Objectives & Activities
Summary of the Objects of the Charity as set out in its Governing Document

To advance the Sikh religion for the public benefit by educating people about the Sikh religion through the provision of access to a library with books on the Sikh religion, the teaching of kirtan, the teaching of the Guru Granth Sahib and in such other ways as the trustees from time to time may think fit.

To advance the education of the public in the Punjabi language.
Summary of the Main Activities Undertaken for the Public Benefit in Relation to the Charity's Objects
Activities undertaken to meet our objectives:
Activities for Objective-1:

Continued our regular term-time Kirtan and Santhiya classes and encouraged students to do kirtan at our regular Sunday slot at Guru Nanak Road Gurdwara.

Covered Sikh history and philosophy topics within our weekly Punjabi lessons and assemblies, which were now back to being face-to-face. Encouraged students and young volunteers to participate in assembly either by leading prayers or doing short presentations.

Continued the ‘Dastaar Scheme’ designed to encourage students to wear turbans as it is a key part of the Sikh identity.

Purchased books about Sikhi to distribute and sell to our students.

Shared useful Sikhi-related resources and events with pupils, parents, and volunteers.

Invited an external guest to speak at the Summer Programme in July 2023 to inspire students to carry out seva (selfless service) and connect with their heritage.

Held a wellbeing workshop with an external guest in November 2023, which included elements of Sikh spirituality.

Held a Gurmat-based Winter Programme in December 2023 on the theme of “Guru GRanth Sahib Ji” in which each class prepared a presentation and students performed kirtan, amongst other activities.

Took part in the Walk4Sahibzaade initiative in December 2023 for the third year running, to raise awareness of the martyrdom of the Chaar Sahibzaade and build community spirit. This time our volunteers also helped run a Sikh history-based quiz for children up to 16 years.

Took part in a local ‘Sehaj Paatth’ initiative in Ealing, and a Gurmat + Kirtan-based children’s programme in Southall in December 2023.

Some of our volunteers attended the launch event of ‘The Sikh Gramophone Collection’ in March 2024, focussing on the collation of the very first Keertan recordings from the early 20[th] century, followed by performances from notable Sikh musicians.

Held a fun family quiz in March 2024 which included rounds on Sikhi and Sikh history.

Held a speech competition (Hemkunt Symposium) in March 2024, in which participants aged 6-25 presented speeches about topics related to Sikh history and philosophy.

Prepared students for the Hemkunt Keertan Darbar which was held in April 2024, promoting Sikh devotional music and teachings from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

Supported students to participate in the Hemkunt Foundation’s ‘Panthic Digital Voice’ filmmaking competition based on Sikh philosophy-related topics.

Activities for Objective-2:

Our regular term-time Sunday Punjabi classes continued as per the academic school calendar as well as providing online classes for existing pupils unable to attend in person. Classes were open to students aged 3+, from Punjabi beginners to GCSE and A Level students. The demand for our adult beginners’ class in particular continued to increase.

More of our young volunteers who had completed their Punjabi GCSE and/or A-Level exams started volunteering in teaching Punjabi classes.

Held teacher-training sessions to improve the quality of our Punjabi class provision.

Held parents’ meetings at which we discussed ways to encourage children to speak and engage with their Punjabi mother-tongue more effectively.

Shared useful Punjabi-related resources and events with pupils, parents, and volunteers.

Purchased Punjabi books to distribute and sell to our students.

Encouraged participants in the Hemkunt Symposium (speech competition) in March 2024 to do their speech in Punjabi – although choice of language did not affect their marks, they received an extra gift to incentivise speaking in Punjabi.

Our teachers and young volunteers team attended the Jaag festival in June 2023, a Punjabi and Pahari-Pothwari language and literature festival based in Birmingham.

Annual End-of-Year Punjabi-based programme in July 2023 on the theme of ‘storytelling’, in which all students participated by giving class presentations.

Held a fun family Summer Mela in July 2023 which included elements of Punjabi culture.

Some of our teachers ran workshops/presentations on lesson planning and teaching children with special educational needs at a Punjabi CPD event organised by the Punjabi Learning Academy & Sikh Education Council in July 2023.

Our GCSE and A Level Punjabi students achieved top grades in their Summer 2023 board exams. The other students sat internal end-of-year exams to consolidate their knowledge.

The trustees declare that they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the commission in exercising their powers or duties.
Summary of the Main Achievements of the Charity for the Year

Successful running of term-time weekly Panjabi, Kirtan and Sikhi classes catering for 100-150 students and giving many parents and volunteers the opportunity to give back to their community. All activities were successfully shifted back to being face-to-face as pandemic restrictions had eased, with the option to join online for those who lived further away.

Annual whole-school winter and summer programmes for which each class gave presentations about Sikhi (winter) and Punjabi (summer) to celebrate and showcase our students’ learning.

Students successfully completing their Punjabi GCSE and A-Level exams in Summer 2023.

Extra events outside weekly lessons, such as quizzes, competitions, and workshops, to encourage students to learn about Sikhi, improve their Punjabi language skills, and improve their public speaking and other soft skills.

Our volunteers team won multiple awards at the Southall Community Awards evening in November 2023.
