MARTIN REEVES, TRUSTEE AND CO-CHAIR

I was pleased to continue as Co Chair and Trustee for another year. Unfortunately a rather difficult year for us with relocation of the office and other issues to deal with, but we did wonderfully well in the end with our September Pride month and other events throughout the year, including our LGBTtea afternoons at Morton Manor. Pride is not just for one day a year, and if we can attract a diversity of people to these events it makes it all really so well worth it.

A huge thank you as ever to all our Committee Members and Trustees, also allies, but must mention Karyn and Jane-Ann who as ever worked tirelessly to put everything together and work at so many events through the year, including to other Pride and well being events, also to schools, taking information and our vast array of wonderful merchandise!

We decided to do different events this year, including at Richard Rose Academy with a family event with many of our regular community and wellbeing stall holders attending plus entertainment, then at Box Arena Bar on the 20[th] September for an afternoon event then a more adult evening one. These were all well attended which with the inclement weather was so good to be at indoor venues! Box Arena was an ideal venue with stage, space for acts to change, good bar area to! Big thanks to them for hosting and all their help with sound, lighting etc, to security and to all our fantastic singers and host acts. I felt it was such a good vibe for everyone who came along and enjoying Pride in it’s true sense.

I hope we can attract new Committee members in particular younger ones to take Cumbria Pride forward, hopefully with enough funding to continue our voice for all the LGBT+ communities. I will continue on though in my current roles.

KARYN WOOD, TRUSTEE, CO-CHAIR AND TREASURER

I can hardly believe another year of Cumbria Pride has passed – and what a year it has been! I was honoured to be voted Co-Chair for this year, but nothing could have prepared me for the rollercoaster we’ve experienced. Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved together!

This year brought some unexpected challenges, not least finding a new office. Thankfully, our new space is absolutely perfect! An ideal location, plenty of storage, inclusive access with a lift, close to town and the Cathedral, and with a stunning view of the Castle. On a personal note, needing surgery during Pride month was definitely not part of the plan … I’m so grateful to my family and friends for stepping up to help support not just me, but also Cumbria Pride.

Although I sadly missed attending local Prides this year, I was definitely kept busy throughout the year attending a variety of other events, including Minicon, Megacon, Carlisle Racecourse, Upperby Gala, Reach Out, to name just a few.

One of our main goals this year was to expand our work beyond the annual Pride event – and we’ve definitely achieved that.

With one large outdoor Pride event not possible this year, we embraced a new approach – transforming September into Cumbria Pride Month with a series of smaller, more manageable, activities and events. We drew on feedback from previous years, introducing a Family and Community Day (with no alcohol), LGBT+ awareness sessions, a family-friendly Big Pride Party, and a fabulous After Party for adults. Plus so much more packed into the month. While we missed the single big outdoor event, the new programme was a huge success – so much so that many have asked us to do it again. We’ll definitely explore that, though perhaps spread the activities out a little more next time (a whole month of Pride left us rather sleepy by the 30th!).

Of course, changing direction also meant changes to sponsorship. While we sadly lost some supporters, we were delighted to welcome new support this year – Cyclife, Inspira and Skool. We’re hugely grateful to them, and to all our continuing sponsors and supporters: Atom Packs, Cumberland Council, KITTchEN, the Rainbow Lottery, and the University of Cumbria. Special thanks also go to BrewDog for hosting our Pride Month quiz, Box Arena for our Big Pride parties, Richard Rose Central Academy for our Family and Community Day, and Morton Manor for being home to our LGBTeas.

So, a huge well done to everyone in the team! Here’s to another incredible year ahead – onwards and upwards!

JANE-ANN CLARK, TRUSTEE AND FINANCE AUTHORISER

This year has been full of challenges, yet despite our small team we’ve done it and what a year we’ve had!

The connect with prides have been really good, nice going to new areas and especially speaking with youngsters and adults who have come along to support, find out information etc and best of all a safe non judgmental space for like minded people to come together, listen to music/acts, speakers and general chats with lots of fun activities all thanks to the funding from Children in need (very much appreciated).

Make with prides have been very successful again this year and it’s lovely seeing many of the same families coming along to these with their young ones who have an LGBT+ family member or others who are already noticing differences between them and others and they have a safe space to explore, ask questions and be supported by us being able to do these thanks to funding from the National Lottery.

We have started at the Cathedral farmers monthly market this year and they have been really good and a lot of people just pop by to see what new things we’ve got going on or to pick up some merchandise or to ask if we can make something specific to them.

We have once again attended Workington Christmas light switch and their mental health day in the park. It’s such a mixture of people we meet at these events and they always seem to remember us and have lots of good conversations as well as us meeting new organisations including shared lives this year who in return attended there 1st Cumbria pride and had a fabulous time.

We have also brought back our LGBTeas and have these at Morton Manor. These consist of food, entertainment and of course the most amazing raffle. We have all ages attending these and get a lot of positive feedback back from hosting these.

For Pride this year with lots of different things going on we decided to do things differently. We’re always getting asked about having an alcohol free event so we did a community and family day at Richard Rose central academy on the 13th September. This had many stalls, activities and live entertainment and it was brilliant, lots of amazing conversations were had at this including the fact that people would like more of these especially for neurodiverse these were much needed, and loved the chill and the way it was organised.

Although we had a few wee complaints which were mostly not having food and hot drinks as we only had cold drinks and snacks, but moving forward we have already looked into doing that and it’s doable, we’re also going to be bringing this to Workington which is very exciting.

We had the more traditional events at Box arena this year with a family friendly event 1[st] , then an over 18’s from 8pm on the 20th September, with lots of acts and these had lots of people attending during both events. A lot of our day ones took children home and came back for the adults only one. We had so many conversations about acts, drag and the venue which most people seemed to really enjoy just a few who would’ve preferred the car park but agreed that the way the weather had been we were very lucky to be indoors this year. But as we’ve learnt over the years, we simply cannot please everybody.

We’ve had a few challenges this year with getting funding as everywhere is struggling but I would love to thank all of our amazing sponsors

Atom packs

Cumberland council

Cyclife

Inspira

Kittchen

Rainbow lottery

Skool

University of Cumbria

Without these amazing organisations we’d not be able to do all that we do, so thank you.

We have also attended school fayres, Upperby gala, schools in general, freshers week, had LGBT+ training with a few organisations and also during the month of September, and found enough time to possibly catch a wee bit of sleep.

We have had a really busy year since last year including moving offices and already we have quite a few events booked up until Christmas that we can attend and take our rainbow merchandise with

us.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say Karyn you have done amazing, please take a bow and a massive but gentle pat on your back!!

PETER HARRISON, TRUSTEE

As we close the book on another year of Cumbria Pride, it’s hard to reflect on how difficult it’s been not just for us, but other organisations across the country, especially Prides and LGBT+ groups. With there simply not being enough funding to go around. With this is in mind, it not only highlights how important the events and presence we’ve had is but also the achievements we’ve made this year.

Pride looked slightly different this year, with events being spread throughout the month. I think this has shown that Pride is more than just a party outside and can in fact adapt and change. Feedback has been amazing and I’m really proud of the events we did which catered to different people. It’s also been amazing to see the ever growing popularity of our LGBTeas which seem to really appeal to a broad range of age groups and especially older members of the community, again showing the versatility of Pride to be more than just one cookie cut thing. I hope we continue in this direction.

However, I regret to inform the team that I will this year be standing down from the team of trustees. Due to both personal and family health reasons, I’m not able to guarantee I can give 100% to my trustee role, something I would only be a trustee if I could. I would like to thank the current trustees for all their support and friendship during my two years as part of the trustees.

I would like to take this moment to say that this isn’t a resignation from Cumbria Pride and just taking a step back from one role. I aim to remain an active volunteer and very much still part of team Cumbria Pride. The work we do and the impact we make means too much to me to walk away and it looks like I’ll very much be here until Pride is no longer needed.

As we close on 2025 my hope is that 2026 is a much bigger year for Cumbria Pride and we can build on everything we’ve created this year.

Peter Harrison

Responsibilities and basis of report

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

My examination of the charity’s accounts is carried out in accordance with section 145 of the Act. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
