THE BACKGROUND
Woodstock Youth Work Trust (WYWT) was established in 2016 after two years of work bringing it all together. The vision of the Trust is to unite and equip the churches in Woodstock to carry out youth work with a discipleship focus in the community, and through the local secondary school. Our mission statement is:
"To help teenagers in Woodstock realise their identity in Christ through discipleship and mission, and engage them as disciple-makers”
We seek to carry out this mission in a variety of ways and this report is a collation of all the different ways that we seek to implement it, the impact it is having, and the ways we see it expanding in the near future.
We have now had five years of working towards these goals, and so have collated an outline of the activities specifically of the last year, but also with a picture of what we hope to achieve going forward.

OBJECTIVE OVERVIEW
This (academic) year has been really fruitful, as we continue to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. As we have looked at what we offer, the needs have shifted significantly. This has also coincided with increased opportunities in the Chaplaincy side of the work that we offer.
This year has felt like a lot of listening to where God is calling us to be, and what He is calling us to do. Some of this has meant that we have stopped groups that we have been previously running, but another part of it has been using that time to further explore new opportunities, and finding new ways to engage with young people.
Our key objectives for this year have been:
1. Reestablish who we are and what we do as we continue to enter the “new normal”.
2. Consolidate the Chaplaincy role as a fixture in the Marlborough.
3. Train new leaders, both young people, and adults, to take on areas of ministry.
4. Provide opportunities for young people to explore and grow in their faith.
5. Reestablish a regular presence in each of the local churches, and Churches Together.

These objectives have been met in the following ways:
1. REESTABLISH WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO AS WE CONTINUE TO ENTER THE “NEW NORMAL”.
As we continued to be faced with the easing of restrictions, we were able to go back to a lot of the activities that we were running and are involved with. In doing this, we found that some of these activities were still hitting a mark. We also found that some of these activities were no longer meeting the need that they had previously.
2. CONSOLIDATE THE CHAPLAINCY ROLE AS A FIXTURE IN THE MARLBOROUGH.
We have now been running a chaplaincy model in the Marlborough school for 2 years. Over the last year, we have seen this really grow and develop, and become an essential part of the school life and what it is offering. Not only have there been two distinct chaplaincy spaces within the school, but the number of students and staff accessing the chaplaincy in one form, or another has been incredibly encouraging. It has been amazing to see how integral this role has become as part of the school life.
3. TRAIN NEW LEADERS, BOTH YOUNG PEOPLE, AND ADULTS, TO TAKE ON AREAS OF MINISTRY.
Due to a lot of the focus of the work shifting to school side of the role, it has been difficult to enable other adults to take areas of responsibility within the ministry. This presence in the school, however, has allowed for several opportunities to enable and encourage student leadership. This has been most evident in the establishing of chaplaincy helpers made up from 6 6[th] form students who were planning, praying for, and running a faith exploration group for the rest of the school.
4. PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO EXPLORE AND GROW IN THEIR FAITH.

We use a model of discipleship that aims to meet young people at the start of their journey, where they can first explore what it means and looks like to know God, and start to understand who He is. To help those who have made a faith commitment to keep growing in their relationship with God, and then to lead activities, people, and groups out of this faith. This last year, it has been really exciting to see young people at each of these stages really stepping up.
5. REESTABLISH A REGULAR PRESENCE IN EACH OF THE LOCAL CHURCHES, AND CHURCHES TOGETHER.
Over the pandemic, we were unable to have the same presence in the local churches that we would like as they were not meeting in person. This effected our ability to be as embedded and engaged in local church life as we would like to be. This last year, we have been able to re-establish these connections, and have a regular rhythm of attending services of the churches that we partner with. This has been a really helpful way to keep the work of WYWT in the forefront of the minds of those whose partnership we rely on, and value.

EXISTING GROUPS
There are a number of regular groups that Woodstock Youth Work Trust is involved with running. The following is a brief description of each group that has existed over the last year, as well as the content that is generally covered in each group. This section does not include the groups that have been established through the Chaplaincy role, which will be covered in the following section.
ENCOUNTER
Encounter is our youth worship service that runs once a month. The group is for young people aged eleven to eighteen, and meets at St Mary Magdalene’s Church, Woodstock. We meet for two hours on a Saturday evening and give the young people who attend the opportunity to experience and encounter God, whether it’s for the first time in their life, or a daily reality for them.
“I have loved every moment and it has really helped me on my journey through faith and so thank you for that.”
Coming out of the restrictions of the pandemic, we were excited to be able to restart meeting for Encounter. We started meeting again in the Autumn and used the relaunch as an opportunity to involve young people with delivering it, specifically in the music, which was all led by young people. We also opened it back up to other local youth ministries who might be interested.
Unfortunately, despite having a core group of young people who were really invested in Encounter, we did not have a big enough group to create the feel of the time that we felt was needed. To compound this, half of the group are leaving for university in the coming Autumn. We therefore, made the decision to stop meeting for Encounter, and explore new ways to support and disciple the few that are still engaged with it.

TRIPLET
Triplet is a small discipleship group that meets weekly to discuss life, faith, and everything in between. It is a space to intentionally meet in groups of 2- 4 for discipleship, where the young people are encouraged in their faith, and challenged towards growth in their lives and leadership.
“It’s been really helpful to have a place to ask questions and discuss these things.”
Currently, we have one triplet that is running, but would be willing to expand this as young people who are interested and ready for that level of commitment emerge. The Triplet that is currently meeting consists of our youth worker, and 2 Year 13 boys.
The focus of the time has been around encouraging the young people to reflect on their lives and where they see God, as well as sharing what they feel they are currently learning about Him. We have also spent significant time talking about leadership, helping them to understand their gifts and how they might be used, and starting to think about what areas of leadership they have been called to, whether teaching at other events, sharing their faith with others, or even starting to think about who they might disciple themselves.
PRAYER UPDATES
Prayer is at the very heart of all that we do. Since before WYWT formally existed, we have had a team of committed Christians, who are praying for the work that we are doing, and the young people that we are connecting with.
“I really believe in all the work that you’re doing, and appreciate being able to be a part of it in this way.”

Every month, we send out a newsletter to over 50 people who are reading the stories of what has been happening, seeing the specific events and activities that are taking place, and praying specific prayers to support the work and young people.
We genuinely believe that it is this prayer that creates a bedrock for everything that we do, and hope to continue to grow the team that is supporting the work in this way.
WOODSTOCK YOUTH CLUB
Woodstock Youth Club is the local youth club that is run weekly and has been around for many years. As this is a key part of the community in Woodstock, it was felt that WYWT should, as part of its remit, support what already exists for the young people in Woodstock.
“We are so appreciative of the work you do here.”
Woodstock Youth Club have a good knowledge of who we are and the work we are doing and are very supportive of it. Being involved with the weekly drop-in that is held there, has been helpful in terms of being able to come alongside different young people within the community, as well as to support the work that the youth club is doing.
The youth club re-opened this year, after having been closed for the duration of the pandemic and various restrictions. Since re-opening, there has been a decline in the numbers of those attending. We are having on-going conversations with the team at the youth club about what we can do to help to change this trend.

CHAPLAINCY WORK
A significant amount of the focus of the last year has been in developing the chaplaincy role within the Marlborough CofE School, the local Secondary Comprehensive. This has been supported by the fact that the school has provided a space for chaplaincy to happen, in the form of an office/meeting room, and an outdoor reflection space. These have really enabled the work in the school to flourish.
PASTORAL SUPPORT
Over the course of the year, we have been able to meet regularly with various students in the school for mentoring. These are students that relationships have been established with over the year, and identified by the pastoral team as needing more positive attention from staff.
“I really appreciate knowing that you are there when I need someone to rant at.”
Across a fortnight, we meet with students who are a scheduled session for a variety of different reasons, as well as being available for any students who need it more in the moment.
This is responsive to the needs of the individual, and as such, we have been able to support a number of different students with a wide range of struggles going on in their lives.
SUPPORT BASES
The location of the chaplaincy space, has meant that we are based right in the heart of the pastoral centre for the school. This has created an

opportunity to meet and get to know some of the students who are struggling the most.
This natural crossover has been so essential to making the role work in school, as it creates space for the students to meet and naturally get to know us on their turf, rather than expecting them to seek out chaplaincy on our terms. It has allowed us to develop relationships with, and support students who otherwise may not access chaplaincy.
CHAPLAINCY HELPERS
Last year, we set-up a faith group for the 6[th] formers. As the majority of those that were attending were in year 12, it meant that this year, we had an extra year with them. Capitalising on the work we had done with them the previous year, we invited them to become chaplaincy helpers, and run a similar group for the young years.
“Thank you for all that you’ve done for [my child]. It has really gone above, and beyond, and we really appreciate it.”
We met for the first half of the year to plan and pray for opening a new faith group that would be open to the whole school, called “Retold”. They then chose the content they wanted to lead, and each week, they would lead different aspects of this time together.
It has been such a blessing to see these 6 guys really step up and grow in their faith, through how they lead and teach others. Worker with this group has definitely been a highlight of the year.
RETOLD
With the help of the Chaplaincy Helpers, we launched a group called “Retold” In Jaunary this year. The purpose behind this was to give the 6[th] formers an opportunity to lead their peers, and to give the rest of the student body an opportunity to explore faith.

“Thank you for running Retold this year, I’ve really enjoyed, and I’m looking forward to coming back next year.”
This got off to a rocky start, when no-one showed up for the first few weeks. We committed to keep meeting, and to just pray, and see what happened when we reached February half-term. On the fourth or fifth week, a group of about 5 students showed up, and this has steadily grown for the rest of the year to about 20.
There have been times where it’s felt a bit chaotic or mismanaged, and we had to adjust the content that we were looking at because it was beyond where the group was at spiritually, but ultimately, it has been really encouraging to work with a group of young people who are interested to keep learning.
FAITH IN THE COMMUNITY
The Marlborough School runs a Wednesday afternoon elective programme, and as part of this, over the course of the year, all year 7 students engage with an elective called ‘Faith in the Community’. This is a term where they will explore the contexts of different faiths, and what that looks like in their communities.
“I thought going to a church was going to be boring, but that was actually alright.”
Supporting this has enabled us to come alongside every single year 7 student, and help share what it looks like to be Christian. By taking them to the local churches, leading sessions about what Baptism looks like, and most excitingly, creating spaces and opportunites for them to engage with prayer and reflection.

This has been such a great opportunity, and really allowed for us to get to know all the students that are starting at Marlborough, and hopefully creating a relational bedrock that will continue through the rest of their school career.
PASTORAL PRESENCE
One of the biggest lessons that we’ve learned through the chaplaincy role so far is the importance of being available. In order to meet young people where they are at; you need to be where they are at.
In light of this, we have made sure that we are available at social times throughout the day, either on the playground, or open for drop-ins. This has allowed us to meet a greater number of the students than if we remained based solely in the pastoral base.
As well as this, we have supported extra-curricular activities and events in the school, such as Basketball, the school show, and the leavers Prom. All of these have allowed us to meet students in a variety of different settings, and come alongside them in different ways.
STAFF PRAYER
One of the ways that we’ve explored chaplaincy for the staff as well as the students is to offer a weekly time of prayer for the staff. This has had limited success with not many at all taking up the offer. Those that have, however, have thoroughly appreciated the opportunity to start their day more contemplatively.

OTHER EVENTS
As well as the weekly groups that we run, we also have less regular events that we run and host as part of the work of the Trust. The following is a brief description of what they are, and the impact they have on the community, and the young people of Woodstock. Some of these have been as part of the chaplaincy work.
PRAYER SPACE
At the end of this (academic) year, we ran the annual, week-long prayer space that we run at Marborough.
“Please don’t get rid of this space, it’s amazing”
This is always an incredible week, where we see the local churches come in to support lessons for every year 7, 8, & 9 class to get hands on experience with prayer and reflection. It is a lot of work to create the immersive experience that the students get, but it is very rewarding to see how powerfully moved by and engaged with prayer the students are.
It is particularly moving as it feels like a core of our values, to be able to be a link between the local churches enabling prayer to happen within the school.
ASSEMBLIES
As part of the Chaplaincy role, we have been able to deliver a number of assemblies to the school body. This year, they have all been prerecorded, but from feedback that we have received, these have still been very well received. Prerecording has also allowed the assemblies to be more “polished” as well, and for us to be more creative in how we deliver them.

“When’s the next ‘What’s the Sound on the Playground?’?”
Working under the title of “Chaplain” has also meant that we have been able to be more direct about the faith content in assemblies than we may have been able to have been previously, while still remaining accessible for the wide audience that would be watching them.
A particular highlight was one assembly where, due to the prerecorded nature, we spent some time recording the students answers to questions on the playground, and incorporated it into the assembly in a segment that we called ‘What’s the Sound on the Playground?’.
CHARITY
This year we have been able to support the school in their Charity week. In particular, this involved gathering and delivering boxes of food to donate to the food bank and resources to the local baby bank.
“I really enjoyed getting to help deliver the food to food bank. It really makes you feel good to make a difference like that.”
As well as providing contact with the local food and baby banks, we supported the school by gathering all the donations that staff and students had made over the week with the help of the charity volunteers made up of year 9 students. Then, along with some volunteers from the 6[th] form, we delivered these donations to the food and baby banks. This ended up being a really impactful event for the school, the food and baby banks, and the students who helped.
We are hoping to be able to take these initiatives in school and make them longer term. The idea would be that we make food bank donations a regular activity of the school.

CHURCH ATTENDANCE
Since the Trust is partnering with several of the local churches, one thing that we try to do is make sure we are present at each of the churches.
“Thank you so much for sharing with us- it really helped to be able to picture the work that you’re doing, and what your role looks like.”
It has been really encouraging for this to happen again more regularly this year, and to pick up that regular contact with the local churches. We have particularly enjoyed the amount of support that there is for all the work of WYWT from local Christians. Being able to touch base with them in this way has enabled them to feel more aware of and a part of the work that is happening, and it has allowed us to feel more supported and championed by the local Christian community.
OTHER RELATIONSHIPS
LOCAL CHURCHES
Currently, WYWT is supported by the local Anglican, Baptist, and Methodist churches. This is really important to us, as the heart of the vision for WYWT is for the work to be done ecumenically.
Since the beginning of the Trust, all the churches have really bought into the vision, and have committed to supporting it prayerfully, financially, and each providing a trustee to represent their church, which so far has been working really well.

This allows each church to communicate the needs they see within the community, giving us the opportunity to create a holistic ministry approach. It also allows each church to have an on-going awareness of the work that we are doing and know how to best pray for the Trust.
CHURCHES TOGETHER
One of the things that we are involved with is the Churches Together in Woodstock and Bladon. This has meant that the work that the Trust is doing is getting more exposure, as well as opening other opportunities within the Christian community of Woodstock to us.
As well as being given opportunities to speak at different ecumenical things, being involved with Churches Together has allowed us to hear more about what is happening in Woodstock, and to have a voice in shaping how the churches are a part of this. Since taking a more active part in Churches Together, we have also seen the interest and understanding of who we are and what we do increase amongst the people involved.
MARLBOROUGH COFE SCHOOL
The local secondary school is a key component of the community in Woodstock, especially for the young people. It is, therefore, really beneficial to have an on-going relationship with them. Since we have been present in the school, the SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) inspection grade has gone from ‘Satisfactory’ to ‘Good’.
Since the inception of WYWT, Marlborough has been involved with the running of the trust, supportive of the work that we do, and allowed us to work in the school in a variety of ways. It has been this on-going partnership that has resulted in the establishment of a new Chaplaincy within the school. This is funded to enable our youth worker to be in the school for part of his work week and support the school in all ways detailed in this report.
REIGN MINISTRIES
Reign Ministries is another local youth work charity, based in Bicester and Witney. As well as running local youth ministries, they also work to train and equip youth leaders.

As well as being personally supported and mentored through the staff and programmes at Reign, we have also helped to serve with a number of their programmes, as a means of further leadership and professional development. We have also been invited to join their team of youth workers that are making a national impact over several churches and ministries.
In addition to this, our youth worker has a small part-time role with Reign Ministries. This will further their skills specifically in coaching and training that will support and grow the work of WYWT.
GORDO E.S.U
Gordo E.S.U is a local Explorer Scout Unit based in Kidlington. While this is not a formal part of the work of WYWT, being involved with it over the last few years has been really beneficial to the work of the Trust.
Involvement with the Scouts Association means that they provide access to many free training opportunities, allowing our youth worker to further his leadership skills, get a First Aid qualification, and even pay to get a minibus license, all of which benefit us in our continued work.
As well as this, it is another opportunity to engage with local young people, get to know them, and have lots of opportunities during hikes, on a Monday night, and around a camp fire to talk about all things big and small. This has also lead to good conversations about faith, and some young people going on to explore their faith as a result of these conversations.
OXFORDSHIRE DIOCESE
We have developed and cultivated good links with the Oxfordshire Diocese. In particular, this has been with the Chaplaincy Advisor, as they have continued to commission, and support the Chaplaincy role within the Marlborough School.
This has resulted in further chaplaincy training and equipping, as well as access to networks of other chaplains across the Diocese to connect with and learn from.
These links are also helpful as we continue to network and establish new connections with other youth workers. In particular, with events like

OXtoberfest and Encounter restarting, we are hopeful that by working closer with the Diocese, we will be able to increase the awareness of these events.

PLANNED GROWTH
As opportunities continue to come up within Woodstock in regard to youth work, we want to be responding to them, and starting new groups and events to meet these needs. Sometimes, this can be new opportunities that we are not expecting, however, there are areas that we are actively working on to grow what it is we do. Specific expansion and growth of what we already offer is omitted as it is outlined above.
WOODSTOCK PRIMARY SCHOOL
Over the last year, we have had initial conversations with the local Primary School in Woodstock. The conversation was around how we can grow and develop the chaplaincy role to be replicated into the Primary School. Having this connection will really support the work in Marlborough as well, as when the students come up, they already have a basis for who we are and what we are about.
The Primary School was really receptive to the idea, and we are exploring a chaplaincy model for half a day a week, where we liaise with the local clergy to offer a mix of collective worship, reflective practice, and pastoral presence.
The plan is that over the next year, we can cement this into a formal agreement, and start to see chaplaincy happening in this way in the Primary School.
WIDER NETWORK
One of the things that we are aware of is the need to raise the profile of who we are and what we are doing locally. At the moment, we have done a good job of bringing in Christians and churches from Woodstock. With the expansion of the role into Marlborough, it feels like there is an increased scope as there are a number of other local towns and villages that young people attend Marlborough from.

Over the next year, we want to invest some time exploring our connections with other local churches, and seeing how we can work with them to increase what is happening through WYWT.
FUTURE GROWTH
As the relationships within and around Woodstock continue to grow and expand, the hope is that so too, will the work. We really believe that there are some big things in Woodstock and Oxfordshire that God is doing, and we long to keep being a part of it. Working towards this is on-going, which makes it a bit hard to know precisely the things that we will be working towards in the future beyond the growth that is already planned and in the pipeline. There are some pieces, however, that we hope will be incorporated as the vision takes shape.
PRIMARY SCHOOLS
As we expand the network area that we are operating over, we hope that this will increase our connections with local primary schools. By launching a pilot chaplaincy model in Woodstock Primary, we hope that is creates a model that we can then take to all the feeder Primary Schools for Marlborough.
BIGGER TEAM
In order for the growth outlined above to be sustainable, we need to look at the team that we have supporting it. At the moment, we only recruit volunteers to help with the work, but we have started to have conversations around having a base of volunteers to help with fundraising to support the work that we do.
We have also started to talk about raising money to be able to employ someone to help support the work that we are doing, particularly in terms of taking a lead with the Primary Schools and the model for chaplaincy we are looking at developing that area.
