Self Care Week
This has been another good year for the Self Cafe Fonjm. despite the pandemic conttnuing to limit
personal contact and the ne￿sIty for us to continue working and meeting reTnOtety.
The jewel in the Forum's crown remain5 Self Care Week, whth has become an established public
health initiative, raising the benefits of self czre.
Despite the conbnuing challenges of the pandem￿, SCW tcM)k Pl￿ this year bebveen 15-21
November on the theme 'Practise Sew Care for Life, wrth more than 800 indtviduals and
organisations taking part. While the total number of parbcipants vrds down slightly on 12sI year, il
was encouraging to see greater partiGipation by organisattons in Northem Ireland, ScoUand and
Wales than in p￿VIouS years. More than 30 intefflatronal organisations took part from Canada,
Australia, the USA and Afn"ca.
More than 400 NHS organisations, with a UK4￿de reach of approximatety 35 million, got involved in
2021., in total, SCW 2021 had 56 nats.onal partner organisabons. And while natsonal Govid-19
restr￿lonS were more relaxed than in 2020, local organisations were sts"Il reti￿￿1 in holding the kind
of full scale events we saw pre-pandemic.
Given the challenges of the last ￿¥0 years, f( was unsurprising that mentsl wellbeing was again the
lop self c2re message being promoted during the week. Overall. the campaign achieved more than
110 rtems of local news coverage. including broadcast media. while the Forum's online programme
achieved 195,OCX) impressions and more than 100.tK)O page view5.
Activty during the week On￿ again hwjhlighted that the Fomm's organisation of SCW often goes
unappreciated,. given the health and care engagemenL many believe the Week is organised by the
NHS. The vital Gontribub"on and suppjrt of sponsors HARTMANN and the Intematsonal Self Care
Foundatson is therefore recognised and appreciated.
Self Care Innovation Awards
Running as part of the work that culminates in Self Care Week. the FoTum Lx)ntinues to recognise
excellence in support for self cAre wtth tts annual Awards programme.
The Awards were renamed in 2021. and the Overall Winner and the four Highly Commended
entries were announced during SCW. The judges, including representstives from the World Health
Organvzation and NHS England. decided that Orthopaedic Research UK'S ESCAPE-pain campaign
was a worthy winner. The lop eight entries were showcased as part of the prornotions during Self
Care Week.

Website
We began 2021 a complete revision of our antN]uated, but important website. The website,
which hosts the Fonjm's collection of setf care best practi￿ examples as well as its Fact Sheets,
receives more than a quarter of a fflillion hits a year. As a resou￿ tt is unique in the a￿a of self
care, and is link￿ to other srtes acr05S the NHS and beyond.
Working with developers Buzzbox. the webstte has upgraded securtty and functions on all
platFomis. including mobile phones_ It is notable that all previous links. so vital for a resource
website, were retained in the revamp. The process woukl not have been achieved for the relatively
rnodest amount it cost thut the work of the PresKlent and the Secretary. assisted by other
Trustees.
Fact Sheets
The Fact Sheets remain an important element of ￿[v￿rk and the one which is most directy patient
and public facsng. Fact Sheets on a wde range of self care subjects are available on the SCF
websrte for downloading and use by health professionals as part of self care aware consultations.
The Forum continues lo be grateful from the input of its mutbdisciplinary Board of Trustees for their
diligence in prc#lucing these resources for protessionals and p*ents.
During 2021, the development and publical.on of new Fact Sheets have ￿mented the Se
Care Forum's reputation in the field. For the Fact Sheet on Long Covid. the Forum worked with the
national Long Covid Group. In The Power of Self Care on Wellbeing, the Fonjm pulled together all
the major national setf ￿re programmes into one dlge5tjb￿ Sou￿.
As a result of publicity generated from this activTty in 2021, we are now producing tsvo further
factsheels- on Conjunctivits's and the Menopause- supported by devek)pment grants.
National TV exposure
The Forum's work was the subject of nation81 b￿akfast television coverage, vth praise for its work
from TV doctor Df Nighat Arif, who subsequenty agreed to be(x)me a patron of the charity.
Funding ourwork
Day to day funding for the work of the Self Care Forum continues to crcupy the Board of Trustees
on a regular basis. Collaborab'on with commercial and representstive organisations has resulted in
sufficient income to keep the Forum going, run a successful Setf Care Week, and continue to
maintain and office function which supports our p2bent 2nd public-facing and professional work.
We are grateful to HARTMANN. mDigttal and the Intemational Setf ca￿ Federalion for their
support. We continue to Wotk wrth the Royal PhaTmaceutiGal Society, for whom we have arranged
teaching sessions based on the Fact Sheels for the Community Phamiacy Consultation Service.
This woth, which will supwrt the devek)prnent of the Conjunctivitis Fact Sheet in particular, will
continue in 2022. A Fact Sheet on the Menopause is CUTrenUy in preparat￿n at the request of the
NHS National Menopause Group.
In the meantime, we are exploring attemative meth¢)ds of recetving fvnding. While the approaches
so far are relatNely modesL rt is an imFX)rlant part of our strategy to survive and grow the work of
the Foruin that we use every opportunity to solicit donations, including frorn individuals, throL¢gh
donate buttons of our website, Amazon Smile and Don't Send me a Card.
