## **Trustees Annual report: 1st October 2022 – 30th Sep 2023**

## **Enterprise Sailing (Charity no 1167252)** – A Charitable Incorporated

## Organisation

## **Purposes of the Charity:**

1 provide grants to schools and youth groups to allow under-privileged children to learn to sail dinghies within Birmingham and to then progress to off shore yachting adventures in the future;

2 a pathway to employment as sailing coaches in the future;

3 uses sailing as a means of bringing young people together from different communities within Birmingham to aid community cohesion. Through the medium of sail training, it aims to introduce young people from different backgrounds, who are sometimes schooled within mono cultures, to the great diversity that the region (and the country) has to offer. By removing young people from their immediate environment and placing them in a physically challenging environment where people from all backgrounds are equally bewildered, Sail Training provides a context where lasting friendships across communities are forged, where cross cultural understanding is encouraged and where the fear of the "other" is broken down. Some of the participants will become life long sailors - a pastime which involves a commitment to the discipline and joy of life long learning. The charity aims to give all participants an experience that will help them develop into adults who are more empathetic, more tolerant of difference, more emotionally intelligent and less susceptible to radicalisation (in all its forms) than they might otherwise be.

## **Summary of Activities & Achievements for this reporting period** :

Whilst last year saw the return to activities after the pandemic this reporting year has to reflect that recovery is a tougher, slower journey than we would have hoped. Our second post-pandemic summer Norfolk Cruise reflected the challenges schools are facing with families and staff being less enthusiastic about buying into extras. Finding staff and children who would commit to the venture was harder than before the pandemic, even though it is more important than ever for social and emotional health / development of young teenagers.

## **Norfolk Broads Sailing ‘23**

Our August expedition week served Birmingham schools: Ark Kings, Ninestiles, Hall Green and Christ Church Academy. The diverse group of young people created a rich mix who learnt much from each other and gained a huge amount from the experience of sailing and exposure to a very new environment, full of challenge and beauty. Christ Church Academy is a new free school recently opened in a challenging outer white area of the city and it was particularly good to help this school begin to develop a culture of residential and adventurous learning.

Again the cruise used the Hunters Heritage Fleet, with another fantastic group of volunteers, providing experienced skippers on each yacht. Helped by good weather and structured time

ashore many young people grew in confidence. It was again joyous to provide a positive beach experience for young people who have never experienced such exposure to beauty and wildlife.

The cruise has to cater for young people ever more expectant of personal accommodation of their own needs and preferences. At the end of the week it is hard to know how much “good” sticks, so it has been particularly encouraging to receive reports and to meet children and parents subsequently who have testified to the pasting benefit of the cruise week.

The Trustees have carried out their duties during this period with full regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance regarding public benefit. This year we welcomed Gillian Cloke, an accountant, to helpfully take up the duties of treasurer.
