There are no committees or sub-groups. 

## **Governance** 

The Trustees meet twice a year and can attend in person or via Zoom, with all actions formally minuted. Agendas are issued prior to the meetings and minutes are duly approved by the trustees at the following meeting. 

A copy of the approved minutes is sent to the Secretary of St Andrew’s Church Council. 

Meetings in 2023 took place on **12.6.23** & **23.10.23** 

Shane Barnes resigned as Church Treasurer in April 2023, but remained a trustee. 

Grahame Ash took over as Church Treasurer and joined the Trustees.

Amanda Warrender resigned as a trustee. 

New trustees are recruited by invitation of the existing trustees from within the body of St Andrew’s Church. They are known to the existing trustees and are usually recruited on the basis of a particular skill or experience they have to offer. 

## **3. Objectives and Activities** 

The mission of the Charity is : 

_**To promote the ministry and work of St. Andrew’s Church, Kyrenia by raising, holding and dispersing funds to build the mission and work of St. Andrew’s Church, Kyrenia within the Anglican Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf in the Episcopal Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East.**_ 

## **Activities and Achievements in 2023** 

- Regular Sunday worship (Service of Holy Communion) 

- Additional special services in Advent, at Christmas, in Lent and at Easter, including a joint Advent Service with the Noregian Church Abroad. 

- Additional special services as required (Bishop’s Retirement, Installation of new Priest, Baptisms, Memorial Services, etc) 

- Social and cultural events taking place in the church and church hall, including  ‘Music Week’ in October. 

- Regular fellowship in the church hall after Sunday services and at social events. 

- Advent Bible Study group, meeting at The Hermitage 

- Fundraising and support for charities (e.g. Red Crescent Appeal for Turkish Earthquake, Harvest Festival donations for Tulips Charity for cancer sufferers in N Cyprus, Poppy Appeal, etc) 

- Use of church premises by other Christian groups for worship, including a Francophone African Church and a Russian Evangelical Church. 

- Restoration, refurbishment, decoration and furnishing of ‘The Hermitage’ (aided by a grant from the *Jerusalem and the East Mission Trust - see below for details), to provide a home for the new priest and a resource for the church community. 

- Recruitment, appointment and installtion (June 2023) of a new priest on a ‘House for Duty’ basis, with a 3 year contract. Revd Alec Mitchell is a retired priest, formerly in the Diocese of Manchester. 

- Provision of expenses for the priest 

## **Public Benefit** 

- St Andrew’s is the only Anglican Church in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with an ordained priest and thus provides ministry for a large geographical area of the island. 

- Services are attended by worshippers from many parts of the world, who live, work in or visit the Kyrenia area: UK, Ireland, Germany, Norway, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Nigeria, DRC, Phillipines. 

- Worshippers come from a variety of Christian traditions, including Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and Orthodox. The church provides worship and also

fellowship and belonging for people a long way from home - particularly students and migrant workers. 

- Centrally located, the church provides a hub and focus for Christians in and around Kyrenia. 

- St Andrew’s publicises regular and special events through its website and Facebook page. Facebook posts are shared to other local groups, to extend our reach to others in N Cyprus. 

- All members of the community are invited to worship with us and use are facilities. Services and events are publicly advertised. 

## **4. Financial Review** 

_The Charity Accounts for the year ending 31st December 2023 are attached (independently examined by Keith Bristow FCA)_ 

- **INCOME for 2023 was £29,742 and EXPENDITURE was £36,013** 

## **Income** 

- As of September 2023, regular monthly giving was £662 (compared with £540 at the end of 2022) 

- As of December 2023 there were 14 regular donors (compared with 15 in 2022) 

- Regular standing order gift-aided donations totalled £8,062 

- Gift Aid envelope donations totalled £1,004 

- We received two one-off donations to support Music Week 

- HMRC paid £2,201 Gift Aid to the charity on donations 

- The charity was a convenient way to receive the JEMT* grant of £14,504 to assist with restoration of The Hermitage 

## **Expenditure** 

_All payments made by the Charity were at the request of the Church Council and in accordance with the Charity purposes and governing document, where the UK Charity account was considered the most convenient means of delivering these payments._ 

- Synod costs for our representative were £600 

- During the year £35,000 was transferred to the Church Cyprus account for Hermitage restoration 

- Bank charges were £78

- Annual income has grown since Covid, but not reached pre-Covid levels. The balance that has built up is due partly to decreased expenditure during Covid and the period when there was no paid priest, together with some specific one-off donations. 

- St Andrew’s UK Charity makes regular stewardship straightforward. 

- Regular donations can be made by standing order by anyone with a UK bank account. 

- Those who pay UK tax can also Gift Aid their donations. 

- Gift Aid applications were made in 2023, where appropriate, at the designated times 

- The Trustees continue to work to make church members aware of the importance of stewardship. 

- The Trustees have discussed transferring some of the funds held in this account into a higher interest account 

- We do not currently hold reserves or investments 

## **5. Plans for Future Periods** 

## **Our objectives, as outined in our mission statement (above) remain unchanged. Our plans for the future include the continuation and development of:** 

- Regular Sunday worship (Service of Holy Communion) 

- Special services in Advent, at Christmas, in Lent and at Easter, including joint services with other Christian Groups 

- Special services for families/individuals as required (Baptisms, Memorial Services, etc) 

- Continued upkeep and improvement of  ‘The Hermitage’, providing a home for our priest - and a resource for the church community. 

- Bible Study groups meeting through the year at The Hermitage 

- Social and cultural events taking place in the church and church hall, including our ‘Music Week’ in October 2024, to follow the success in 2023 and earlier years. 

- Regular fellowship in the church hall after Sunday services and at social events. 

- Fundraising and support for charities 

- Use of church premises by other Christian groups for worship. 

## **6. Policies** 

St Andrew’s Church Kyrenia UK Charity is a small organisation, which serves to promote the ministry and work of St. Andrew’s Church, Kyrenia. 

The policies of St. Andrew’s Church and of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf apply to St. Andrew’s Church Kyrenia UK Charity 

The charity has no employees and organises no activities (aside from its own meetings) independently of St. Andrew’s Church. 

## **7. Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities**

It is the responsibility of St Andrew’s Church Kyrenia UK Charity Trustees to act at all times in accordance with the Constitution of St Andrew’s Church Kyrenia UK Charity, dated 11th May 2016. 

Trustees must ensure that payments made by the Charity are at the request of St Andrew’s Church Council and in accordance with the Charity purposes and governing document, where the UK Charity account is considered the most convenient means

_The Jerusalem and the East Mission was established in the 19[th] Century, as a fund for the maintenance and development of the diocese._

_On July 1st, 2015 JMECA became a Limited Company Charity with, a new charity number (11584760) and a Company Number (09067852)_ 

_The charity supports the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East and the Province of Alexandria._ 

_**The Jerusalem and the East Mission Trust Limited** is a Trust Corporation established in 1929 to act as a trustee for charitable bodies. JEMT is not itself a charity, but a non-profit limited company that administers the assets of JMECA and a number of other charities that provide support for the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East._
