## **ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF ORANGUTAN VETERINARY AID FOR THE PERIOD ENDING 31/03/2023** Achievements of the charity during the year 1/4/2022 to 31/3/2023 The charity received an income of £37,110.00 during this year. The charity has made actual donations totalling £30,349.00 but this does not include additional equipment items totalling approximately £6000 received gratis from benefactors. The charity also still holds a reserve stock of veterinary equipment and consumables. 2022 finally saw the post pandemic return of travel options to Indonesia and two trips to Indonesia were made by the charity co-founders enabling the charity to take long awaited donations of equipment and medicines as well as undertaking a veterinary mentoring role in Sumatra for one month in July/ August and facilitating and supervising a veterinary dental workshop in November / December. The charity continues to function with no salaries being paid and the Trustees are pleased to report that administrative costs excluding travel costs remain at less than 1% of the income. During this financial year the charity has received no grants or legacies and continues to function on funds generated by its supporters. ## DONATIONS. The charity has made substantial donations throughout this financial year. Donations of funds and equipment have specifically been made to: Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) - Digital dental x-ray system (£5,500) Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme - Digital dental x-ray system / air driven dental unit / dental instruments / replacement patient monitor / anaesthetic machine maintenance (£ 15,500) International Animal Rescue Project Borneo Sumatran Rescue Alliance (SRA) Orangtan Information Centre (OIC) In addition the charity was able to attend the annual Orangutan Advisory Group Workshop & Conference in Yogjakarta taking approximately 150kg of medicines and equipment (£4000) which was distributed to total of 27 orangutan and wildlife rescue / rehabilitation centres. ## EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE The charity funds an equipment maintenance scheme for various orangutan rescue centres and in this financial year replaced a critical patient care monitor for the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme in addition to providing maintenance / replacement parts for its anaesthetic machine. Two anaesthetic vaporisers returned from Indonesia have been fully refurbished and re-calibrated in readiness for exchanges in 2023. ## TRAINING The charity has continued its efforts to assist with the training of the veterinary teams at the rescue centres and recognises this as an extremely valuable, efficient and increasingly important aspect of its work. In July 2022 at the request of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme the co-founders Dr Nigel Hicks and Sara Fell Hicks undertook a one month residency at the Batu Mbelin rescue centre near Medan, Nth Sumatra to assist both the veterinary team and the nursing team with practical and academic training. In November / December the charity sourced and funded a specialist veterinary wildlife dentist to travel to Sumatra for a two week practical and academic dental training workshop at which 16 orangutan received dental attention and 6 Indonesian veterinary surgeons received expert training. ## BRONWYN/WATSON SCHOLARSHIP During 2022 following the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainties of forward planning during the second half of 2021 the Bronwyn Watson Scholarship was again postponed. It is anticipated that the scholarship will resume in 2024 dependant on availability of university institutions being available to accept scholarship candidates. The charity has retained sufficient funding to complete the scholarships in a secondary bank account. ## FUNDRAISING The charity is extremely grateful to its supporters worldwide. No specific fundraising campaign was initiated in this financial year but the charity was able to re-instate its annual fundraising tour. 8 supporters travelled with the co-founders to Sumatra and approximately £14,500 was raised by their fundraising efforts. In total the charity has received £36,776.00 in donations in the last financial year and these have been sufficient for us to continue and expand our work as planned. The charity has sufficient reserves for the forthcoming financial year. The worldwide pandemic negatively impacted the charity’s income and capabilities in 2020 / 2021 but the Trustees are pleased to report a slight recovery in income but a very positive increase in the charity’s activities and influence during the last financial year. The Trustees have acknowledged the very positive effects of the charity’s innovative training programmes in 2021 and 2022 and recognise that this is an important and valuable charity function. Whilst the charity will continue its core activities of providing essential equipment during the forthcoming year it will also be planning another important in-situ training opportunity for Indonesian and Malaysian wildlife veterinarians delivering a multi disciplinary workshop on anaesthesia , dentistry and cardiology.
