## **ROYAL DART YOUTH SAILING TRUST** **Registered Charity Number : 1167579** # **ANNUAL REPORT AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS Period 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2022** ## **Trustees Report for the Calendar Year 2022** 2022 was the sixth year since the RDYST was founded with the principal objective to provide opportunities for less privileged local school children to enjoy water-based activities on the River Dart. Providing new, and life enhancing, experiences on the water involves considerable resources, including all the necessary health and safety training, experienced instructors, RYA support and, of course, fully maintained sailing boats and associated equipment. So, it is pleasing to report that the Summer of 2022 was a considerable success on many fronts with over 200 young girls and boys experiencing the joys and excitement of the beautiful River Dart. The highlight was, once again, the annual Schools Weeks programme held over three weeks in July, following four ‘taster’ Tuesdays in June. Around 150 children from six local schools enjoyed their initial sailing experience on the Trust owned Quest sailing dinghies. Qualified instructors were aboard each dinghy and youngsters were encouraged to take the helm and sail the boats themselves under close supervision. The RDYC safety support boats were in close proximity to help as required. The second highlight was probably a first experience of paddle boarding for 65 youngsters, which was organised by the Trust and generously funded by Dartmouth Mayflower400. Other initiatives during the Summer involved the sponsorship of two youngsters aboard the sail training vessel ‘Pegasus’ in the 2022 Classic Channel race from Dartmouth to Paimpol. Another two local children were sponsored by the Trust to participate fully in the RDYC junior summer sailing programme. The only disappointment was the late cancellation of five days aboard the sail training vessel, ‘Prolific’, due to one of the professional crew contracting Covid-19. Two youngsters, however, were able to go on the rearranged voyage over the October half term. Looking ahead to 2023, the RDYST is planning to continue the many initiatives and also launch an exciting new programme called COTS, Career Opportunities Through Sailing. This will provide opportunities for local children, who would otherwise be unable to do so, to undertake the complete RYA sailing instructors’ courses over a number of years, opening the way to further training for a variety of marine industry careers. As well as the many volunteers and sailing instructors involved, the RDYST receives invaluable support from the Royal Dart Yacht Club and the use of the Club’s facilities both ashore and afloat. These are essential towards providing the many exciting experiences for local less advantaged school children. The Trust is also indebted to the many generous donations from individuals, family Charitable Trusts and local businesses, such as £1 voluntary donations from Rockfish customers. In conclusion, it is pleasing to report that 2022 proved to be another very successful year for the Trust with over 200 school children participating.
