Trustees’ Report for the year ended 30 November 2025

The Trustees present their annual report and the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 November 2025 which are also prepared to meet the requirements for a directors’ report and accounts for Companies Act Purposes.

The legal and administrative information set out on page 2 forms part of this report. The Trustees confirm that the Trustees’ Report and Financial Statements comply with the current statutory requirements, the requirements of the Company’s governing document and the provisions of the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (FRS 102) applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland, the Charities Act 2011 and the UK Generally Accepted Practice as it applies from January 2015.

Since the Charity qualifies as small under section 383, the strategic report required of medium and large companies under The Companies Act 2006 (Strategic Report and Directors’ Report) Regulations 2013 is not required.

Objectives and activities

The purpose of StrongBack Productions Limited is to promote understanding, appreciation, support and validation of the diversity of modern Britain through drama, mime, dance, singing and music and cross art forms.

StrongBack Productions:

• Works with a range of communities to tell their stories and celebrate their heritage and all that makes them unique.

• Builds platforms from which new stories can be told.

• Examines and documents the rich diversity of lives in the UK from multiple artistic perspectives.

• Builds partnerships that inform and support the realisation of its aims and objectives.

• Offers new work to non-traditional audiences.

• Offers training and mentorships to young and emerging talents.

• Works with practitioners of all ages.

• Creates a legacy with each production.

The activities undertaken in the financial year 1 December 2024 to 30 November 2025 included:

• Come on In: final reports to London Community Fund for the Baytree Centre workshops.

• SongMaps Rye: Fundraising, partnership building and delivery of the public programme of workshops in Rye, East Sussex.

• Fundraising for the new community opera.

In shaping our objectives for the year and planning our activities, the trustees have given due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit, Charities and Public Benefit .

Achievements and Performance

The financial year ending 30 November 2025 marks StrongBack’s 12[th] year of activity.

Projects: Come On In

Baytree Centre poetry workshops 2024 - reporting.

With support from London Community Fund, the 2[nd] and final edition of the 12-week programme of poetry workshops for 9- to 12-year-olds was delivered between April and July 2024. A final report was submitted to London Community Fund at the end of January 2025.

SongMaps Rye

Applications seeking support for the delivery of SongMaps workshop programme were submitted to Arts Council England, Sussex Community Fund, Chalk Cliff Trust and two small trusts. With the award of a project grant from Arts Council England finally in July 2025, the first workshops - percussion workshops - began in Rye in November 2025. The rest of the programme will roll out through Spring and Summer 2026. Funds from the Bernard Nevill Estate and Chalk Cliff Trust awarded in December 2024 are also supporting activities in this programme.

Partnership building

Following months of meetings, StrongBack Productions and Hastings-based opera company Barefoot Opera, entered a partnership to develop and produce a new community opera inspired by Rye’s heritage and the natural and built environment. Plans were drawn up to hold an event ‘raising awareness’ in Rye to harness patron support for this new creative development and partnership.

Fundraising and reporting

Funding for the SongMaps Rye workshop programme has been secured from The Chalk Cliff Trust, the Bernard Neville Estate, Arts Council England, private donors and StrongBack’s patron who wish to remain anonymous.

Potential patrons of the new community opera have been approached, and support is expected between 2026 and 2028 as a result of the ‘raising awareness’ event held at the George Hotel in Rye on 26 November 2025. This event elicited much enthusiasm, keen interest and promises of support that the StrongBack team will pursue over the development and production phases of this project.

The current funding climate continues to be challenging and highly competitive. Securing patron support will be key to ensuring the success of the community opera. The artistic director has also contributed substantial time pro-bono to sustain projects, partnership building, project and company management and ongoing compliance.

Training, Marketing and IT support

The Charity has maintained online presence and visibility through targeted press, social media and website updates. No specialised training was delivered over the financial year to 30 November 2025. IT support was provided by the charity’s IT consultant on a pro-bono basis.

StrongBack Productions, 12 Years of activity

30 November 2025 marks twelve years of activity. Since 2018, the charity’s activities have brought poetry and music into everyday life to reflect communities to themselves and to the wider world.

As noted in previous annual reports, the impact of the pandemic years of 2020-2022 has been exacerbated by the ongoing financial crisis. Funding for the arts is increasingly competitive with fewer funding streams and many organisations folding. Funding bodies tend prioritize the cost-of-living crisis, focusing their criteria away from the arts and London. Today’s priorities are towards underserved communities across the UK, climate change, sustainability and social justice. StrongBack continues to adapt so that projects bring artists and local residents together with experts to share learning and to reflect local concerns and ambitions through participation in collective creativity.

Impact

Since 2013, StrongBack has issued 45 artist commissions

Worked with: 283 performers, directors, designers, lighting designers, writers, musicians, composers, poets, filmmakers and over 80 production and technical facilitators.

Our performances and events have reached 4,000 live audience members. Workshops and talks have attracted over 300 participants. Our online audience hovers between 1,500- 1,800

Collaborations with : Rich Mix, Brixton East, Ovalhouse, Berwick Record Office, The Maltings Theatre and Cinema Berwick-upon-Tweed, Tara Arts, Migration Museum, Imperial War Museum, The British Library, Speaking Volumes, Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, The Baytree Centre, Loughborough Farm, Photofusion, Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, 3Space International House, Brixton Project, London Festival of Architecture, Tilling Green Residents Association, Rye News and Barefoot Opera.

Since 2013, StrongBack has operated on a project funded basis with projects engaging with communities across London, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland and Rye, East Sussex. These include women’s groups in the Bangladeshi Community; young people between the ages of 8-17 of all ethnicities; British-Caribbean people between the ages of 18-84; White British audiences and participants aged 10-90; audiences of all ethnicities aged 10-90.

StrongBack’s unique performances, events, workshops and talks have employed artists from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicities and age-groups. Performances and events have shone a light on aspects of culture, heritage and daily life rarely included in the national picture of culture and arts. Our projects contribute to community cohesion, boosting confidence, and acknowledging belonging.

StrongBack’s artist commissions, mentorships and training-on-the-job have especially boosted the confidence of young, less experienced artists, offering opportunities to lead on curation, project design and coordination in a supportive environment. Many participants and artists have repeatedly stressed the welcome benefits conferred by our projects to their sense of self and of place, including a deeper understanding of the interconnection of cultures and history in contemporary Britain. Audience feedback over twelve years confirms an overwhelming appreciation of our presentations. StrongBack’s projects are important markers that validate the contributions of lesser-known artists and lead to a gradual acceptance of difference.

2025 marks the 3[rd ] phase of SongMaps Rye as the charity establishes a presence beyond London. Successful funding applications should ensure the delivery of workshops based at Rye Youth Zone, Primary Schools across Rye, Tilling Green Community Centre, The Discovery Centre at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and facilitated by arts and environmental science educators from Rye, East Sussex and London.

Financial Review

The Charity’s financial position is shown in the Statement of Financial Activities and Balance Sheet on pages 10 and 11. Delivery of the SongMaps Rye public programme of workshops has been supported by reserves from the Bernard Nevill estate, grants received from Chalk Cliff Trust, Arts Council England and private donors and supporters.

The Charity works on a project-funded basis and usually holds a low level of unrestricted reserves to ensure that it can meet its annual administrative expenses. Unrestricted reserves at the end of the year were low at £74 (previous year 2024: £3,888). We are confident that the ongoing fundraising activities will increase reserves over the next year or two.

The accounts have been produced on a going concern basis, with the Charity having the ability to continue to carry out its commitments and obligations.

Structure, governance and management

Governing Document

The organisation is a company limited by guarantee, incorporated on 8 November 2013. The company was established under a Memorandum of Association which established the objects and powers of the charitable company and is governed under its Articles of Association. In the event of the company being wound up members are required to contribute an amount not exceeding £1.

Directors

At the date of this report, there are three directors: Susan Benn (Chair) Eva de Blocq van Kuffeler Katherine Gardiner

The directors are also charity trustees for the purposes of charity law. A list of those who were directors during the year or who served up to the date of this report is set out on page 2.

Organisational Structure

StrongBack’s activities are implemented by an artistic director and a project manager working on a parttime freelance basis. The artistic director engages practitioners and contributors on a freelance basis for specific projects, builds strategic partnerships, is responsible for administration, fundraising and artistic direction of each project. The artistic director provides management, training and oversight of the project manager/asst. administrator. The project manager is responsible for all social media and press and communications and supports the activities of the artistic director in a wide range of tasks.

The artistic director contributes on average 8 days per month pro-bono to the organisation.

Trustees’ Report

The trustees meet as required to discuss and further the work of the company while individual trustees collaborate with the artistic director in shaping projects and managing the financial business of the company. The meetings have an agenda and minutes are taken.

Company law requires the Board to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of the affairs of the company as at the balance sheet date and of its incoming resources and application of resources, including income and expenditure, for the financial year. In preparing those financial statements, the company should follow best practice and:

• select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;

• observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP;

• make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

• state whether any applicable UK accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and

• prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is not appropriate to assume that the company will continue on that basis.

The Board is responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that are sufficient to show and explain the charitable company’s transactions, disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the company and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006 and the provisions of the Charity’s constitution. The Board is also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Small Company Exemptions

This report is prepared in accordance with the provisions of the Companies Act 2006 relating to small companies.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of StrongBack Productions Limited Charity number 1167818, Company number 08767837

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 30 November 2025, which are set out on pages 10 to 16.

Responsibilities and basis of the report

As the charity’s trustees of the Company (who are also the directors of the company for the purpose of company law), you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (“the 2006 Act”).

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited for this year under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity’s accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (“the 2011 Act”). In carrying out my examination, I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiner’s statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that:

• accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 386 of the Companies Act 2006; or

• the accounts do not accord with such record; or

• the accounts do not comply with relevant accounting requirements under section 396 of the Companies Act 2006 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

• the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS102).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1. Accounting policies

1.1 General information

StrongBack Productions Limited is a company limited by guarantee (Company no 08767837) and a registered Charity, incorporated and registered in England and Wales (Charity no 1167817).

In the event of the Charity being wound up, the liability in respect of the guarantee is limited to £1 per member of the Charity.

The address of the registered office is given on page 2. The nature of the Charity’s operations and principal activities are detailed in the Trustees’ Report.

1.2 Basis of preparing the financial statements

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (FRS 102) applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland, the Charities Act 2011 and the UK Generally Accepted Practice as it applies from January 2015.

The Charity meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS102.

The accounts are drawn up on the historical cost basis of accounting.

The accounts have been prepared on a going concern basis. The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties that call into doubt the ability of the Charity to continue as a going concern. The total incoming resources for the year have been derived from the principal activity undertaken wholly in the UK.

1.2. Income

All income is included in the Statement of Financial Activities when the Charity is legally entitled to the income after any performance conditions have been met, the amount can be measured reliably and it is probable that the income will be received.

Grants, donations and legacies

Grants and donations are recognised in incoming sources in the year in which they are receivable except as follows:

• when donors specify that grants/donations given to the charity must be used in future accounting periods, the income is deferred until those periods

• when donors impose conditions which have to be fulfilled before the charity becomes entitled to use such income, the income is deferred and not included in incoming resources until the preconditions for use are met.

Charitable activities

Earned income - income from the box office, performance fees and sundry other theatrical income is included in incoming resources in which the relevant show takes place.

1.3 Expenditure

All expenditure is included when a liability has been incurred.

1.4 Fund accounting

Unrestricted funds which are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the Charity and which have not been designated for other purposes.

Restricted funds are funds which are to be used in accordance with specific restrictions imposed by the donors, or which have been raised by the Charity for particular purposes. The aim and use of the restricted funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements.

1.5 Debtors

Debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered.

1.6 Cash at bank and in hand

Cash at bank and in hand includes cash and short term highly liquid investments with a short maturity of three months or less from the date of acquisition or opening of the deposit or similar account.

1.7 Creditors

Creditors are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors are normally recognised at their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts due.

1.8 Taxation

The charity is an exempt charity within the meaning of schedule 3 of the Charities Act 2011 and is considered to pass the tests set out in Paragraph 1 Schedule 6 Finance Act 2010 and therefore it meets the definition of a charitable company for UK corporation tax purposes.

Gift aid and other reclaimable tax is allocated to the same income heading as the related income.

Irrecoverable VAT is allocated to the same cost heading as the related expenditure.

1.9 Financial instruments

The Charity only holds basic financial instruments. Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at transaction value and subsequently measured at their settlement value.
