Report of the Trustees

for the year ended 31 December 2023

The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2023. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Established now for over 12 years, we have grown enormously from those early days into an established and registered Charity at the forefront of animal rescue. With six groups (seven including membership) with membership numbers in the region of 8,000+ (an increase of approx. 500) and working alongside over 900 (an increase of 200), UK and overseas rescues who are registered with us. In these years we have helped hundreds of thousands of animals find their way into new homes and better lives.

Our homecheck and transport groups not only provide rescues with the ability to expand their rehoming areas, but our promptness in getting homechecks and transport runs covered, also means a quicker turnover of rescue spaces - this in turn enables more animals to be saved.

We offer training for new members who have not done homechecks before to ensure we are all carrying them out to the high standard we demand and the rescues expect of us. We successfully trained 116 new homecheckers in 2023, which includes shadowing experienced homecheckers until new members feel confident enough to do them independently. In 2023, 1875 homechecks were attended by trainees alongside an experienced homechecker. We currently have 85 new homecheckers in training.

In addition, we also carry-out assessments of dogs waiting to come into rescue who are being surrendered by their owners.

We also assist pound pullers with transport - these are the people who work tirelessly pulling dogs from death row and finding them rescue spaces and we will often offer financial support for emergency boarding. It's not just dogs … we have homechecked and transported all kinds of furries; including cats, dogs, mice, owls, piglets and goats!

We cover the whole of the UK with our fantastic volunteers - they are really amazing, loyal and dedicated to rescue work. They will drop everything for an emergency and tirelessly give their time for the animals who need them. Our admins, in all our groups, are a wonderful team of volunteers who work from home and give their time, energy and commitment to come to the help of these animals, working very long hours every day.

For another year our FREE services have seen transport and homecheck service requests increase, meaning we are still providing a much-required service for animals across the globe. Assessments saw a decrease which we hope can only be attributed to less people surrendering their animals into rescue.

GROUP 2021 %+ / %- 2022 %+ / %- 2023
Homechecks 4305 Up 22% to 5269 Up 25% to 6614
Transport 491 Up 85% to 909 Up 32% to 1203
Assessment 321 Up 78% to 570 Down 33% to 379

In 2023, our transporters amassed a total of 162,068 miles (a 15% increase on 2022) and transported over 1427 animals (up 57%). These included 44 cats (+ 132%) and 1383 dogs (+ 33%). In addition to the cats and dogs we transported piglets, ferrets, doves and even skunks! We also carried out 379 assessments and celebrate the strength and achievements of this group.

Our Resources group is often the place rescues go when they are struggling to find a home for a particular animal through our Rescue Space Finder group, or if they need our support in other ways. This group is open to the general public and we will assist on any general rescue enquiries. We have helped promote over 2200 animals (+ 120%) from rescue centres looking to be adopted.

Report of the Trustees

for the year ended 31 December 2023

The Charity continues to do its utmost to assist in finding new homes for rescued animals through our social media platforms and hope to reach a greater audience of potential adopters this coming year. Our Facebook pages, groups and our X account continue to grow on a daily basis, with X alone having over 40k followers and our Resources page having 7.9k likes. Social media platforms are directly responsible, through sharing stories, in helping rehome many animals. Our database has increased by 28% to 900 rescues registered.

We continue to build our Foster Register, started as a separate group in 2020 with the support of our approved members. During 2023, we helped 43 animals to go on to a better home.

Fundraising remains a large part of The Animal Team's annual income. Our main sources of income come from our donations and grants. The Charity is dependent upon these donations to finance its work and we are continually challenged to find new ways in which to raise funds and to develop our growth. Our levels of expenditure are reviewed monthly by our Trustees to ensure we remain prudent with expenditure.

Thanks to fundraising efforts we were able to implement a pet foodbank fund which has seen us help the general public, animal charities and foodbanks across the UK provide pet food to those in financial need. We donated over £800 of pet food supplies in 2023.

We are again this year very proud of what we have been able to achieve with the constant support from our volunteers, admin team, rescues and pound pullers. They have allowed and assisted us to continue to maintain the high level of free services we offer to our registered rescues. We are constantly working to review and enhance our procedures, making it easier and more efficient for everyone and of course to provide support to all our active members.
