qOYALDART YOUTH SAILINGTRUST ROYAL DART YOUTH SAILING TRUST Registered Charity Number: 1167579 ANNUAL REPORT AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS Period l January 2024 to 31 December 2024 Royal Dart Youth Sailing Trust Trustses Report for the Calendar Year 2024 2024 was the eigth year since the RDYST was founded with the principal objective to provide opportunities for less privileged local school children to enjoy water-based activities on the River Dart. Providing new, and life enhancing, experiences on the ter involves Gonsiderable resources, induding all the necessary health and safety training, experienced instructors, RYA support and, of course, fully maintained sailing boats and associated equipment. So. it is pleasing to report thal the Summer of 2024 was a considerable success on many fronts with over 350 young girls and boys experiencing the joys and excitement of the beautiful River Dart, often for the firsl time. The core activity was. once again, the annual Schools I18k8 programme held over three weèks in July, following four'tasterf Tuesdays in June. Groups of up to 12 Year 6 children were introduced lo sailing in the Trust's Quest dinghies, taught by our team of young instructors under the RYA Youth Sailing scheme. Around 220 children from six local schools enjoyed their initial sailing experience. The youngsters were encouraged lo take the helm and sail the boats themselves under dose supeNision. The RDYC safety support boats were in dose proximity to help as required. 15 young adults from Dartmouth Academy Secondary spent a challenging week away from home on the sail training yacht 'Prolific', departing from Poole to Brixham via Weymouth. The condition3 were quite rough at times and according to their teachers this was not only a great exercAse in team building but also a positive life changing eventl
In 2024 saw the RDYST continue the exciting new programme called COTS, Career Opportunities Through Sailing. This provided opportunities forfour local children, tho would otherwise be unable to do so, to undertake the RYA sailing courses vthich they will complete over a number of years, opening the way to use these skills as a summer job or for further training for a variety of marine industry careers. In September we rounded off the season V•ith 64 Year 7 Dartmouth Academy pupils enjoying a half day's paddle boarding instnjction and a similar number of Year 7s enjoying a half day leaming how to kayak. Both events were a huge success and are planned to be repealed this year. Something new for 2024, supported by the Devon Environmental Foundation, was a greater environmental awareness we brought to all of our sessions. This was in conjunctFon with the RYA 'Green Blue Pledge, and our intention was to raise awareness and educate the young Dart River boat users in the best practice that can be adopted to protect our marine and inland waters to safeguard the wildlife and habitst. The various aGtivities included specific environmental wort(sheets. engagement by the environmental Group 'Friends of the Dart, beach cleans and the ard 'Environmental Custodian of the Yearf. This successful activity, which was embraced by all participants will be built on during 2025. As well as the many volunteers and sailing instructors involved. the RDYST receives invaluable support from the Royal Dart Yacht Club and the use of the Club's facilities both ashore and afloat. These are essential towards providing the many exciting experiences for local less advantaged school children. The Trust would like to thank the many volunteers, sailing instructors and Trustees for the time and effort they put in to achieve tha great results as describéd above. The Trust is also indebted to the many generous donations from individuals, family Charitable Trusts, Rockfish restauranls, Devon Environmental Foundation, Dartmouth United Charities and other local businesses, without whose support we could not operate.. In condusion. it is pleasing to report that 2024 proved to be another very successful year for the Trust over 350 school children participating, many of Orn had never previousty had the opportunity to participate in vraler sports on our lovely river.
