at Horshani Salvation Amy and havc built lip
r¢spcrt and trust from the Use￿ ot.the service and the volunteers.
In 2023124 wc made 46 visits to Salvation Amiy and Crawley Open House.

4.2 Supporting our 10¢41 agrieulfur*l eommunity
Reports in 2019 have indiLated that at l¢as¢ oli¢ agriciiltural iyorker takes theii. own life each week in the UK.
For many years now M'e have be¢n siriving to forge links with this high-risk group.
With our brund beeoniing more I'ecognisable amongst our local farmers, li'e decided to attend the thi'ee-day
South of England Agricultural Shoiv ii) June 2023, which was hugely successful.
In S¢pt¢inber 2023 w¢ had a stand at the Wesi Grinstead Ploughing match, where we gave out leaflets and
raised awareness of Samaritans. We used biynded cai. stickers aiid e]icouraged farniers to place tliem in their
tractors and work vehicles.
We liave IK)oked io attend both events again in 2024.
4.3 Supporting staff and students at our loegl schools
Schools remain a high priority in our region, further to a sei'ies of young students iii our secoiidary schools
taking their own lives. As well as secondary schools we ali'eady supwrted, w'e have extended our offer to a new
secoiidary school, Bohiinl, and have cari'ied out several assemblies for the students. We have also carried out
cmotional support at a local Agricultural college. Brinsbury.
In 2023124 we have carried out 9 school l college visits.
4.4 Suppoiting patient5 Ivilh chronle paln
Patients iii chi'onic pain, wailing foi. sui'gery, are another hitrh-risk group of depression and suicide. Two events
took place (Crawley and Horsham) in association wilh (he MSK physiotherapy depar¢m¢nt. The aim ot- these
session5 was ¢0 SLlPPOrt those aH'ailing Ireatment.
4.5 SuppoY¢ing Prisoners at our two locAI prison5
Our prison work alongside E&81bourne, Brighton and Worthing branches has continued. with a total of 4 prison
visits diis year.
4.6 Supportlng passenger5 and statT 4t our lo¢al Network Rall statlons
Deaths or sei'ious injLTries on the rnilways can have a huge impact on those involv¢d. aiid dliring 2023124 there
have been several deaths on the line at Thire Bridges ahd Ga¢wi¢k sthiions. Our branch have offered niultiple
¢motional support visits to Three Brillges station, supporting ix)th station statl and passengers.
Thi5 year we took parl in Nvo Networt( Rail campaigns Brew Monday and Small Talk Saves Lii'es, boih
suc¢esstiJlly raised awllreness within railway stations and oih¢r piiblic settings about the iieed to trust your
instincts and start a simple conversation if you think soineone might need help.
In total we have cai'i'ied oiit 14 awai'cnes5 1 cniocional support sessions at our local stations.
4.7 Supporting the LGBTIQ+ communlty
Mental health pioblems such as depi'ession, self-harm, alcohol and drug abuse and suicidal thoughts ¢gn affect
anyone, but they are twice as wminon among people who are LGBTlQ+. In 2023 we attended Crawley Pride
and joined iii tlie parade at Brighton Pride aloiig with their local branch.

once again this year we have had a stand at the Sprin¥ Equinox Beer Festival in HotBham: engaging with the
public and 8iviiig oiit braiided beer mats. We hai'e also reaclied out to th¢ Build¢r5 Merchants ai)d a Crawley
based ￿'0up call¢d . M¢n Shar¢ .
5. Engagement with Samarltans CentrAI Office 4nd other branche5
We continue to welcom¢ visits and joinl working with our colleagues at Ceiits'al Oltice and other branches. This
year Horsham and Crawley bi?nch led on the national campaign 'Talk to Us, which involved our volunl¢¢i
beiiig videoed and interviewed. The footage widely shared oli social media platfornis.
Our Branch Director was also inteiviewed for BBC South East News in relation to u fundrniser from Kent ivlio
is running J66 marathons over a year, all in aid of Samaritans.
We have linked up with Aberdeen branch and are now the first branch in the UK to have a branch 'twin . We
shair best practice: support one another, compare different approaches and engage in eaeh other's coiitinuous
development. This year tsvo of our volunteers visited Aberdeen branch and did a listening shift and a team
meeting ivith the volunteers.
