Objectives and Activities Summary of objects: The advancement of education of the public by the encouragement of the arts with particular reference to steel pan music, by particularly but not exclusively: the teaching, practice, promotion and presentation of concerts and other activities of a charitable nature which will promote this art. Summary of activities" Northem Steel Network (NSN) was formed as an independent charity on 1st March, 2016, to take on the work of the Steelbands North project of North Tyneside Steelband, with trustees drawn from several steel bands in the region. The chartty became registered wrth the Charity Commission on 17th May, 2016. NSN does not have a pennanent base. and operates in the North of England, mainly in North Tyneside, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Northumberland.
NORTHERN STEEL NETWORK (Charity No 1167154) TRUSTEES, ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31st DECEMBER. 2024 Objectives and Activities (continued) Summary of activities (continued): Northem Steel Network (NSN) organises regional steel pan activities.. Northem Steel Orchestra. an annual Festival of Steelbands, steel pan workshops. c(Fordination..of steel pan tuning visits and the provision of networking and information. NSN also owns and maintains three sets of instruments for use by schools and education authorities throughout the North of England. The flagship activity is Northem Steel Orchestra (NSO), which gives talented young steel pan musicians across the Northem region the opportunity to play at an advanced level and have wider performan opportunities, particularly at a national level. NSN promotes its activities via its website, WWN.northemsteelnetwork.org. and via its fabook pages, Northem Steel Network and Northem Steel Orchestra. Trustees have considered the guidance issued by the Charity Commission with regard to public benefit, including the guidan on fee charging. The charity relies.on a mixture of subscriptions, donations, grants, workshop fees and cost recharges to support its activities. The subscription for players in the orchestra (£30 per annum) covers a very small proportion of the orchestra's costs, and trustees consider that this level of subscription is appropriate and does not discourage potential players. Small charges are also made to attend steel pan workshops. Achievements and Perfonnance NSN'S regular activities came to a hatt in March 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Restrictions by venues were eased only in September 2022 and NSN resumed its work with the region's steel pan musicians in 2023. In March 2024, NSN organised a visit to the region by a pan tuner. Unfortunately. because of difficulties matching the availability of national tutors with available weekends locally, and then illness, NSN was unable to organise any workshop weekends during the year. NSN'S outreach instruments remained in use in schools throughout 2024. NSN still has ambitious plans to expand rts activities. with an extended Festival of Steelbands and an intention for a re-formed NSO to play at Junior Panorama again. Fortunately, NSN'S key funders have agreed to support postponed activities, and NSN is looking forward to putting its plans into practice with a full programme of events. Disappointingly, no individuals participated in NSN activities during the year, although the outreach instruments were used by a total of 145 players in schools and community groups. NSN is a member of Making Music and the British Association of Steelbands, has links with North Tyneside VODA and works closely Vth local steel bands in the North-East.
