Focus on Quality Education for All.
In the past years, the Education For Madagascar Charity’s focus has been the three columns of our vision: Education, Health and Environment. After two years of uncertainty on the health front, because of the pandemic, where we provided a helping hand to hundreds of families in distress in Antananarivo and southern Madagascar, we were finally able, during 2022, to get back to the wider social objective as described in our constitution, the governing document , namely:
To tackle poverty in Madagascar through long-term educational projects, to support children and young people in their education, to raise the awareness of sustainable development, to support their families, particularly mothers, and to help them realise their potential, from early childhood to adulthood, until they are able to be economically independent.
We have kept our promises to implement innovative projects and achieve tangible results. After six years of operations, it's clear that the children who started our programme at the earliest possible age have the best academic and linguistic result . Hence, we took the decision to create a full-time pre-school branch, with 1 the support of new sponsors, by setting up a Montessori school for 30 underprivileged children in the village of Ambohibe.
Children under our care come from the poorest families in our four villages. The development of new projects has brought new motivation for a better academic achievement to these families. The quality of the infrastructure provided is paramount, so is the quality of the services offered, hence the ongoing investment in teacher training and personal development. Unfortunately, there are still few remaining cases of early marriage on the social margin, but gender equality between girls and boys attending school is nevertheless respected.
A number of post-baccalaureate , funded by our organisation are reaching the 2 end of their university studies. They will be further supported until their first employment kick-started their career in line with their personal inspiration and, if possible, in harmony with the country's needs. The introduction of digital technology into the classroom for children over 9 years of age is on the agenda, to guarantee rich content with the support and supervision of a qualified teacher.
Last but not least, we encourage accompanied self-learning. According to Maria Montessori: "Education is not what the teacher gives, education is a natural process carried out spontaneously by the human individual... through his experiences of the environment". As a result, the "prepared environment"3 plays a key role.

Health education: To prevent rather than to cure.
Our approach with preventive healthcare aims to reduce and avoid the onset, development or deterioration of disease, by acting on :
-
Behaviours (smoking prevention, sex education, prevention of domestic violence, alcohol and drug addiction, etc.),
-
The environment ( air and water quality preservation, etc.).
We have set up a medical center whose main role is to provide early detection of possible chronic illnesses so that patients can be better cared for in local hospitals or basic health center: diabetes screening, blood pressure measurement, family planning program, monitoring of child health and pregnant women.
According to a Malagasy proverb, "When the stomach is empty, the mind goes wandering". It's also said that a hungry stomach has no ears. This saying is even more relevant in Madagascar, where poverty and lack of food are major causes of lawbreaking. Half of our healthcare expenditure is spent on nutrition, which not only plays an important role in growth, but also affects a child's emotional and physical development, beyond simply increasing weight and height. Many families cannot afford three hot meals a day. Double-digit inflation in Madagascar obviously has an immediate impact on household management when it comes to supplying quality food. We do not directly assist families with these economic problems. However, support for children's education, health prevention and a long-term vision of their future are all part of the fight against poverty that we are putting in place.
We have set up a "sports" slot in the agenda of the educators in Ambohibe Antananarivo. Sport is available to everyone and enables young people, whether underprivileged or not, to develop their physical and interpersonal skills. Sport promotes communication, self-confidence, motivation and well-being.
Our football branch VYB in Fianarantsoa can accommodate 162 children and young people. The club also helps to integrate young people into society.
In the absence of a regularly available local practitioner, the medical center built in Morondava in 2020-2021 will officially become a library, again with a focus on Education.

Environmental education : Cutting pollution and carbon footprint
Economic development requires a well-developed infrastructure, in particular an effective sanitation system.
Given the demographic boom, the introduction of dry toilets is the most environmentally-friendly solution for saving and reusing "drinking" water, keeping Madagascar’s beaches clean and keeping our water tables free from latrine contamination.
Dry sanitation systems ("composting" or waterless toilets) have been in use since the 1970s. Their use has spread to rural areas of Europe and the USA. The advantages of dry sanitation systems include water conservation, low energy consumption and the creation of a value-added fertiliser product.4
In addition, the use of such a system is a sustainable sanitation approach that can reduce the burden on infrastructure and provide sanitation to the 2.5 billion people worldwide who currently have no access to it, as in many remote villages in Madagascar.
The temperature-time criteria approach is the most commonly used method for assessing the stability and safety of compost as a fertiliser. The risks associated with handling waste after 12 months of composting have been calculated to be extremely low. From August 2021 to date, we now have 18 months' experience in the use of dry toilets by children and young people in Ambohibe Antananarivo, with the benefit of saving every drop of rain and using a very efficient natural fertiliser.
Environmental education, like involvement in reforestation and permaculture, is key to changing behaviour, to a better respect to the earth. They impart new concepts and give young people the ability to take action on climate change in the
In addition, by being made aware of environmental issues, such as the water scarcity, the air pollution… young people initiate a genuine dialogue within their families and society at large. We have a duty to pass on to our young people and to our children, from the earliest age, to encourage them to love the planet earth and to build a long-term future for themselves.
4 Details in Section 3.3 of potential savings as observed.

B. EXPENDITURE
I. Education Department
In our opinion, investment in education is the first, if not the only sustainable solution to Madagascar's chronic development problem.
Firstly, by training the teachers, then by building quality infrastructures, and finally by implementing programs adapted to the country.
We spent 18,604 GBP on Education in 2022, representing 50% of our overall budget. The SCOLA project, which provides subsidies for 10 post-baccalaureate students, used 14% of this global allocation. The installation of the Akka Montessori classroom came in second place. Expenditure on the Orphée multimedia classroom came third. Our sponsor Canal Plus was in charge of decorating and providing furniture. Career Day came fourth.

- 1.1. TUTO Project Learning Support
In 2022, we spent 1,765 GBP mainly on weekly teacher allowances. This represents 9% of the education budget.
1.2. VIM Project Linguistic and Cultural Exchange
Traditionally, European volunteers visit Madagascar during the summer holidays, we received two volunteering students from France during July 2022.
We spent 1,023 GBP here. This amount includes foods and accommodation offered to all the children benefiting from our summer programme every day, during the school holidays,
1.3. ORPHEE - Media Library Project
2,903 GBP mainly spent to turn the basement of the main building into an media classroom, with an office carpet floor and technical installations: electricity and internet connection. Part of the costs, in particular the furniture and wall decoration, have been covered by Canal Plus. The TV set and Canal Satellite subscription are provided free of charge by them and are not included in these costs.
We have set up a dedicated, spacious, furnished classroom equipped with a TV screen and a selection of quality content. The Canal Plus educational project includes a wide range of teaching material: Nathan Plus, National Geographic, BBC International, etc., which will stimulate language learning and enhance the general culture of our pupils and educators.
This tool is an essential addition to the courses given by the teachers, whose added value and benevolence remain essential to offering a quality relationship with the learners.
This new classroom is open to our beneficiaries aged 12 and over and to members of the Ecole Des Femmes.

1.4. SCOLA Project : Sponsoring School fees
The fees, with a total about 5,325 GBP, represent 29% of the budget dedicated to Education. They are essential to provide the best possible training adapted to the development of our beneficiaries.
The tuition fees of post-baccalaureate students are fully covered by our organisation in exchange for the time5 these students/trainees devote to passing on knowledge to younger students. The latter thus become trainers who in turn commit to participating in Education For Madagascar projects.
In 2022, 10 students in higher education were involved, attending the following establishments:
-
SBM/ISCAM: Sustainability Business Management Institut Supérieur de Commerce, d'Administration et de Management
-
INTH: National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality
-
InSPNMad: Institut Supérieur Privées Novateurs de Madagascar
-
IESSI Institut d'Enseignement Supérieur de Soavinandriana Itasy
-
University of Antananarivo Ankatso
-
Antananarivo Medical School
-
ETP: English Teaching Program for all educators wishing to improve their English language skills.
In 2022, 4 high school students who have had an exceptional academic path despite their parents' economic difficulties will also be included.
- 1.5. CAD Project Career Awareness Day
We spent 1,957 GBP on this project in 2022.
This year's theme is : "Sustainable development explained to children".
The "Career Awareness Day" project is an annual event, a day of special discovery and exchange with celebrities working in a profession that the children benefiting from our programs dream of, or aspire to know better. For this 3rd edition, held in February 2022, the students from our Ambohibe site wanted to get to know a chef, a journalist, a policeman and a tourist guide.

To further nurture their ambitions and enable them to play a full part in the solution for Madagascar's sustainable development, it essential to introduce them to some future-oriented sectors such as permaculture, digital knowledge, hydrology and social entrepreneurship.
The climate disasters the country experienced in early 2022 have had devastating and long-term effects on Madagascar's economy, social structure and environment. They convinced us of the urgent need to train young people who are aware of these issues and committed to creating activities with a positive impact on the country.
We were delighted that the most prominent representatives of these professions were present and offered generously their time and expertise to inform, listen, advise, guide and, quite simply, inspire children aged 5 to 19.
This career day was made even more professional, thanks to our partnership with Sesame Madagascar, an excellent educational program for underprivileged students.
1.6. KANTO Projet : Music and visual arts
In 2020, we created a chess club, a book club, a cooking club, a choir and a music club in partnership with the Akamasoa music club.
In 2021, we have purchased 4 violins and two guitars to complement the instruments already on site and a piano, as well.
In 2022, a mini-orchestra is being set up.
The total amount spent is 705 GBP (or 4% of the Education budget).
1.7. CARE Project : Coding, Applications and Robotics Education
The Programming and Robotics project represents 7% of the Education budget. The amount spent in 2022 is 1340 GBP.
Learning programming is a long process that requires a lot of practice and passion.
Most of our pupils have made good progress and have completed the full Swift Playground™ cycle, which has enabled them to master the basic concepts of programming and a rich set of instructions. A dozen of students are now fully immersed in the Swift™ language, which allows them to experiment with their first

mobile application prototypes and gain a good understanding of the design, coding, debugging, compilation and publication cycle.
The main obstacle we face is the time students can spend in front of the computers, because obviously the progress they make depends essentially on this factor.
The other challenge is to give the students the motivation to look for opportunities, to learn to define a functional scope and to find the resources needed to carry it out. Madagascar's curriculum still leaves little room for individual initiative, creativity and the blending of art and technology, all of which are key to creating universally-appreciated applications.
1.8. AKKA Montessori School Madagascar
Actual amount of 3,586 GBP are spent in 2022. In January 2022, during International Education Day, we announced the creation of a structure under Swiss law that will focus on meeting Sustainable Development Goal 4: to provide Quality Education.
Akka Montessori School, which stands for Akanin'ny Kilonga, or the Children's House, involves setting up a Montessori structure at our site in Ambohibe Antananarivo for the underprivileged children we have been caring for until now.
The educators being trained in Madagascar in 2022 should qualify for AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) certified training in 2023.
The amount spent above was dedicated to the construction of furniture: shelves, tables and chairs of a suitable size for 3-6 year olds, as well as the purchase of the first part of Montessori educational materials.

2.1. TOMADY Health Center
We spent 1,123 GBP in 2022.
This was a donation to the Tomady health centre run by Dr Suzy Ratsimbazafy. The medical centre receives patients from disadvantaged families in the village of Ambohibe every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for consultations in general medicine, family planning, pre-natal consultations, diabetes and blood pressure screening, as well as maternal and child health.
2.2. FODY Project: Nutrition
We have allocated 3,431 GBP to the Fody project.
We spend an estimated of 200 GBP a month to feed 100 people once a week, children and adults, at the Ambohibe Antananarivo campus.
2.3. School For Women
We spent 764 GBP on the School For Women, which takes place once a month in Antananarivo or Anjozorobe, and once a year in Morondava.
Launched in 2019, this programme is having a real impact. It's based on a simple observation: the requirement to look after vulnerable mothers to get better results with the children. The monthly themes varie and organise around presentations

and discussions: personal development, sport, raising awareness of gender equality, emancipation of women and young girls, managing the family budget.
Last but not least, we work to raise awareness and fight against domestic violence. The best way to do this is to educate young girls, make them aware of their rights, give them access to knowledge, give them a chance to have their say and, better still, organise language and craft workshops to help them become economically independent.
We now have 241 women, including
65 registered in the village of Ambohibe Antananarivo
123 in the village of Andabatoara Morondava
53 in Anjozorobe.
2.4. Football Club Vasyboaikely Fianarantsoa
This includes the local wages and social security contributions of the Malagasy administrative managers, as well as a set of competition jerseys.
Expenses amount to 1,134 GBP from January to December 2022.
Football is a tool for integrating children on the fringes of society in the outskirts of the city. We hope to encourage the 162 boys and the girls of this village to take up a sport to excel and cultivate their personal development.

3.1. Permaculture
The ethics of soil care, people care and fair share form the foundation for permaculture design is also found in the community in general.
Permaculture is "a method of agriculture based on the principles of sustainable development, with the aim of respecting biodiversity and human beings and imitating the way natural ecosystems function". Permaculture is therefore a concept based on observing nature in order to reproduce its patterns and relationships. Thanks to permaculture, we can improve the quality of the land and soil to ensure the viability of food production on semi-arid land with no water.
We have been able to increase productivity and production despite drought, floods and cyclones. We still need to put in place appropriate productivity measures.
Expenditure on permaculture is estimated at 4,110 GBP in 2022, including : the full-time salaries and social charges of two permaculture workers in Ambohibe on a plot of 1000 m2 under cultivation and two agricultural workers in Anjozorobe on

3.2. SILVA Project: Tree Planting
En 2022, 530 trees were planted, for a total 1,750 GBP
Reforestation part I
For the past 6 years, Education For Madagascar has traditionally carried out reforestation on a local community site. In January 2022, the planting will take place in each neighbourhood where the young people and children taken care by our organisation are living, so that everyone can take full ownership of the results and to ensure regular monitoring. We have chosen to plant one tree per child, Factually it would be estimated 530 trees given number of children in 2022, including orchards, endemic plants and medicinal plants such as Ravintsara.
Reforestation part II
Education For Madagascar not only provides environmental education, but also reinforces it with practical application with organised field trips. The children of Public Primary school of Andabatoara Morondava and the young educators from Edu4Mada learned that :
Mangroves are part of the extraordinary ecosystem located at the edge of land and sea in tropical regions, which offer a considerable range of ecological community goods and services.
Mangrove ecosystems are highly effective carbon sinks, storing large quantities of carbon in their soil, leaves, branches, roots, etc. They also are a solid protection against floods and erosion.
“One hectare of mangroves can store 3,754 tonnes of carbon, equivalent to the carbon emissions of 2,650+ cars for one year.” 6
25 acres of mangroves planted, 4000 propagules (buds to be planted), in Nosimeloky, rural commune of Marofandila, District of Morondava, Menabe Region in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Fisheries and the Blue Economy, thanks to the technical support and leadership of WWF.

- 3.3. WASH Project Water Sanitation & Hygiene
Change management on sanitation issues is still slow in Madagascar, and ongoing awareness-raising effort is much needed. We have two years experience in the use of dry toilets by children and young people living on campus in Ambohibe Antananarivo. With five toilets installed, the experience has been very positive.
We use the third example of our "Green Box" installed near the residential accommodation for our teachers. The amount invested for this project in 2022 is approximately 775 GBP. We estimate that it will be highly profitable in terms of water and fertiliser savings.
We have benefited from the successful experience of the Tsaratanana ecovillage (Association Yocontigo Espérance), which is equipped exclusively with dry toilets, with even more cost-effective models to be manufactured and installed in the event of a possible extension.

Acknowledgement
Caring for others means caring for yourself
Positive psychology is a scientific approach based on everything that enables a person to thrive, move forward, overcome difficulties and always move towards inner peace.
Despite the shocks that affect each of us to different degrees, this inner strength enables us to think about improving our well-being by focusing on the aspects that strengthen our mental and physic health. It considers the optimal functioning of the human being through several key features:
-
Positive emotions: happiness, well-being, satisfaction and optimism.
-
Positive personality traits such as gratitude, wisdom, courage and curiosity.
-
Positive societal values such as respect, civility and hard work.
The aim is to develop the capacity to love and to be loved. It helps us to find meaning in our actions, to feel responsible for what we can change and to show resilience in the face of what we cannot avoid.
"Grace and Courtesy" is the ethos that educators at Education For Madagascar pass on to our pupils every day. It is our signature.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to the Education For Madagascar team, who give their precious time to the most disadvantaged, and to our donors, without whom no humanitarian action could continue.
