Governing Document

The School is governed by its Charitable Constitution.

Vision

Northern Prophetic School of Supernatural Ministry (known by its former name until 6 Oct 2020) was founded to contribute to the vision of the region of Teesside being transformed by the life, love and power of Jesus Christ. It does this by training adult students to live in a greater awareness of the Kingdom of God and to see its borders extended through a normal, Biblical, supernatural lifestyle.

Meeting for thirty-three Thursday evenings a year, the School emphasises hands-on training and experience along with academic understanding. This creates a ‘learn and apply’ culture in which students are encouraged to take risks, become used to having their faith stretched and grow in their understanding of God’s ways. To this end, as the students grow in confidence they are given opportunities to move out of the ‘safety’ of the classroom and to take part in weekend outreaches on the streets of Stockton-on-Tees and elsewhere. In these sessions students primarily seek out unchurched people and bring the Biblical gifts of the Holy Spirit to bear on their understanding of God’s love and their own destiny.

Management

The Board of Governors, chaired by Andrew Waugh, meet quarterly or more often as required, to review the progress of the School and agree on future actions to ensure its continued success and ethical conduct. A 2nd-year student, selected by the student body, is invited to attend Board meetings as a non-voting student representative. Week-on-week leadership and management continues in the hands of Julia Powell, who has been employed as the Director of the School since May 2018. Operation of the School is facilitated by a number of volunteers who lead small groups, lead worship and take on other practical tasks. The School principally uses teaching materials developed by Bethel Church of Redding, California, USA and also invites input from visiting speakers.

There is an ongoing declaration of interest, namely that one of the Trustees is the husband of the School's paid Director.

External Relationships

The School relates to a wide range of Christian churches in the NorthEast of England, whose leaders endorse students’ applications for the course.

About NPSSM

Opened in 2016, NPSSM is a ministry school where adults of all ages come to learn how to live in a greater awareness of the Kingdom of God and to see its borders extended through a normal, Biblical, supernatural lifestyle.

Main activities during the year

Running part-time training courses which encourage and help people in churches, on the street, and in their daily lives.

Achievements and Challenges

The School had 8 First Year students, all of whom graduated. Of the 8 Second Year students, one continued halfway through the course but then due to circumstances postponed until 2021-2022. The remaining 7 all graduated, of whom 3 were invited to stay on as interns.

As noted below, we started the year online having made the transition to being online in 2019-20.

We lost a key volunteer leader at the end of the previous session, though she remains a school supporter and occasionally helps with the NPSSM website. We therefore assigned team members to various roles within the school to help maintain consistency in the Revival Groups (small subgroups within the School).

School Director Julia Powell identified areas where, with assistance, we can develop and increase the publicity of the school, in the hope of seeing more students attending.

We had UK-based guest speakers throughout the school year, each bringing teaching complementary to the Bethel Curriculum. One of these speakers agreed to join our Blue Sky Thinking Board.

Public Outreaches in Durham and Middlesbrough were adapted to accommodate the Covid restrictions and the students responded well. Other creative ideas were used to help students continue to hone their spiritual gifts.

overall with much spiritual growth which was evident in the way (the students) led themselves, turned their hand to leading online activities or in-person activities.”

A small questionnaire was carried out with all students, who all placed themselves in the top three scores (out of ten) for ‘personal growth’ and in the in the top four for satisfaction with the year at NPSSM. Further, an online tool was used to encourage the students to understand their abilities to work in teams and to complement each other’s strengths. It was encouraging to see that the full spectrum of abilities was represented in the Second Years, interns and leaders, which allowed us to generate fruitful outreach opportunities. It was emphasised that we can succeed as a team if we work together to use God’s gifts to complement each others’ strengths.

Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic

Government restrictions on meetings and travel took effect three months before this report period. As is well known, the restrictions were sometimes eased, sometimes tightened. At no point during the report period were they eased to the point where adult education could revert to face-to-face teaching meetings. Therefore the School continued online throughout with reduced student fees. The earlier plans to use online small groups (in order to minimise the sense of loss of personal contact and learning support) were carried on and improved. Google Classrooms was successfully adopted as on online platform for the setting and marking of written assignments. Once the Revival Groups got the hang of the technical side of online meetings, the students each grew tremendously. Trustee Meetings were likewise conducted online. The sole exception was the student Induction process at the start of the school year, which was socially-distanced with appropriate PPE and a Risk Assessment. We continued to be grateful to Rivers Of Life Church in Stockton-on-Tees for their flexible ‘come back when you can’ attitude to our booking of their rooms.

The lack of meeting in person for social occasions proved to be a serious drawback. The School relies very much on the development of personal connections. Our most effective form of promotion is our students. Interacting and influencing peers about the NPSSM inspires new friends to apply and join; the School’s future suffered through the lack of this informal interaction. However, the year was full of positive points overall. The team and students navigated the adjustments with eagerness and professionalism, overcoming the obvious hurdles that could have prevented them from getting the most out of the teaching and training on offer.

Change of Charity Name

The re-naming process began before the time-frame of this report, ending with the Charity Commission’s approval of the new name in October 2020. Steps were then taken immediately to rename the School’s accounts at the bank and HMRC; processes which ended after this report period. Covid restrictions meant that re-branding necessitated online work (website and social media) but no printing expense.

Financing

As a Charity the School is able to accept donations which may be Gift-Aided. Student fees are payable in full at the beginning of the academic year or by the end of the first term. A discount structure is offered for early booking and for household members taking the course together.
