## **Achievements and Performance**

The financial year ending 30 November 2024 marks StrongBack’s 11[th] year of activity.

## **Projects:** _**Come On In**_

## **Baytree Centre poetry workshops**

With support from London Community Fund, we delivered the 2[nd] and final edition of the 12-week programme of poetry workshops for 9- to 12-year-olds. The programme was based on lead producer Sally Wood’s 1[st] edition and amended to suit slightly younger participants. The workshops were delivered by Sally along with award winning poets Courtney Roberts and Laila Sumpton. Once again, the workshops were very well received and appreciated by the young girls, family members and the Directors of the Baytree Centre. Project management was shared between Sally Wood and Natasha Solano. A final report was submitted to London Community Fund.

## _**SongMaps Rye**_

Our pilot project of 2023 generated a methodology for harnessing engagement in communities driven by the arts, along with a clearly articulated manifesto for building resilience to climate change in Rye. The ideas generated in the pilot programme, phase 1 of _SongMaps Rye,_ served as leverage for the artistic director to meet with a number or organization leaders in Sussex and at Glyndebourne opera and explore future partnerships along the route towards phase three, the delivery of a Public Programme of workshops titled _SongMaps Rye_ in 2025.

An advisory group of participants from the pilot project came together with the artistic director, the chair of StrongBack Productions and new Trustee from Rye, Dominic Manning, to drive the project towards Phase 2, **Research Development and Creation.** The main recommendations of the group were that StrongBack should build strong local partnerships and conduct meaningful research and development with community leaders and local expertise to design a programme of workshops and a festival for Rye.

StrongBack Productions was subsequently invited to submit a proposal to a private estate fund that was keen to support projects focused on Trees and Music. Our proposal was awarded support of £40K from the estate of deceased artist, designer and antiques collector Bernard Nevill.

## **Phase 2: Research Development and Creation.**

Building on outcomes and partnerships from Phase 1, we assembled a creative team made up of StrongBack Productions – Susan Benn, Dominique Le Gendre and Sally Wood - and participants and partners in phase 1: Lucy Bowyer environmental scientist and conservationist; S. Morgan poet, writer and Bumble Bee conservationist; James Stewart, Editor of Rye News; Graham Ellis, Circus director and vice chair of Tilling Green Residents Association; Dan Lake, Chair of Tilling Green Residents Association and disability activist; Ben Boucherat, Bernard Nevill Estate Fund advisor.

## **Trustees’ Report**

## **for the year ended 30 November 2024**

Over five months, the team met regularly, building partnerships with organisations providing services at the Tilling Green Community Centre and more widely across Rye. As a result of these meetings, and with information based on a survey carried out in partnership with Southern Housing, StrongBack identified gaps in provision of high-quality arts-led and multi-disciplinary participatory workshops for all ages along with potential demand for such provision.

A full Public Programme of workshops and activities was designed by the creative team. The programme of free workshops, based at Tilling Green Community Centre is aimed at all age groups: Families with children, Primary school children, young people aged 11-18, Mixed Adults and the university of the third age.

Workshops have been designed to correspond with the seasons and connect with celebratory activities in Rye. Participants will see that the skills acquired in workshops address local issues, celebrate their achievements and are showcased through a range of public platforms: exhibitions in Rye Train station, participation in Rye’s Fêtes, festivals and parades, publication of an anthology of poems, articles and blogs in Rye News.

Alongside the programme of workshops, a new opera will be developed by artistic director and composer Dominique Le Gendre in collaboration with James Stewart of Rye News and the podcast Rye Cast. The Opera, _Chronicles of Rye_ , will tell stories of Rye from the perspectives of the people and the natural environment. Partnerships with appropriate production companies will be sought to take this forward.

Funding applications to support the third phase of _SongMaps Rye,_ delivery of the Public Programme of workshops were submitted to Arts Council England, Sussex Community Fund, The Chalk Cliff Trust and patrons of StrongBack Productions between October and November 2024. The results are expected from December 2024.

## **Fundraising and reporting**

Funding for the 2[nd] edition of the Baytree workshops received in January 2023 was allocated as per the budget and has now come to an end.

Support for Phase 2: Research, Development and Creation of _SongMaps Rye_ was awarded by the estate of Bernard Nevill and funds were received in March 2024. It has become increasingly rare to secure support for this vital stage of building viable projects and StrongBack is immensely grateful for this support. The funds covered fees for all members of the research and development team, travel, subsistence, participation in the survey conducted by Southern Housing along with StrongBack’s ongoing administrative and core costs, marketing and website updates.

The artistic director has continued to contribute significant pro-bono time towards the ongoing research and partnership building required to sustain the project’s medium-term viability.

## **Training, Marketing and IT support**

The Charity has maintained online presence and visibility through social media and regular website updates. While no specialised training was delivered over the financial year to November 30 2024, Producer Sally Wood continues as lead producer on the Baytree workshop programme as curator, project designer and coordinator with mentorship and oversight provided by the artistic director. IT support was provided by the charity’s IT consultant on a pro-bono basis.

## **StrongBack Productions, 11 Years of activity**

The end of this financial year, 30 November 2024 marks eleven years of activity. Since 2018, the charity has focused its activities on bringing poetry and music into everyday life to reflect communities to themselves and to the wider world. Our partnership with Speaking Volumes has made this a realistic and viable programme.

As noted in previous annual reports, the impact of the pandemic years of 2020-2021 continued into 2024. Funding for the arts has become increasingly competitive with fewer funding streams and many organisations folding. Funding bodies continue to address the cost-of-living crisis and focus their criteria away from the arts and from London and towards underserved communities across the UK with climate change, sustainability and social justice as priorities. StrongBack continues to adapt so that projects bring artists and local residents together with experts to share learning and to reflect local concerns and ambitions through participation in collective creativity.

Since 2013, StrongBack has issued **45 artist commissions**

Worked with: **283** performers, directors, designers, lighting designers, writers, musicians, composers, poets, filmmakers and **77** production and technical facilitators.

Our performances and events have reached **4,000** live audience members. Workshops and talks have attracted **260 participants.** Our online audience hovers between **1,500- 1,800**

Collaborations with **: Rich Mix, Brixton East, Ovalhouse, Berwick Record Office, The Maltings Theatre and Cinema Berwick-upon-Tweed, Tara Arts, Migration Museum, Imperial War Museum, The British Library, Speaking Volumes, Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, The Baytree Centre, Loughborough Farm, Photofusion, Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, 3Space International House, Brixton Project, London Festival of Architecture, Tilling Green Residents Association, Rye News.**

Individual donors: **Bernardine Evaristo, Hassan Mahamdallie, Linda Bretton, David Tobin, Jo-anne Ferguson John, Karen and Andy Martinez-Lambert, Mitra Tabriziani, Peter Doig** , **KK Charity, Charities Trust, Lord Joicey, StrongBack’s benefactor and several donors who wish to remain anonymous.**

Since 2013, StrongBack has operated on a project funded basis and created projects that have engaged with a range of communities across London, in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland and Rye, East Sussex. These communities include women’s groups in the Bangladeshi Community; young people between the ages of 8-17 of all ethnicities; British-Caribbean people between the ages of 18-84; White British audiences and participants aged 10-90; audiences of all ethnicities aged 10-90.

StrongBack has created unique performances, events, workshops and talks employing artists from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicities and age-groups. Performances and events have brought into focus aspects of culture, heritage and daily life that are not usually included in the overall picture of culture and arts and as a result have contributed to the respective community’s sense of self, presence and belonging.

StrongBack’s artist commissions, mentorships and training-on-the-job have especially boosted the confidence of young, less experienced artists, offering them opportunities to lead on curation, project design and coordination thus gaining experience as well as making the necessary mistakes in a supportive environment. StrongBack has encouraged and supported emerging artists to seek further education and /or follow their artistic path. Many participants and artists have repeatedly stressed the welcome benefits conferred by our projects to their sense of self and of place, including a deeper understanding of the interconnection of cultures and history in contemporary Britain. Audience feedback over the ten-year period confirms an overwhelming appreciation of our presentations. StrongBack’s projects are important markers that validate the contributions of lesser-known artists and lead to a gradual acceptance of difference.

2024 marks the 2[nd ] phase of StrongBack’s _SongMaps Rye_ project as the charity establishes a presence beyond London. Successful funding applications should ensure that from March 2025, phase 3 will see the delivery of 12 months of workshops based in Tilling Green in Rye and facilitated by arts and environmental science educators from Rye, East Sussex and London.

StrongBack will nurture collaborations with science, conservation, local artists and legal frameworks, supporting the aims of the project to unlock the potential therein through learning and adapting to change via collective creativity. We will apply this learning across live and digital online platforms, peerto-peer forums and artistic events and performances that leave a legacy of agency, skills, partnership and collaboration for the common good.
