Lifting of covid restrictions and return of players to band activities

Due to the lifting of Covid restrictions during the year, band rehearsals became easier to manage. Players who had been unable to attend regularly during 2021-2022 resumed rehearsals.

We returned to playing at a variety of different events and having our performances enjoyed by very many people. Events which stood out were playing on the bandstand at Victoria Park with Blackley Band, the Jubilee event at Heaton and the Garden Party at Bosley. We successfully returned to playing at smaller venues with small groups of players. Perhaps most memorable was our return to the Whit Friday marches, including being the first band to play at Delph for three years. The band also won their very first award for performing at this event - we presented commemorative trophies to the bass section to mark their well-earned achievement at Denton.

New rehearsal venue

Morton Hall had hosted our rehearsals throughout the covid period, and we appreciated their readiness to put all the necessary precautions into place to welcome us. Unfortunately, in May it was announced that the Hall would be closing in July 2022. As a result, the band moved to rehearse at Beech Hall School on a temporary basis until a new venue could be found.

Towards the end of this reporting year arrangements were made to rehearse permanently at St John’s Church, Macclesfield starting in February 2023.

Resignation of MD and recruitment of new MD

In October our MD Liz Hudson announced her intention to move away from the area, after making a huge contribution to the creation of the band and it’s successful development since 2016. The Trustees launched a thorough and careful recruitment campaign. The happy outcome was that we now have a new MD, Charlotte Danford..

Charlotte worked alongside Liz during a transition period in January and took over as MD after Liz’s departure in February 2023.

I would like to take this opportunity to put on record our gratitude to Liz for all she has done for the band since our inception. We wish her well and look forward to catching up with her later in 2023.

Elan Paton

Chair, Macclesfield Brass July 2023
