Our objectives and activities
Friends Objectives
The Friends of King’s College London Maths School is a CIO established to advance the education of pupils in King’s College London Maths School, in particular by:
(1) Providing facilities or equipment which are not normally provided by the Education Funding Agency; (2) Developing effective relationships between the staff, parents, and others associated with the school;
(3) Providing additional support and services to students who are in need of assistance.
Friends Activities 2021-2022
In 2021-22 Friends supported these objectives through the following activities:
-
King’s Kulture ensured that every student in the school had the opportunity to attend at least two cultural experiences. Following the experience, all students wrote a short review of their experience - they paid in words, not money.
-
A year 13 outing to Bushcraft Penhurst. Due to Covid, the year 13s did not have this activity in 2020, and the budget was reallocated to other activities.
-
A bespoke WeSpeak programme for KCLMS working with mentors from a top employer
-
We continued to fund a Learning Mentor to work with students on a one-to-one or small group basis to improve their learning behaviours and literacy. This specific and individualised intervention is key to our students fulfilling their full academic potential and developing their learning as widely as possible.
-
We continued to fund specific pastoral interventions from the Lead Teacher of Sixth Form to work with individual students who have particular needs. These interventions can be for a short period or more ongoing.
-
We sponsored evening events at the school, including the November Curry Quiz, February Bingo, and a July Celebration for Y13 students.
Achievements and performance
-
For King’s Kulture, Students attended a full symphony orchestra, an international collaboration between a Senegalese and Cuban musician, two plays at the National Theatre, solo piano by a classical musician of colour, a film at the BFI, and the England men’s football team match at Wembley. 79% of the students attended at least one event.
-
The WeSpeak programme helped equip students with skills and confidence
-
The specific and individualised intervention of the Learning Mentor is key to each of our students fulfilling their full academic potential and developing their learning as widely as possible. These interventions are subject to feedback from students via student surveys.
-
The pastoral intervention from the Lead Teacher of Sixth Form is subject to student feedback via student surveys.
-
Parents, Carers and Students attended the Curry Quiz, Bingo and Celebration events
Financial review
Financially, our income (fundraising and donations) exceeded our outgoings. Our surplus is on deposit at our HSBC Community Account.
The Friends are in a solid position to support future requests for financial assistance from the school as they arise.
There are no uncertainties about the Friends continuing as a going concern.
Structure, governance and management
The Friends of KCLMS is a CIO governed by its ‘Foundation’ Constitution and registered as a charity with the Charity Commission.
As set out in the Constitution, trustees are appointed for a term of two years by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charity trustees. In selecting individuals for appointment as charity trustees, the charity trustees must have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the CIO.
