Our alms and objectives
Our charity's purposes are set out in our ujnstitution:
1. The protection and preservation of the environment for ttE public benefft by recycling
books and other literature within the local communty.
To advan￿ the education of the public by promoting reading in the k)cal communty
Our Work in 2020121
Our aims for the year were to continue to re-home books from our Unit in the Galleria by
offering our customers three free books on each visit, whilst improving the shop fixtures
and fittings to provide a better customer experien￿.
Unfortunalely our Work towards those aims was interNpted by the global COVID-19 Pan-
demic which saw the impositton of a number of national lockdowns after Mard) 2020 forc-
ing our shop to close for a part of Ihe reporting year.
The Twstee Board has aLtted wtth regard to guidan￿ issued by the Charity Commission to
ensure that the charity works towards the aims set out above.
Achlevements
The total number of books re-homed Sin￿ opening in December 2016 contin￿1 to in-
crease at a rate of approximately 50,000 per annum. Thi8 work saved the books going to
landfill or pulping both of which have considerable environmental impact.
We continue to have a very diverse volunteer team with members coming from a range of
countries. We have been pleased to provide a number of our volunteers wrth valuable
work experien￿ and have been able to he￿> with course y￿rk asswJnments from the Uni-
versity of Hertfordshire. We have also provMJed volunteerirNJ opportun5tEs for local people
through the Welwyn Haffield CVS.
We continued to supply books to a number of other local charities including the Welham
Green Book Swap and the Hospital Shop at Bamet General Hosprtal.
We have a well st(Kj{￿l Chiklren's Section which has allowed us lo promote reading for all
ages.
Our Social Media feeds are used to promote reading aThJ continue to be a popular link with
our customers.
Financial Reylew

The charlties finances have been affected by the Covwj 19 restricti￿ iMpl￿ent￿ by the
government. The shop has been for a months and Sin￿ re-opening we are
now Operati￿ reduced opening I￿UrS due to lad( of volunteers which meant the cash do-
nations have been reduod.
However the shop is getting busier now and the cash donations are now increasing.
The Chartiies finan￿ remain very healthy due to prudent management of the ac-
counts.
Reserves Pollcy
The current ￿ase agreement wih Land Securilies Limiied has been exter￿￿￿ du8 10
COVID-19 and will be subject to fijture negotiatbon. The ￿ase ¢urrentty includes a break
clause which in theory could require Free Books Haffiekd to rel￿ate v￿thin one month. In
the event of this clause being invoked or the current lease not being reneV￿ by Land Se-
cutities Free Books Hatfield would be forced to find altemative accommodation and in the
mean time place ts existing stock in storage. It is estimated that funds in excess of
£10,000 coukl be required for this process. In deciding upon reserves trustees have taken
account of the information contsined in Charity Commission dc￿￿ment Charity reserves:
