Chair’s introduction

KidsAid has a heart and soul, which shines through in all it does, and being its Chair is a privilege, a challenge, and a tremendous opportunity to transform young lives.

The growing children’s mental health crisis is reflected in our own statistics. Last year, a combination of individual, attachment, and group therapies were delivered to a total of 329 beneficiaries, which is an increase of 50% compared to the previous year.

At a National level, the Children’s Commissioner for England and Wales, has reported that a survey of over half a million children revealed that 1 in 5 are worried about their mental health, and highlights that the need for ‘easy and early access to mental health support is vital. It needs to be provided exactly where they are, whether in school, at home via online services, or in the community, to help prevent problems escalating.’

I am pleased to report that KidsAid continues to strive to provide excellent mental health support to children and families within the community, and schools, and to put the needs of children at the centre of everything it does.

KidsAid has re-structured and transformed both the Board and the Executive Team, to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead. It has strengthened many processes, including financial controls and risk management, introduced a code of conduct for trustees, and invested in training for both staff and trustees.

The only certainty is change, and KidsAid will collaborate with the Integrated Care System, and extend our reach within the communities we serve, while seeking opportunities to extend services to new areas. We will actively seek to work with the corporate sector where this aligns with our values and interests and will lobby to secure commissioned work from Northamptonshire Health Foundation Trust, to help the Trust reduce the current three year wait for children on the trauma pathway to be seen.

CEO Report

KidsAid has faced a challenging year. The marked increase in children with complex needs and the severe shortage of adequate support has created significant demand for our services.

The requirement for local mental health provision rose substantially during the Covid lockdowns, and as the legacy of the pandemic is still being navigated by many young people, the need for support has endured. Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) are oversubscribed, and many children do not meet the threshold to receive treatment.

Every day in our work, KidsAid witnesses the issues caused by lack of early help and preventative services as increasing numbers of young people are nearing crisis.

Wherever possible, we adopt a systemic approach when working with young people as our experience informs us that where a child is struggling, the parent/carer and family are often struggling too. We consider caregivers’ mental health a crucial determinant of a child’s wellbeing, and we understand that parents are the most significant agents of change for their children.

We are encouraged to see our values aligned with the Children’s Commissioner and Northamptonshire’s Integrated Care System (ICS), who acknowledge that children exist as part of families and not as isolated individuals. Both the ICS and the Children’s Commissioner have highlighted the need to offer holistic support to parents and family systems to transform young lives.

In the last 12 months, our dedicated staff, trustees, and supporters have worked tirelessly to help address the complex needs of vulnerable young people. We delivered 3, 174 hours of therapy to a total of 257 children, and our interventions lasted an average of 35 weeks.

Supporting young people for this length of time is costly and takes significant resource. But, it is necessary. KidsAid prides itself on being an honest service, and our outcomes prove that this level of support is often required so that children can process their trauma safely and at their own pace, when they have had sufficient time to build trust with their therapist.

Alongside our interventions with young people, last year KidsAid delivered 900 hours of therapeutic support to 72 parents, who had been through their own trauma and were experiencing mental health difficulties.

Parents and carers need to feel empowered to support their children through life’s experiences while recognising their own triggers and seeking help when needed. Therapeutic parenting approaches and adult psychotherapies enable caregivers to develop healthier coping strategies and become more emotionally available to their children. KidsAid is one of only a few providers nationwide delivering therapies to support parents’ mental health alongside our work with children. That’s why we consider ourselves a specialist therapeutic service.

The provision landscape for young people is going through a period of change, and it is promising to see positive steps undertaken by Northamptonshire’s ICS to bring the health, social care, and voluntary sector together.

CEO Report

KidsAid has declared our support for the ICS as we recognise that those we serve will benefit from our engagement with other services to exchange best practice. Though we hold our values constant, we are keen to learn, adapt and evolve as needed to maintain professional excellence.

For charities like KidsAid that do not receive statutory funding, the ICS presents an opportunity, and we believe that it is more important than ever that the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector works collectively to strengthen our voice and increase our sustainability. We also recognise our responsibility to demonstrate the impact systemic change can have for children and their families – both now and for future generations.

It is an exciting time for KidsAid. This past year, we have developed and achieved organisational change by restructuring the board and executive team. This includes the recruitment of talented trustees who add a wealth of knowledge to our board; the introduction of the Business Development and Finance and Risk Subcommittees who regularly examine critical areas in the charity; and Policy Development Groups to ensure greater accountability.

As we look ahead into this next year, we are enthusiastic about introducing the role of Marketing Lead to the board. We will also grow our executive team by recruiting an Operations Manager and additional roles within Business Development.

On behalf of the Charity, I would like to thank the generosity of our supporters, partners, and grant funders who continue to make our work possible. Every act of kindness makes a significant difference. The compassion of our community is inspiring, particularly during these challenging times.

Thank you to the staff (past and present) for their ongoing contribution. Being part of such a remarkable, resilient, and passionate team is a privilege.

Finally, I am hugely grateful to our Chair, Tony, and to the Board of Trustees, who serve, support, and scrutinise the Charity’s work. Their governance over the last year has been invaluable.

OUR TEAM

The charity is fortunate to have a highly dedicated and motivated staff team who all have a background in mental health, family support, and service delivery. While each individual has specialist skills, there is a genuine desire to work as a team and to create a supportive and flexible approach to the work we deliver.

Why We Are Needed!

Children and young people are at the sharp end of a mental health crisis that appears to worsen daily. Yearly referrals to Child and Young People Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) have risen by 53% since 2019. (NHS Digital, 2022) and urgent referrals of children to emergency mental health services have tripled (Young Minds, 2023). Yet in 2022, a third of children referred to CAMHS with a mental health problem did not receive treatment (Children’s Commissioner, March 2023).

Locally, the picture is the same. In Northamptonshire, the number of referrals to statutory provision has increased by 180% in the past two years, and the waiting time is increasing for appointments (West Northamptonshire Council Cabinet, March 2023).

This is also the case in counties surrounding Northamptonshire, such as Peterborough, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire (NHS Digital, 2022) as well as Oxfordshire (Oxfordshire Health and Wellbeing Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, 2022) and Leicestershire (Leicestershire Join Health and Wellbeing Strategy, 2022).

In 2023, CAMHS reported a rise in complex mental health referrals in Buckinghamshire. While Warwickshire states that mental health referrals for infants aged 0-4 years have doubled since the COVID pandemic (Warwickshire Joint Needs Assessment, 2023).

How we work

Our interventions include art, creative, dance movement, drama, and play therapies. These therapies facilitate non-verbal expression and allow young people to communicate while maintaining a safe psychological distance from their trauma.

Our therapies are non-directive, which empowers our beneficiaries as they are given autonomy in their therapy sessions.

We work with children for a period of six-to-twelve months, to give them sufficient time to safely process traumatic life experiences and find healthy coping mechanisms to support their long-term mental health.

Our approach is unique because access to affordable long-term provision is exceptionally rare; KidsAid is the only charity in Northamptonshire and surrounding areas offering this level of support for children and young people.

We are proud to bridge this gap in provision, as without our service, local children with high-level need would have nowhere to turn and be unable to overcome early years’ trauma.

How we are funded

KidsAid’s services are funded through a combination of community and corporate fundraising, grants from trusts, and spot commissioning from Northamptonshire Children’s Trust, schools, adoption agencies, other charities, and families.

In 2022-23 we received an incredible £100,738 from grant making trusts!

Thanks to the support of these grant making trusts, we were able to deliver our core work plus a variety of projects including wellbeing support, group therapies, and one-to-one therapy interventions for children and their parents.

Safeguarding

As we work with vulnerable children and families, safeguarding is of the greatest importance to KidsAid.

Every trustee, staff member, therapist, student, and volunteer must undertake safeguarding training as part of their induction to KidsAid. In addition, the Safeguarding Lead Trustee, and the Designated Safeguarding Officers are expected to keep up to date with safeguarding legislation, which feeds into our annual review of our policy and procedures.

As a reflection of our dedication to providing quality and safe services, in 2023, KidsAid will be investing in new safeguarding software, My Concern. We will also be implementing a safeguarding audit across the organisation which will identify key areas for development.

Charity collaborations

KidsAid is proud to be partnered with other community organisations, such as NGAGE and Spring Charity who we have collaborated with to deliver group therapy sessions.

Our work with NGAGE facilitates group therapy sessions for young people who have struggled with drug and alcohol use.

We offer young people a supportive space that provides connection and creative expression where healthy coping mechanisms are explored.

Feedback has revealed positive changes in participants, who have shared that they have gained confidence and skills to support their mental health and well-being.

Our work with Spring Charity brings isolated parents and their children together who are offered a creative space to support their well-being.

“Over the years of us working with Spring Charity I have seen an improvement in the way parents use these sessions to positively interact with their children, in a child-led and developmentally friendly way.

The well-being sessions create a nurturing space for parents to sit alongside their children and take part in crafts and activities. For many of the parents who attend, the sessions are as much of a social outlet for them, as they are for their children.

Evaluation and monitoring

Evaluation and monitoring underpin every element of KidsAid’s provision: review procedures are embedded throughout the organisation to ensure quality of delivery, evidence-based practice, and sustainability of outcomes.

Pre and post intervention data is gathered for every beneficiary we work with, and evaluation of the quality of our work is ongoing through regular interim review meetings between the therapist and parents/carers and professionals.

Our data is collated from a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods including:

KidsAid is a child-led service, and the therapist and beneficiary relationship is central to our approach. Reviewing each therapy intervention happens systematically and routinely in every meeting, and our beneficiaries are empowered by their therapist to discuss their own desired outcomes, which guides the aims we strive to achieve.

KidsAid provide regular one-to-one and group clinical supervision to our therapist team to ensure safe practice. Our approach to supporting our therapist team also plays a vital role in quality assurance, performance improvement and risk management.

We use a client database/CRM to securely record beneficiary data, outcome measures and safeguarding concerns. Therapist case notes are stored in accordance with the GDPR and Data Protection Act.

KidsAid review our clinical administrative processes and assess referral statistics through quarterly review meetings to ensure best practice.

Emma’s Story

From Beneficiary to Volunteer.

A Journey of Giving Back with KidsAid.

KidsAid has supported countless children and young people over the years, offering a safe space to navigate childhood difficulties following traumatic experiences in early life.

Among the many success stories that have emerged from KidsAid, one example stands out – the story of Emma, a former beneficiary who has since become a dedicated volunteer, committed to helping other young people who have been through similar experiences.

Emma is now a dedicated volunteer for KidsAid and gives her time to support the team at local community events. She says, “I love being at KidsAid; everyone gets along and is so approachable. It allows me to be involved and be myself.” Emma is now setting up a young person focus group, so their voice influences the work of our organisation.

Emma’s journey from a young beneficiary to a dedicated volunteer is a testament to our impact on young lives.

The therapy Emma received from KidsAid has significantly impacted her life. Since her sessions, Emma has had healthier relationships and developed a stronger sense of self. Emma states, “Both my relationships at home and school improved. I made more friends and talked more to my family - I felt more comfortable doing so after therapy.”

Emma recognises her therapy’s impact on her life; the support she received empowers her to help other young people who have also gone through similar experiences. She explains, “I feel that I need to help out people like me as I found my help so useful, and I now want to do the same.”

£1,950 will fund a child’s therapy for a full academic year.

Structure, Governance and Management

The KidsAid Foundation (KidsAid) was registered as a CIO on 24 June 2016, having previously been unregistered. KidsAid was founded in its original form in 2007.

KidsAid is a child-centred voluntary service. We are proud to deliver long-term, evidence-based therapies alongside innovative interventions at an affordable cost to families who do not have access to other services or have the financial means to fund therapy themselves.

The charity is fortunate to have a highly dedicated and motivated staff steam who all have a background in mental health, family support, and service delivery. While each individual has specialist skills, there is a genuine desire to work as a team and to create a supportive and flexible approach to the work we deliver. These roles are supplemented by a group of highly qualified and experienced sessional therapists.

In addition to staff and therapists, the charity is fortunate to have the support from a committed board who have extensive experience relevant to our work. The Board of Trustees includes:

Our mission is to support children and young people to overcome trauma by providing play, arts-based, family and bespoke therapy packages with the aim of improving poor mental health and empowering children and their care givers to rebuild their futures and reach their potential.

It is the aim of the charity to foster an open and collaborative approach between the staff group, wider therapeutic team, trustees and volunteers where we can actively contribute to the long-term strategic future of the organisation together.

Objectives and Activities

We take a three-pronged approach to our work with children that includes therapeutic support for the individual child, support for parents or care givers and support for professionals working with children.

Our objectives are pursued through several activities including:

We provide our services from our therapy rooms in Northampton or from schools across Northamptonshire (as a combination of one-toone and group sessions), making our support accessible for the children who need it the most.

Therapy for the children, young people, and families we work with is either funded in full by local authorities and schools; part funded between schools, families and KidsAid; or where no funding is available, KidsAid will fund the cost of therapy sessions in full. We will never turn a child or young person away unless we feel we are the wrong service to meet their needs.

We measure our impact through client feedback, and outcome measures which are taken throughout the course of all our therapy interventions to monitor our effectiveness.

Evaluation and monitoring are at the foundation of every element of KidsAid’s provision: review procedures within the organisation are embedded to ensure quality of delivery, evidence-based practice, and sustainability of outcomes.

Report of the Trustees

22/23 was a great year in terms of fund raising and has seen the Charity grow in size.

As KidsAid has grown, it has become necessary to accommodate the growth by investing in the future in a controlled and sustainable manner. We value every £1 donated, raised, or awarded to us, and this is at the forefront of all decisions made, to ensure our funds are spent wisely and add value.

For KidsAid to react and keep pace with the upturn in the need for our services to children, young adults, and families, we need to invest to facilitate the increased demand. This required investing primarily in people. Firstly, we needed more case managers, more therapists, and a support team to coordinate work and legal requirements in providing therapy.

Whilst we had sufficient reserves, we were mindful, that we also needed to ensure as far as possible going forward, that we maximised fund raising and put KidsAid in a position that we would be able to take advantage of opportunities of grant awards and any donations that presented themselves.

The accounting policies were reviewed, and the Trustees were satisfied that all accounting policies were appropriate.

KidsAid is committed to providing therapy to as many children as we can accommodate in Northamptonshire and eventually across more neighbouring counties. Following the work put in to enhance the infrastructure at KidsAid, and the amazing team of case managers, therapists, and support staff, under the excellent leadership of our CEO, Rebecca Caswell-Fox, KidsAid is well placed to deliver funded therapy to an increasing client base.

We know that there is an ever-growing need for our services, and we ll continue to meet ongoing challenges with the continued, and much appreciated support, of our colleagues, board and supporters.

Expenditure on charitable activities increased from £257,550 in 21/22 to £382,132 in 22/23. Income increased from £184,840 in 21/22 to £399,199 in 22/23.

Presented and approved at a board meeting held on 14th October 2023 and signed on their behalf.

With the growth of KidsAid, came the need to ensure all the accounting systems and policies adopted by KidsAid were still appropriate. Sound fiscal management and stability being the cornerstone of ensuring the delivery of the muchneeded therapy to the children, young adults, and families we work with.

The Charity uses cloud accounting software and prepares monthly management accounts, which are distributed to the Trustees, along with supporting notes of activities and matters to highlight. The Charity has an independent bookkeeper, who controls the bank. The Trustees are satisfied that the accounting systems are transparent, robust, and working well.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT

We have examined the accounts of the Charity set out on pages 42 to 48, which have been prepared on the accrual concept for financial year ending 31st March 2023.

This report is made solely to the Trustees in accordance with Section 43 (3) (a) of the Charities Act 2011. Our work has been undertaken so that we might state to the Trustees those matters which we are required to state to them in an independent examiner’s report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the Trustees for our work, for this report, or for the opinions we have formed.

Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and examiner

As described on page 4, the Charity’s Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts; you consider that the audit requirements of Section 144 (2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act) does not apply. It is our responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under Section 156 of the Act, whether particular matters have come to our attention.

Basis of independent examiner’s report

Our examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the accounts, presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently we do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner’s statement

In connection with our examination, not matter has come to our attention:

  1. which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 130 of the Act; and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act have not been met:

Principle Accounting Policies

Basis of preparation

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with the Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) FRS 102 (issued in October 2019), Accounting and Reporting by Charities issued in January 2015, applicable UK Accounting Standards and the Charities Act 2011.

Ultimate Controlling Party

The KidsAid Foundation is a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation controlled and managed by the Management Committee/Trustees individually named in the Annual Report.

Expenditure

Expenditure is stated inclusive of value added tax, and is brought into account in the year in which it is due. Costs are allocated to functional headings on the basis of direct costs plus overheads on a fair and reasonable estimated basis.

Pensions

The CIO operates a NEST Pension Scheme

Tangible fixed assets and depreciation

Depreciation is calculated to write down the cost of all tangible fixed assets by instalments over the expected useful lives.

Income

Donations income is accounted for when received. Therapy income is recognised when the therapy is agreed. Grants are accounted for as receivable in accordance with the grant contracts.

Intangible Income

Intangible income, in the form of donated facilities and voluntary help etc., is not included in the financial statements since it is not considered practicable to quantify such income.

Reserves

The board of Trustees have agreed that the organisation should attempt to maintain a level of reserves that equates to two months of running costs. This policy will be kept under review on an annual bases and will be reviewed when necessary.

Risk

The trustees do not believe the CIO is subject to any substantial risk beyond the liabilities disclosed in its Annual Report and Accounts.
