The Board of Trustees would like to pass on their thanks and congratulations to both Wendy and Ellen for continuing to build The Purple Penguin Club into the incredible charity it is today. We are also extremely lucky to have a committed and hard-working staff team of supervisors, playworkers and volunteers. The continuing growth in provision with the expanding Sunday Club now means that we can reach more families, children and young people within Barking & Dagenham, giving them much needed respite and support. Our current financial position is enabling us to continually build upon our outstanding staff training and development schedule, as well as organise a range of fun trips and activities for the members. The Board of Trustees are very excited to see the developments in 2024/2025! Purple Penguin Club, The Vibe, 195-211 Becontree Avenue, Dagenham, RM8 ~~|~~ ## **The George Bose Award:** The George Bose trophy is awarded annually to a staff member who goes above and beyond for the benefit of the charity. Last year’s award winner, Aaron King (right) will be presenting to this year’s award winner Fija Khan (Right). She receives this award for the dedication and commitment she has given to Purple Penguin Club since 2021 when she first became employed, Fija is always happy to help and support new staff and volunteers as well as always being keen to complete further training, learn new skills and take on additional responsibility. Fija has recently been promoted into a supervisory role within the organisation. ## **Objectives and Activities** The past year has seen the charity growing steadily, we are now running regular sessions on both Saturdays and Sundays with both clubs running at full capacity. By having 2 clubs we can better meet the individual needs of more children in the borough, with the Sunday group specially designed for those with complex care needs, those who require a calmer and quieter environment and our younger members who require qualified early years staff onsite. Our Saturday group is for our older age group and those who enjoy a more lively, active environment, with Purple Penguin Club, The Vibe, 195-211 Becontree Avenue, Dagenham, RM8 ~~Ee~~ lots of trips offsite to help promote independence and life skills ready for adulthood. We have a strong staff team at both clubs who we are incredibly proud of. We were fortunate enough to offer a variety of day visits and overnight stays in the Summer of 2023 including weekend trips to Lambourne End and a 2-night residential trip to Stubbers Activity Centre, this was made possible thanks to the generous funding received from Essex Youth Trust. We were able to offer many exciting activities to the members including canoeing, climbing, orienteering, pony rides, swimming, and team games. We hope to repeat this in the Summer of 2024. ## **Achievements and Performance** We have continued to build our links and partnerships with The London Borough of Barking & Dagenham staff including the wonderful staff based at the Children and Young People with Disabilities Hub, in addition to the Just Say Parents Forum and of course our friends at AbPhab Youth Club. We continue to receive funding from the Jack Petchey Foundation which allows us to purchase extra equipment and activities which would not otherwise be possible. Over the past year they have part funded trips to Stubbers Purple Penguin Club, The Vibe, 195-211 Becontree Avenue, Dagenham, RM8 ~~|~~ & Lambourne End as well as funding us to purchase a brand new PlayStation 5, controllers and games. They also funded trips to a pizza making workshop at Pizza Express, and the Panto’s at Barking and The Habbit Factory. We are incredibly grateful for their support. Last year’s award winners were: Fiona, **June 2023** Paris, **October 2023** Yasser, **March 2024** During this period, we nominated Sandra Clay (right) for a Jack Petchey Leader award. Sandra is a reliable and dedicated member of our team, and she has worked incredibly hard with one of our members to help increase his confidence which has helped him become more independent. Thanks to this grant funding we have been able to purchase a brand-new PlayStation 5 for the young people at club to enjoy. Purple Penguin Club, The Vibe, 195-211 Becontree Avenue, Dagenham, RM8 ## **Volunteering Project 2023** Our volunteering project, funded by the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy Panel came to an end in November 2023. This project allowed us to better support the volunteers that we have and provides funding for lots of training including accredited first aid training, safeguarding and health and safety training. We had a visit from 3 panel members from the levy panel in May 2023, who were really impressed with the number of volunteers we had recruited into the programme and their outcomes. Many of these volunteers have now become Playworkers within our organisation and we are excited to welcome them to our permanent team. ## **Financial Review** We are finishing the year in a comfortable financial position, which prepares us well for heading into the next year as we have been asked to run additional sessions by the Borough Commissioning Team. Although attracting funding can be challenging; particularly when the effects of the cost-of-living crisis Purple Penguin Club, The Vibe, 195-211 Becontree Avenue, Dagenham, RM8 ~~|~~ is still very much being felt by the majority of people across our community, we are extremely fortunate that we are supported by some amazing charitable trusts including The Jack Petchey Foundation and The Essex Youth Trust. Purple Penguin Club, The Vibe, 195-211 Becontree Avenue, Dagenham, RM8 ## **Looking forward:** We are looking forward to another Stubbers weekend residential trip in August 2024 thanks to part funding from Essex Youth Trust. In addition, we are also planning a weekend residential trip to Lambourne End in June 2024. Due to demand, we shall be increasing the amount of sessions we are running annually from 40 to 46 per year at both clubs, to facilitate this we are re-organising our staff training programme which we hope will provide some greater in-depth learning and CPD challenges for our team. All agreed with bank ststements and account documents including invoices. Read the Annual Trustees, Report which approved the accounts and the Charity's financial position. Requested and received a full list of the Trustees. Examlned a sample month's payroll details for March 2024 and found them to be in good order and agreelng wlth bank statements. Examined the Agenda of the Trustees, meetlngs and the mlnutes of a sample meeting which accorded wlth the Agenda. Examined two sample Manager's Reports presented to the Trustees. Examined two sample Flnanclal Reports presented to the Trustees and noted Important Issues being considered, namely the payment of the age-related statutory minlmum wage; and the salaries to be paid to the two Managers (WD and ES); the setting up of a savings account to maxlmlse Income from any "excess funds that may arise during the course of the year; and possible expansion of the services provlded due to increasing demand from the communlty. Confirmed wlth the Charity Commlssion that the "Carry Forward" from the prevlous year does not quallfy as "income" for the following year, since these accounts are "Receipts and Payments" accounts, not 'Accruals" accounts.
