Our objectives and activities
Friends Objectives
The Friends of King’s College London Maths School is a CIO established to advance the education of pupils in King’s College London Maths School, in particular by:
- (1) Providing facilities or equipment which are not normally provided by the Education Funding Agency;
(2) Developing effective relationships between the staff, parents, and others associated with the school;
- (3) Providing additional support and services to students who are in need of assistance.
Friends Activities 2023-2024
In 2023-24, Friends supported these objectives through the following activities:
-
King’s Kulture ensured that every student in the school had the opportunity to attend at least two cultural experiences. Following the experience, all students wrote a short review of their experience - they paid in words, not money.
-
A bespoke WeSpeak programme for KCLMS
-
We continued to fund a Learning Mentor to work with students on a one-to-one or small group basis to improve their learning behaviours and literacy. This specific and individualised intervention is key to our students fulfilling their full academic potential and developing their learning as widely as possible.
-
We continued to fund specific pastoral interventions from the Lead Teachers to work with individual students who have particular needs. These interventions can be for a short period or more ongoing.
-
We sponsored evening events, including the November Curry/Pizza, February Bingo, and a summer prom for Y13 students.
-
We sponsored race entries for Chase the Moon in November and the Victoria Park Race in March.
Achievements and performance
- For King’s Kulture, Students attended events ranging from ballet to drill music, from a Studio Ghibli adaptation to classical music in a nightclub. 92% of the students attended at least one event, with over 500 tickets in total.
Students received all tickets free of charge and wrote reflective reviews afterwards to critically evaluate the culture they experienced. We focused in particular on ensuring that disadvantaged students were given a range of opportunities, and tailored our provision accordingly.
- King’s Maths School students took part in the We Speak programme in Spring 2022. Ten students signed up and 8 students completed the programme.
The students increased their speaking confidence by 33% on average over the course of a 4-week online programme. The students worked with Investec, HSBC, Just Eat, and Dojo mentors, who gave personalised feedback and guidance.
Overall confidence grew by 33%.
In addition, the students’ confidence increased in a range of employment-related scenarios:
-
29% more confident speaking to a group of employers
-
19% more confident speaking to employers on a video call
■ 20% more confident speaking in a job interview.
-
The specific and individualised intervention of the Learning Mentor is key to each of our students fulfilling their full academic potential and developing their learning as widely as possible. These interventions are subject to feedback from students via student surveys.
-
The pastoral intervention from the Lead Teachers is subject to student feedback via student surveys.
-
Parents, Carers and Students attended the Curry/Pizza Event, Bingo and Prom events
Financial review
Financially, our income (fundraising and donations) exceeded our outgoings. Our surplus is being deposited into our HSBC Community Account.
The Friends are in a solid position to support future requests for financial assistance from the school as they arise.
There are no uncertainties about the Friends continuing as a going concern.
Structure, governance and management
The Friends of KCLMS is a CIO governed by its ‘Foundation’ Constitution and registered as a charity with the Charity Commission.
As set out in the Constitution, trustees are appointed for a term of two years by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charity trustees. In selecting individuals for appointment as charity trustees, the charity trustees must have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the CIO.
